Yes racism really is a big issue, and quite prevalent in SL which is overwhelmingly mono-racial along Caucasian lines.

That said its not hard to also avoid - racism outs itself very fast here and while very prevalent, is not the majority.

There are plenty of places that are populated by people of the African diaspora, or people favorable to Africans such as myself (my avatar is African, but I am only slightly west African, being mostly Asian-Mulato).

A persistent problem I find in seeking African friendly communities is the number of 'blaxploitation' venues focused on negative stereotypes or racist-porn.

But to find postive venues, here are two launching points:

The "Africa Live" group - which announces events related to Africa. The people attending those events are a lot more likely to be or care about Africa / Africans genuinely.

"Irie Vibes" - a very old reggae club. The club seems to be 'in the wind' often moving location or being rebuilt on the same place (not sure anymore). But of the various reggae clubs, even though this one is run by a group of caucasian women, they have always been of a positive mind and I've seen a good few people from the Caribbean at the place over the years.

There's a number of other places as well. Particularly in the 'shopping' arena - but that's not exactly helpful in the 'finding friends' category.

Maybe your problem is not so much racism, or more accurately, unverifiable fake skin colouring, but that you are sending out extremely mixed messages, given your avatar name . . .

That is a good point. The original poster seemed aware of it too.

My own name's first two syllables has given people pause on enough occaisions - and the full word itself is a normal one. What I get for it is mild compared to what the original poster's name causes; I would imagine. Putting a swear word into the second half of one's name puts a barrier you have to overcome in every encounter. If the avatar isn't too well built up at this point - I'd switch accounts to a new main and make the old one an alt that you slowly phase out.

I am Jamaican and quite new to SL it woud be lovely to have some friends who are of the same background or could relate to my culture.

I would suggest that you create a new thread rather than piggy-back on one that is almost 3 years old and where the title is not specifically what you just posted that you are looking for.
