If you can't rez even with a default (character test) avatar, the problem is most likely your internet connection.  Unplug your router and internet modem, wait a couple of minutes, then plug them back in and let them reboot.  If you use a wifi connection, try using an ethernet cable instead.  Try using the free public Google DNS servers: https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using

If none of the above works, here are more things to investigate: http://blog.nalates.net/2011/10/26/troubleshoot-your-sl-connection/

Character test is only one of many things you can try >>> http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_bake_fail

If you are having a chronic bake fail problem, suspect your Internet connection.  We all have a couple of seconds of cloudiness when we log in, because our appearance files are still downloading from the SL servers.  Normally, it clears up right away.  If you have a flaky connection, though, the files can either be corrupted as they download or the download can time out before it is finished.  The first thing to do is to get off of wifi, if you have been using it.  Linden Lab neither supports nor recommends wifi.  Then, reboot both your router and your modem and restart everything.  If you need more advanced suggestions, consult Nalates's blog >>> http://blog.nalates.net/2011/10/26/troubleshoot-your-sl-connection/
