What was the use behind it and how does it benefit us?

The server takes over a portion of graphical rendition so the client ( your viewer ) has less to load. This applies not to your own avatar, but applies to the appearance of others.

The only option you had to decrease this load used to be avatar imposters, afaik.

It's pretty clear from this description, from over a year ago.

As I think about it, I can almost make up a story for how a tiny subset of users with really crappy routers could find that Server Side Appearance pushed them over the edge for network connections. Most should be able to get back to normalcy just by rebooting their routers, but if I try really hard I can imagine a way that maybe, maybe a few might have persistent problems that could possibly require getting a proper, functioning router.
