Oooo, I know this one!

It's not a game? :P I mean maybe it is, maybe some people treat it that way. For me though, I "play" Second Life for the same reason that I play real life - the alternative is dull.

  • Second Life is where a lot of my friends are, so I keep logging in.
  • It's a good example of a place where I can create the things I want, with the level of complexity I want.

I've very little attachment to the platform, it's the people. If Second Life were a game - if I could treat it like a game - I wouldn't still be here.

Hope this helps!

Hey, I just wanted to start a discussion about why people play the game? I am interested to know different opionions as it is such a different game to others that there must be some interesting idea sout there.

Thank you!

Why do you play the game of life?

I play SL because I have severe mysophobia, which prevent me from going outside(I can, but I have to take quite a long shower when I get back in). SL provides me the means to have the life I wish I had, to where I can go out and meet people and explore places without my mysophobia getting in the way.

It's not exactly a replacement for having a first life, but it works for me.

I play SL because it's a video game that doesn't require me to raid or do PVP. I started playing SL because I wanted to try my hand at online video game roleplaying and see how that differs from tabletop. I like SL for many of the same reasons I liked City of Heroes or Star Wars Galaxies; it's about making a living character that I enjoy playing.

I also use SL as a vehicle for getting back into 3D modeling and to get better at Photoshop. I've been trying to get better since I stepped away from animation in high school and have been struggling to get back into it ever since.

It's my job. I'm a creator and over the years have owned other businesses such as clubs and estates where I rented out land, in addition to creating.  I don't work in RL.  I work in SL or other similar grids.

I also have a lot of friends and a long time partner I've known for years and years, from all over the world.   I guess in that sense it functions part of the time as a social network because we do socialize and have fun after work visiting each other and doing things together that friends do in RL.  These people are the same as my RL friends.  My partner is my partner in all worlds.

We take time once in a while to explore SL as well as other grids.  We don't play games other than some card or table games with friends.  My avatar's personality is not a character.  It's just me, the same as I am in RL.

So all in all SL is not a game to me at all, although I do have a RL too.

I've no idea why I use (not 'play') SL. For many of my years here, it was hobby that earned money, but I ended that a few weeks ago, and yet I still log in every day, and stay logged in all the time I am in my RL home, but I don't actually do anything. I don't get out and about to meet and socialise with people any more. I don't go anywhere or do anything. Yet I still log in because I don't want to just turn away completely from SL, but I've no idea why.

Maybe subconciously, I'm waiting for something to turn up - something to do, that is. I've lived my RL like that: i.e. stop doing what I've been doing and wait for something, or some idea, to turn up. Occasionally I've waited years. My guess is that I'm living my SL in the same way.

That's current. Probably a better reply to your question is why I previously used SL. That's an easy one. It was a money-making hobby. I came to SL 10 years ago, having only had experience of a scrolling text MUG (long long ago), and, because of that, the idea of moving around in a 3D graphic environment was right up my street. That was the reason for me. I stayed because I went into business here.

I don't play games.  I'm a scripter, so I am in SL because that's where my clients are.  I'm a landowner, so I am here because that's where my tenants are.  I enjoy conversations with witty, intelligent people, so I am here because I found a great community of very smart people when I arrived ten years ago and I keep finding more all the time.  I learn something new here every time I log in.
