I can't get on after it downloaded the update

It says error opening file for writing program files C://{x86}/SecondLifeViewer/win_crash_Logger.exe

I hit retry several times and it finally worked. Earlier it didn't work when I tried to download the update. What could have caused the write error?

Probably a damaged file, you might have no problems though, if the damage isn´t bad, but if you do, like crashing (that´s what the crash logger is for, to tell the viewer why you crashed in case you do) try a 'clean install' next time.

if you use a 3rd party viewer, they should be on that viewer´s website.

It´s best to always do clean installs when updates come in, to avoid problems, but follow the instructions precisely, so you won´t accidentally delete eventual cherished chatlogs, friendlists, settings or anything.

No one ever knows WHY?

Did you try restarting after the install? Various versions of the viewer crash and leave viewer tasks running. That complicates viewer installs. Often a restart is all that is needed.
