LunasMoons
I am kinda lost you pay for premium to buy land but you also have to pay in lindens to buy the mainland right? So when I also pay in lindens is it a one time price for the mainland? Thank you-Lunamoons
Qie Niangao
You probably understand this, but just to be sure: not all SL land is Mainland, and the alternative "Estate" land doesn't require Premium membership. There are both the up-front purchase price of land and monthly "tier" fees. The up-front cost to buy tends to be higher for Mainland than Estates, but the monthly fees can be lower. The first 512 sq.m. of Mainland are a free "bonus" that's bundled with Premium membership, so the example 1536 sq.m. would need an additional 1024 sq.m. of tier paid each month -- that's US$8 / month or about L$462 / week (many Estates give weekly rates). I'll just mention that the 1024 sq.m. tier-paying level is particularly inefficient, and at that level it can be more attractive to either rent instead of own, or add more Premium alt accounts for their 512 bonus tier combined for Group-owned land (which earns an additional 10% discount.) That looks crazy at first, but Premium membership fees aren't that expensive on the annual plan, when offset by the weekly stipends over the full year. There also used to be (maybe still are?) businesses that would rent out tier instead of land. I'm not sure if that's an option anymore, nor whether it works out to a savings. In theory, it could, because sim-scale tier is a lot less expensive per sq.m. than smaller holdings. That's also why Mainland rentals are cost-effective.
