Error when downloading SL Viewer

Trying to download SL Viewer and I receive this message: "win_crash_logger.exe has stopped working". My system is compatible.

That's not a message from your SL viewer.  That's from your computer.  In fact -- I'm having a hard time finding information here from Google, so I'm hoping that Peggy will come along with better information --- win_crash_logger.exe looks like a virus.  If that's the case, be sure to run your antivirus software now, before you do anything else.

win_crash_logger.exe is a LInden Lab file that resides in your Second Life x86 folder once you have installed the application. Why you would get a message about it while downloading SL and before you install is beyond me.

Thanks, Nyll. I looked all over for that sucker last night and couldn't find it anywhere. That's when I started suspecting that it was an extra that the OP had picked up somewhere and was corrupting her system. I'm glad that's not the case, but I still don't have a clue why it's keeping her from installing.

Aha..I see you joined in February 2011 so you already have Second Life installed. This is not your first time to download the application so presumably you are downloading a newer version or using the update. Updates often cause issues.

Uninstall normally then manually remove the hidden Second Life folders in AppData.

Enable Hidden Files & Folders:

1) Open Control Panel
2) Open “Folder Options”
3) Open the “View” tab
4) Check “Show hidden files, folders, and drives”

Press OK and close control panel.

Accessing AppData:

Browse to the path below that corresponds to your operating system:

Windows XP - C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\

Windows Vista - C:\Users\<username>\AppData\

Windows Vista Home Premium - C:\Users\<username>\AppData\

Windows 7 - C:\Users\<username>\AppData\ 

Inside the AppData folder:

1) Open the Local folder and delete the entire Second Life folder.

2) Go back one level to the AppData folder.

3) Open the Roaming folder and delete the entire Second Life folder. If you wish to save existing chat files you've had with other avatars, move the Roaming > [avatar name] folder elsewhere on your computer and drag any chat text files you wish to retain into the new Roaming > [avatar name] folder once Second Life is reinstalled and you've logged in at least once. Ignore if you don't want to save any.

4) Restart your computer.

Now download a fresh copy of Second Life and install it.

EDIT: I usually advise people to open Preferences > Setup tab and change 'Software updates' drop down menu to 'Download and install updates manually', as the automatic update process has caused problems for some. Unless you are experiencing problems a simple uninstall from the Start Menu > All Programs > Second Life should suffice before downloading and installing future viewer releases.

Hi Rolig. Yeah, unusual issue. Turns out she joined in Feb 2011 so already has SL installed and this is a new version or an update. Something similar here but didn't hear if this fixed the issue or not. http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Technical/changeover-from-32-bit-to-64-bit/qaq-p/1056351
