0 Abigail Longmeadow
You do not need to have a premium account to rent any size land from a landlord (another user who owns land). You do need to have a premium account if you want to buy virtual land on the mainland. The difference is when you own mainland, you pay tier directly to Linden Lab, not to landlord. Be aware of the "Maturity Rating" of each region, and how that limits what you can do. If you want mainland, there is an auction page here: http://usd.auctions.secondlife.com/lin/auction/auction/list/ https://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Buying-land/ta-p/700043 It is also possible to buy land dirctly in-world, throught the About Land menu item, if the parcel is for sale. The map (Control M) can be set to highlight all land that is directly set for sale.
0 Lindal Kidd
If you don't need a huge number of prims, but are looking primarily for a large land area, you might consider looking for 1/4 or 1/2 sim parcels on "Homestead" regions owned by a Private Estate owner. A Homestead region only supports 1/4 the prims of a regular Full region (3750 prims per region vs. 15000) and can only support 20 avatars in the region at a time. However, the rent on them is less...you could probably rent 1/2 of a Homestead region for around $70-75 USD per month. Tier on a 1/2 mainland region is $125 USD per month. You also don't have to be a Premium member to rent land from a Private Estate owner.
