Texturing separate areas of a single mesh object

I've created a dress in Marvelous Designer.  Then I used ZBrush to remesh and I created the UVs from polygroups.  Each polygroup is an area of the clothing item that I want to be able to texture separately.  When flattened the UV shows the separate pieces on the same UV texture properly.  When I import it into Blender, each polygroup is a separate piece following the polygroups exactly.  So far so good.

I want to be able to use a HUD to change the textures of the separate parts of the dress in SL.  But I need to join the pieces in Blender to weight paint them.  Once I upload to SL the clothing item textures properly so the UV map works fine but I can't select separate faces or edit linked because I joined it

I know what I want to do is possible.  What am I doing wrong?
