Okay, so for a while now, I've been wanting to make clothing and other various items for SL, however I am a beginner, and I'm looking for some tips on how I can go about doing this? I have Blender, but I don't have Avastar or anything like that. I made a mesh once (I think?) and tried to upload it into SL, it said it was there, but wouldn't load and then just completely vanished, there goes 25 Lindens.

I'm looking for a fairly easy guide or something, anything to teach me how to make meshes, as eventually I want to make a shop...which brings up another question. Do I need land in SL first, before I can set up a shop? Or can I just put items in the marketplace? Any help is greatly appreciated!

You could start with the "fitted mesh" survival kit:

or with the Avatar Workbench for making "classic mesh"

I personally recommend to begin with the workbench and only get into Fitted Mesh after you mastered "classic mesh" rigging. But i doubt many will listen to that recommendation :matte-motes-sunglasses-1:

If you want to have a shop in world then yes, you need to either own or rent land to put the shop on.  If you want to sell things in Marketplace, you don't need land.  There are advantages/disadvantages to both approaches.  With in-world land, you have monthly rent or land fees.  With Marketplace, you pay LL a 5% commission on every sale.  With a good location in world, you get much better visibility than you'll get if you just plop your stuff into a Marketplace store.  There are no easy answers.  Read https://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Selling-in-the-Marketplace/ta-p/700193 and https://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Selling-objects/ta-p/700143 to start.

If you feel like your mesh making skills might be a little rusty (clothes are some of the most difficult things to make so you need to have the basics down) I have a huge set of what I hope are clear tutorials that go from very beginning to lots of things on Blender Cycles now that I am working on that.

These are WRITTEN tutorials, not videos and often with lots of photos and screenshots. For some folks that works better (no need to keep stopping the video to "get" what they are trying to tell you), for others not so good. So it will depend on how you learn.  Most are for folks with some Blender experience but there is also a 'first projects' list where you start off making a crate (think a prim with texture) so it doesn't get much easier than that.

The full list is here:  https://plus.google.com/100190052320604204973/posts/XD1KKUNKLAK

Be sure and use the beta grid for uploading and testing. NO need to spend money while you are learning.

As much as I love fitted mesh over regular mesh (since regular mesh almost always uses the crappy standard sizing system) I have to agree that it's easier to rig standard mesh since it won't react to 3/4 of the sliders, thus less clipping problems. Then you have creators like Maitreya who refuses to release a dev kit so rigging for that body is a complete pain in the rear. Thankfully most other mesh body creators have publically available weighting kits.
