I can't log in since I accepted the new download today.

It's hard to say, but the viewer may have been damaged during the download or installation.  It's not unusual, especially if your Internet connection is a little wonky so it hiccups during the download.  You'll need to download a fresh copy and try again.  Before you do, though, reboot both your router and your modem to let them get a clean grasp on an IP address.  Just unplug them both from the power for a few minutes and then restart everything.  Incidentally, avoid using a wifi connection.  Linden Lab neither supports nor recommends wifi because of the possibility of data corruption and signal loss. Use a direct cable or DSL connection instead.
