You could start with Photoshop Elements if you are ready to spend some Dollars (the complete CS5 and CS6 versions are expensive). If you need Photoshop for SL, that should be enough to start with as one of the major feature that is not in PS Element is the CMYK one: you don't need it for SL, RGB colors feature is enough.
If you are looking for a free photo editing program, you can give a look at Gimp. Maybe less user friendly but it's a good way to get you started;

Gimp is free and can do most anything photoshop can do. Many people use it, including fashion designers. Most photoshop brushes work with Gimp. And you can also get a lot of special effect filters and plug ins for it..

Agree with previous post, if you have no experience start with GIMP, which is free, and will give you an idea of photo programs, but if you get yours hands on Photoshop, try and read as much tutorials as you can and practice them ofcourse
