Land Generally is not free. It cots money to run the servers. You can get a premium account and get free linden home or 512 parcel wihtout tier.. But of course the premium account costs money.

Having a premiu account pays 300 lindens a week stipend. It almost pays for it self......

Land is never free, and even if it is for you it's not free for the person providing you the land. If you maybe can get friends with people they might eventually invite you to stay at their land

There's a trick I've seen where people can attach stuff and just squat, and make it look as if they have a house and land but really they are just sad, sad squatters pretending. Go do that! :-)

Way back in 2008/2009 there used to be a free land of sorts it was more a glorified sandbox with 2 week object returns called Trilegy that took up 3 and a half mainland sims but the person running the sims vanished from SL stopped paying tier and "free" land was no more and there's been nothing like it since

These days with out getting chummy with someone who is paying LL for land and feeling generous enough to let you stay free if you want land you'll either have to go premium and buy land or rent from a landlord

There have been places with free land in the past but generally that is not the case any longer. I have seen (on this forum and just recently) skyboxes for a linden a week or whatever. I assume they are small and not furnished much. Sometimes folks rent these out to have traffic on their land but these days traffic isn't a big thing in much of the search algorithms, so not so much.

If you actually want land you can rent VERY cheaply if you go through the classifieds and do some hunting. Many places for $25 a week still. You can make that on the Realms without much trouble. 

 

Or you can be homeless LOL. That works too. There are plenty of great places to hang out.

Almost Free Land

There are ways to play the system to get almost free land. If you were to just buy/lease a region you would be paying something near US$300/mo. Penny Patton has figured out a way to get and use land at very low prices. See: http://pennycow.blogspot.com/2016/09/virtual-spaceinfinite-space.html

She has a way to get 4,096 sq m for US$98/year... quite the deal.
