yes, if you had that feature then you must have been running a release candidate with the "QuickGraphics" patch set. it will appear in a future main release.

QuickGraphics is still available for download on the alternate viewers page, but may keep getting auto-updated to 4.0 until new RCs with higher version numbers are built. LL slows down during holidays, so an updated QuickGraphics could take a little while to get out there.

if you miss the feature and don't want to wait, you can change the --channel name (for example in a shortcut) to bypass updates for now.  http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Viewer_parameters

Actually, if you just download and install the Quick Graphics Release Candidate from the Alternate Viewers page you'll get the feature back. Users on a release candidate are not updated automatically to new default viewers. It was explicitly downloading the new default viewer that caused the OP to lose the feature.

There will be an update to the Quick Graphics candidate soon after the New Year to pick up the 4.0 features (we are not making any non-emergency changes during the holiday period so that Lindens can relax and enjoy the holidays). If you're running the current version, that update will be automatic (and mandatory).

I agree with Obvious. It doesn't always work as expected. My assumption has been that the Lab could push RC versions to various users to get the test group size they need. In other words it was 100% automated.

But, I do enough odd things will installs that I'm not that good a test case.
