Hi Westlight,

If you enable forwarding of IMs to e-mail, those forwarded messages actually allow replies back in-world. The strange address in the forwarded e-mail is constructed by the SL servers to uniquely identify the message thread that any reply should be directed to. Notice that the domain of the address is "im.agni.lindenlab.com", which holds the clue that the address is for returning an IM ("agni" is the main grid). Without that address, you'd not be able to reply to whoever sent you the IM. Also note that this reply ability doesn't last forever. After about five days, any attempt to reply to an e-mail forwarded IM will fail.
