Hi eamedo,

Even if the sharing of cache files were possible, it would take you as long to download them from another resident as from SL. And it would probably take even longer for most people to upload those cache files, as most ISP upload speeds are far lower than download speeds. It's also highly unlikely that anyone's cache would contain files of interest to you. Mine would be full of textures from Forgotten City, which you might never visit. SL is full of terabytes of textures. Your cache cannot hold more than a few gigabytes.

Second Life does not operate like most online games, where you can download a large portion of the game's data to your hard drive and thereby speed up performance.

In SL, most textures are user created, and the world is subject to change at a moment's notice.  This requires a lot more downloading of things on a regular, ongoing basis.  Your texture and object caches can help speed things up a little bit, especially if you stay mostly in one region.  But as soon as you teleport somewhere else, things have to be downloaded to you again.

You can help matters a little by increasing the amount of space you give your cache on your hard drive.  However, this also means that when you have to clear or move your cache, the operation is going to take a while!

It's a tradeoff.  SL has a lot lower performance than a lot of online games, but on the other hand, we have the flexibility to create our world ourselves, rather than relying on some team of game designers to do it for us.
