I haven't played SL in years, decided to download it last night on a computer that has never ran SL before. As soon as I launch, I get to the 'initializing vfs' then my monitor goes black and says 'unsupported mode' and I can't do anything but hold the power button until the computer turns off.
I've updated all my drivers, reinstalled the viewer, tried firestorm but get the same results.
I hear people saying clear cache manually from appdata, but I have never ran SL on this computer before and I am using windows 10 that doesn't have an 'appdata' folder.
I've also tried unplugging my USB headset no no avail.

Specs: windows 10
I5 6500
RX 480
8GB RAM

Thanks for reading, I've had such an urge to get back into this game, but can only find fixes for other windows versions. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

When you ask a question like this include your computer information and viewer information. Use the viewer’s HELP->ABOUT… to collect the info before or after login.

Since you aren’t getting to even ‘before’… its tough. So, we’ll try to get by with what we have.

If you are running the 32-bit Win 10 that is part of the problem. Presumably you are using the 64-bit version.

The hardware you have should run SL. Presumably you are using the Linden made default viewer. For troubleshooting get the Firestorm viewer, or other viewer you like. A list of them is here: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Third_Party_Viewer_Directory

See if another viewer will run. That tells us if it is the computer or the viewer. Singularity viewer requires the least hardware.

8GB of RAM is borderline. When I ran Firestorm with 8GB I had crashes, but it did start… and 8 should be enough…

However the RX 480 has some issues:
https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/BUG-20057
http://jira.phoenixviewer.com/browse/FIRE-16829

And..
https://community.secondlife.com/t5/General-Second-Life-Tech/Weird-artifacting-with-the-AMD-RX-480/m-p/3058450#M5044
http://blog.nalates.net/2016/08/13/nvidia-vs-amd-serious-problem/

The problems are the same on Linden and Firestorm viewers.

So, if your motherboard drivers and video driver are current they should not be a problem. Fixes others have tried can be found here: AMD OpenGL Problems 2016

Another set of fixes: Crash at VFS

Clearing Cache – Not a good idea. Lots of old timers still think you clear your cache to solve any problem. They aren’t keeping up. Cache clearing now aggravates most of the problems it is supposed to fix.

You can try unplugging all your USB devices… excluding mouse and keyboard…

Get CPUID Hardware Monitor (free) to check temperatures.

Open the SL log in C:\Users\[Win_login_ID]\AppData\Roaming\SecondLife\logs\

Start reading from the end toward the beginning looking for ERRORs to see what is crashing you.
