Chat and IM logs

By default, Second Life automaticallys saves local chat and IM conversations to log files on your hard drive.

Log files

Log files are saved to a location that depends on you operating system:

  • Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\SecondLife\Avatarname\chat.txt
  • Windows 7 and Vista: C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\SecondLife\chat.txt
  • Mac OSX: Users/Username/Library/Application Support/SecondLife/Avatarname/chat.txt

Where Username is your system account name and Avatarname is your Second Life username.

You'll see there are lots of text files in the folder. Each text file contains chat between you and your friend, group, and such. You can delete them if you don't need.

In addition to Ry0ta's excellent answer, you can turn off logging in Preferences/Privacy.

I don't recommend this.  There are times when chat and IM logs can be useful.

Also, the Knowledgebase article is slightly incorrect.  The file path for Windows7/Vista isn't quite what that says...but it will get you close enough to find the log files.

This article would be very useful if it provided the folder path for the chat files for Windows 10 please.

....... it's the same as the other W versions... might be only a little folder name difference

when you have multiple accounts also add / avater-name/ before the  / chat txt

Readers should also understand the following:  While it is possible for you to disable chat logging on YOUR computer, or find and erase YOUR chat logs, you can't do anything about chat logs that OTHER people are keeping.  Plus, Linden Lab logs all chat and keeps it for at least a little while, in case they need it to investigate abuse reports.
