It is not MANDATORY, but I always do.  I am a mother, and I know darn well that I would not have wanted MY kids, when they were under 18, to be noodling around in Second Life.

It all depends on how you view your own responsibility in SL.  There's nothing in the TOS that says you need to be a watchdog for other people's bad behavior.  Some people would take that to mean that you should keep your nose out of other people's business unless they are messing with your fun in SL.  I agree with Lindal on this one, though.  As a parent/grandparent and as a retired educator, I feel that I have some responsibility for the junior adults around me.  SL is an adult world.  Kids under 18 really don't belong here.  For their own safety, I will AR a resident if suspect that s/he's underage.

It's not mandatory and I believe the age to sign up for SL is 16 now.  16 and 17 year olds can be on (G)eneral rated lands, and 18 and over can be on (G)eneral, M(oderate) and A(dult) rated lands.

I would also report anyone who admits to being an under 18 user in Moderate or Adult areas, but it is not mandatory.
