Hi there.

I am trying to figure out how to make a animated gif file to dispay in SL.. I know its not really a gif file but a sequence of frames in a png or targa texture.

I have tried Perigrine and that doesnt work at all, it takes the animted gif to convert and gives back nothing but a page of broken links.

Is there a handy program to convert a animated gif to a targa texture of X by Y frames?

Peregrine has apparently been gone for a while.  That's shame, since it was a standard tool in SL for many years.  If you do a Google search for "convert animated gif", though, you'll find a good selection of programs you can use.  Out of curiosity, I just tried http://www.zamzar.com/convert/gif-to-png/ , which isn't quite as convenient as Peregrine was but it's fast and free.  You get back a stack of PNG files that you have to stitch together in Photoshop or GIMP to make a single texture.  It's a mild nuisance, but not really much work.

And yes, you can convert to TGA with it too, not just PNG.

Download The GIMP graphics program (I have 2.8 not sure if latest)

Open your animated GIF file (it will appear as seperate layers)

Select Filters -> Combine -> Film Strip and play with settings.

That will give you a long set of 'cels' and you can cut and paste in groups to fit within the SL max 1024 by 1024 format (or smaller if you can)

Not quite automatic but easy and quick plus can export in a viariety of file types

I used this page, it has the perfect tools listed for the whole process.

Outworldz

The tool GIF 2 SL Animated Texture Program for Windows is perfect. Small and fast. Found at:

 http://www.outworldz.com/Secondlife/Posts/gif/Create-Gif-in-Second-Life.htm

Saves you a lot of tiling in photoshop or gimp.

Here's the script that goes with it.

MultiGIF_menu_1.lsl

Personally, i use the tool from ezgif to edit the gifs, or even make some. they have an excellent file deletion policy.

http://ezgif.com/

Good luck with that!

A GIF image is a lossless format of an image file with or without featuring animated images. So, an animated image the combination of static image files, then they are converted and compressed to an animated image, which the objects within the image are moving. It seems like a video. If you search on the internet, you’ll find so many online image editing tools that allow you to make an animated GIF image online. But here you’ll find out how to make animated GIF in Photoshop.

It's interesting to me that all of the last three posts in this old thread have posted a link to the same very good tutorial but failed to read the OP's question, posted back in 2015. He's not interested in making a GIF.  He has one already. What he wants to know is how to convert a GIF into a PNG or TGA file that can be imported into SL, since you cannot bring a GIF in world.  As he notes, the old Peregrine conversion program hasn't been around for years. Fortunately, there are several new ones that work quite well.  You can find them with a simple Google search (or  here for GIF to TGA).
