You should be able to see yourself plainly.  The camera automatically positions itself when you right click your avatar and select Appearance/Edit Shape.

If the camera's default position is messed up, there are several things you can do.

You can also permanently change the default camera position by editing your Debug settings.  Put the Advanced menu on your top menu bar with CTRL+ALT+D, then choose Advanced/Show Debug and type CameraOffsetFrontView in the debug settings search entry bar.  Experiment with the settings here.  Also, CameraOffsetRearView adjusts the camera's normal position as it follows above and behind your avatar.

If you just need to temporarily move your camera, for example to see the other side of yourself, or get close to your face, see my blog post, "Camming".

If you need to be able to move your camera even closer, or inside objects, (or much, much farther away) then go to the Advanced menu again and check "Disable Camera Constraints."  I leave this checked all the time.
