I'm not sure if it's just me or if others are having this problem, but I've only started having this problem just tonight.

I signed up for SL and downloaded the SL Viewer on the 9th, and everything was going just fine then; I was logged in for about an hour, customizing my avatar with freebies and whatnot.

Just tonight, I signed into SL and attempted to do some stuff when suddenly, everything froze. The viewer stopped responding, and every time I tried to close out of it, nothing happened. I couldn't even open my Task Manager, and every other program on my computer stopped responding and froze up. I had to do a hard shut-down to restart everything. I attempted to sign into SL again with the Task Manager opened, and it froze up not even five seconds after I logged in and everything was loaded. I tried ending the process, but to no avail; practically everything froze up and I had to do a hard shut-down once again. I tried twice more, but I ended up getting the same exact result.

TL;DR: The main SL Viewer keeps hosing my system, and I'm not quite sure why... it's kind of frustrating, having to restart my computer constantly whenever I open it. Not entirely sure if it's a bug in the browser, or if it has something to do with my graphics card since it's an in-build. :/

Computer Specs:

-Windows 7, 64-bit

-Intel Core i3-2370M CPU @ 2.40 GHz processor

-Intel HD Graphics 3000

Any help and advice will be appreciated greatly. Thanks. :D

One thing I might look into trying is using a Third-Party SL viewer. There's a list of them that you can pick here: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Third_Party_Viewer_Directory

I don't know if it'll work, though... I'm just now trying it out to see if it'll make a difference. It's about the only solution I can find to both of our problems for now. Hopefully it'll work. If not, then hopefully somebody else can help us out one way or another. :/

Hmm... :/

Yeah, I just downloaded and tried one of the Third-Party viewers. It seems to work alright... I can use one of them without crashing, but everything tends to load at a snail's pace and I can't hear anything. Well, hopefully somebody can help us with this soon. I'm using Radegast right now... and I think I'd definitely prefer to use the main Viewer instead of a Third-Party one. xD

Not sure if this helps anything... but have you downloaded and tried Firestorm 4.4.2? This Third-Party viewer seems to work fairly well for me. I haven't had any problems with it. And it seems easy to use as well. :P

Having just endured trying to use Second Life on an older computer, and seeing the difficulties logging in and staying on with even the newest viewers, I have to conclude that the entire conglomeration is a bloated joke.  Almost totally disabling all the enhanced graphics and features was no help at all.  At this point I would fear suggesting that any friend or family ever try to join SL and each of the viewers and perhaps the site should probably be flagged as potentially harmful software.  They have sacrificed general serviceability for useless toys to amuse themselves too many times in the last two years and the chickens are coming home to roost. During my hiatus I used one of the virtual worlds associated with a 10 year old gaming console and the mesh, scenery, performance were all vastly superior to what Second Life does on a PC five times more powerful.   This is a matter of bad design and poor management.  Five people in SL can bog things down to an aggravating ordeal while these other platforms function at high levels with crowds that would crash an SL sim in seconds.

At this point, some person with a high grade gaming PC or the latest graphics card will interject that he has no problems and will make some insensitive remark about how people need to buy new machines.  That is not going to get new users from the legions of happy people who own machines that are perfectly serviceable under normal circumstances.  The entire community needs to reconsider some of the choices they have made, perhaps delay the implementation of more problem sources until they fix the core functions and even rewind to a more tolerable level of play.  Morality enters the picture as well.   People may not even notice the damage these processes are doing to their machines until it is too late.  Second Life has become an attractive nuisance.

A flock of things...

When you ask a tech question include information about your computer and viewer. If the viewer will at least show the login screen, get the info from the viewer's Help-About... and paste that into your post with your question. Help->About... provides all the version numbers we need.  To add your info to an existing question use OPTIONS->EDIT. It’s in the upper right of your post.

Otherwise, on Windows click Start and type DXDIAG, case doesn’t matter. That will open the dxdiag in the panel. It will give you your system specs. We need to know video driver version, OpenGL version, …

If you suspect video problems troubleshoot that by entering Preferences BEFORE logging in. Set graphics to low. If the viewer works, then you have likely found the problem.

The HD 3000 is not really intended for this type of use. Microsoft has a problem getting OpenGL stuff to work. Also, HD graphics often share system ram with the video display. If you are short memory, that can add to your problems.

This is a big problem in Win 8. SL Viewer uses OpenGL. Go to the Intel site and get the latest driver. Do NOT use Microsoft's drivers if there is any other alternative. See this article: http://hqtips.com/pc/windows/how-to-fix-opengl-error-on-windows-8/ - I know you are Win 7 but the process of updating the driver is the same.

See the thread http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Technical/does-Intel-R-HD-Graphics-3000-work-with-second-life/qaq-p/1629925 for more info on the HD 3000.

You will need to have at least OpenGL 3.0 installed, which is part of your video driver install/update, not a separate install.

I'm having the same problem.  Shortly after login my entire system crashes as if the computer has been turned off, and I have to restart the computer again.  This problem is localized to SL, as it's not happening with any other programs.  I've scanned for viruses and spyware via McAfee, MalwarBytes, Super Anti-Spy, and Spybot.  It's a clean system.

The problem doesn't seem to be from one particular viewer.  I've tried v3, v3 BETA, and Firestorm 4.2.2 to no avail.
