Texturing - Default vs. Planar?

In a planar setting you set a repetition per meter. If you have multiple different faces with the same texture you can use the same value for every one.

Most TPV's have a texture align tool that adjusts a texture over multiple faces so it fits seamless. You need planar setting for that.

The only advantage of the standard setting is: you can easily stretch a texture so it fills the whole face.

Other than texturing oddly shaped prims, is there a good reason to use planar rather than default?

The general rule is to use default as ... well the default ... and planar when necessary. Unlike default mapping, planar is client side and does cause a tiny little bit of extra lag and may in theory at least cause problems with textures being applied differently by different viewers.

In reality there's very little difference though so don't be afraid to use planar when necessary.

You can do that with default mapping too.

All viewers have that function and athough you need to set textures to planar when applying autoalign, you can usually revert to default afterwards.
