I think Liden Lab should give us the ability to hide our Username.

This way if we wiish to change our name and only have one name showing, we do not need to create an enitrely new account. All you and those around you, will be able to see is your Display Name. (Which you can change once a week.)

Should be able to hide your name on your profile, and from above your avatar, this way it doesn't look stupid for an avatar to have 2 names above it.

Sorry I disagree.

  • You need to be able to use the username for AR'ing, ejecting and banning people not the display name.
  • I can't understand a lot of display names either because of overuse of ASCII characters, and need to use their user name as a result.
  • People change display names all the time.  How would you recognize people that do this especially if they also change their appearance?

I will always call people by their display name if I can read it.  But I must be able to see usernames too.  It is not your place to decide what I see on a tag.  I can turn tags on or off and choose what name to use for the display.  I choose to see both display and user names.  I also choose to see my contact lists by username first with the display name beside it.

I never said anything about it beng "MY PLACE" to do anything!

I simply stated an idea that I have, I'm allowed to have an idea, so thanks! You're free to disagree however you wish.

If this idea is not something that could be done, then the ability to change our username entirely should be allowed. Grant it that it should be something you have to pay to do. This way it solves "for the most part" the problem of dealing with griefers or trolls.

The idea is to restrict how other people see names.  You want to take away the choices people have now of seeing only the username, only the display name or both and replace it with just one thing - only seeing the display name.  You are allowed to have ideas but ideas restricting people's choices to what your personal preference is, is out of place IMO.

should

This is the word I'm having trouble with, in your posts.

If LL could do this*, does that mean that they should do this? No, that doesn't automatically follow. There are bigger issues, from group permissions to impersonation of merchants, to protection of the Linden name/brand and consistancy/user expectations.

The word should often implies an imperative to act, where there is none in this case. It's a difficult word to use online, as tone can't be heard and intent can be read into it.

(* my understanding is that they can - as in, are capable of doing so - change usernames, but it's labour-intensive and requires high skill supervision, making it non-workable even at cost. I know of only two high-profile cases of this happening, and neither were simply 'the user wishes to change their name' -it was a part of administrative action.)

User Name is linked to your account, and more importantly, your key, which is what computers use since it's a number, and therefore used in everything from communications, chat, groups, physics, inventory and everything else. That's what Display Name was for. It would cause huge problems to the systems to allow it, and hiding it would stop banning, and in fact be a griefer's, spammer's and harasser's paradise.

I sympathise if you are being spammed and trolled (I am still getting problems more than 6 years later from an idiot) but you need to Abuse Report them, and block them and their objects. If they are sufficiently wilful, then they can ban by IP, and you may well be able to take legal action against them, depending on your jurisdiction.

In the UK, and much of Europe, there are firm laws leading to jailing for harassment and interfering with computers (which it can be counted as), whether by software, updates social networks or others. Revenge porn is now a criminal offence in the UK, the first country to adopt that. Sadly the US is well behind in protection against harassment and lies.
