Visit in Second Life Global Warming Winter by Rachel Breaker Global Warming Winter acknowledges the obvious catastrophic global changes that are ongoing. Rachel expresses a realization of how absurd our dystopic future(s) really could be. Her built environment is a nod to simulated climates of outdoor waterparks. In this installation, she critiques the materiality of simulated natural environments, a motif we may end up seeing more of as our myriad of climates progressively alter. 13. The latest “Second Life Destinations” video takes viewers on a trip to Paris in Second Life. Designed by longtime SL resident Trouble Dethly Crystal, Vive La Paris was built as a special gift by the creator for his girlfriend in Argentina. “Whether it is her favorite song posters adorning the walls of the music store, the outdoor gallery of some my favorite images by her, to the cheese and flower shop and everything in between, the region is my love letter to her,” says Dethly. Highlights of the region featured in the video include the Eiffel Tower, shops, cafes, and an outdoor exhibit of Second Life photography. “Initially, the region was only meant to be rented for two weeks like the other date experiences I have taken her on, where I would hire a couple of live singers for a private show...This time I even had a friend roleplay as a waitress so we could experience a full-service dinner. It was after this date that Ara and I decided to keep the region to share with others to explore, to use as a backdrop for their photographs, or even take their partner or friends for a full-service roleplay dinner.” Vive La Paris is only one of several vacation destinations you can explore in Second Life. Take a look at this recent list of seven of our favorite virtual travel hot spots worth exploring from the comfort of home. Vive La Paris Each footstep tread softly upon its cobblestone streets, echoes in my thoughts of you. There is such beauty and depth found in the richness of its history and culture. Its withstood so much yet it endures, still breathtaking and strong. You remind me of Paris. Visit in Second Life CREDITS: Video Production: Draxtor Despres
  14. When it comes to Summer 2020, smooth sailing might not be the first phrase to come to mind. However, with Summer Sailstice coming up, we have a virtual event to help turn this ship around. Second Sailstice, the annual worldwide celebration of sailing, will take place in Second Life the week of June 13th-20th and just might be the largest virtual sailing event to date! SL resident Dale Irata [David Bloch in RL] originally came up with the idea, and it has grown immensely due to the abundance of creative energy among SL residents as well as his belief that “There are no limits on us here.” The real world Summer Sailstice always takes place on the Saturday closest to the Northern Hemisphere Summer Solstice, but there is also a weeklong Nautical Exposition with events and live performances. Summer Sailstice in SL is an official Sailstice event and has been featured in their promotional channels to the RL sailing community. This is of particular importance this year, since many people do not have the ability to attend in person due to coronavirus restrictions. All experience levels of virtual sailors are encouraged to participate. For any newbies feeling shy or hesitant, the Second Sailstice Novice Regatta competition is even offering free boats. This year’s event will also feature a “Sails and Tails” party, and the mer community will be making appearances in the water and around the boats. There will be races, cruises, boat shows, and parties. Click here for more information on sailing in Second Life. If you’d like to practice stretching your avatar’s sea legs, take a peek at the Sailing & Boating regions in the Destination Guide. Come check out the events and #raiseyoursail! Summer Sailstice in Second Life Summer Sailstice is the annual celebration of sailing that happens every year on the Saturday closest to the summer solstice; this is their 20th year! The idea is simply to get as many people around the world out on a sailboat on the same day. In 2020, because of the pandemic, it is safer to move to virtual sailing! Summer Sailstice in SL is officially registered as a Summer Sailstice Event. If you’re already a sailor in SL, visit this location to find out how you can register and join the inworld group to participate in this event on June 20th. 15. This week’s “Second Life Destinations” video explores “The Empire of Dreaming Books,” an elaborate region that features a vast system of tunnels and catacombs worth getting lost in. If you venture far enough, you’ll also encounter the largest bookcase that you will find in any world - virtual or otherwise. Inspiration for the project comes from a passion for the Zamonia series of books by German author Walter Moers, according to Num Bing who co-created the elaborate region with her boyfriend Clifton Howlet. “There are books everywhere,” says Bing. “There’s no electricity. It’s [filled with] candle lights [and] all kinds of little book shops, restaurants [and] little houses...Outside the little city, we have added all the pretty little things that you like for kind of quiet serene moments. There’s a small stream, a garden, and trees.” The ambitious project represents the first Second Life region created by the duo. “Our visitors and all of their positive feedback have surprised and humbled us, and we are both very excited to see how much our creation is being enjoyed,” says Bing. To learn more, watch the video or explore it inworld. The Empire of Dreaming Books Welcome to the Empire of Dreaming Books! 16. The popular live music venue Lutz City of Templemore is in the focus of this week’s “Second Life Destinations” video. Home to frequent performances by many of Second Life’s most popular musicians, Templemore is a full city with apartment buildings, businesses, outdoor areas with a little chapel, hidden pianos and many ambient and nested stages -- all drenched in soft green hues like a film set designed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. The region is dedicated to the late Garrett Lutz, a patron of live music in SL who managed many artists and venues before he passed away in 2017. Prior to his death, Lutz described Templemore as a “live music venue [that] features a grand stage where musicians become part of a living painting that reaches out to your very soul. Lutz City of Templemore isn't just a sim, it's home for your creative spirit.” That spirit is still very much alive under current owner Luis Lockjaw, who has integrated all of Garett’s favorite aspects of Templemore into its most current form. Musician Oblee, who is our tour guide this week, has played many Second Life venues over the years, but he says that Templemore is among his top favorites because of its particular charm due to its subtle mood, soft lighting, and overall beauty. “It’s a work of art,” he says. “I play a lot of local clubs but I really like playing in Second Life because there is such a great appreciation for original music,” says Oblee. “The importance of music in a time of social isolation is vastly understated.” The song Oblee is playing in this video is an original live improvised tune called "Shapeshifter." You can visit Lutz City of Templemore in Second Life via its entry in the Destination Guide, which also features several more live music venues worth exploring. To learn more about Oblee, visit his official website. CREDITS: Video production: Draxtor Despres

  21. As health officials continue to warn against public gatherings amidst the current coronavirus outbreak, many people are seeking out online outlets that can serve as an adequate substitute for their in-person religious services and spiritual communities. Many are flocking to the virtual world Second Life, which is already home to many thriving religious and spiritual online communities that help people connect with others who share the same values and beliefs. In Second Life, the sense of presence is just much more powerful because of it being an actual place where communities can feel togetherness on a much deeper level than in other online platforms. This week’s “Second Life Destinations” video explores a good cross-section of the many places of worship and communities that span across all spiritual and religious denominations. In Second Life, you’ll find a diverse range of representations including Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism and even some free-form places of spirituality like Wicca. Among the virtual world locations featured in this video are: Dornoch Cathedral, Scotland Bhaktiville Ross Mosque Buddha Center The Monastery House of Prayer Church Ganesh Temple & Gardens St. George Orthodox Christian Church Kingdom of Nubia Israel Island Temple Beth Chayei Olam To see even more, visit the Spirituality & Belief category in the Second Life Destination Guide. 23. I see that some of the Linden Wilderness Sims are gone now, although they still remain in the Destination Guide. Leech, Tapir, Piranha, Gecko, Capybara, all not there anymore. Was there a notification or blog entry concerning the removal of these sims? If there was, I sure missed it! I've been going to the Wilderness sims a few times a year since they were created. I enjoyed the boats, the paths, some of features that worked, and the fishing. The quests ofc have been dead a long time. Yeah, I didn't live there, never saw many people there, but there are tons of Linden places of less quality or function that still remain (not gonna mention the Moonbase). 😜 I gotta say I am going to miss them. They were my favorite vacation destination. Or get away from everyone destination. *chuckle*

  25. This week’s “Second Life Destinations” video visits Citta Bhavana, an ashram run by Chraeloos Aristotelous. Citta Bhavana, which in Sanskrit means "cultivating heart/mind," is a peaceful ashram for meditation, yoga, discussion, philosophy, spirituality, music and art. It also showcases teachings from Asia (India, Japan, China, Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism) and Africa. It was originally opened in 2014 with the help of Sunshine Szavanna, Rhiannon Dragoone, and Swami Luminos. “We wanted a place where anybody can come together to talk and get to know each other’s philosophies,” says Aristotelous. “People want to be able to learn from everybody - bridging heart and mind. We tend to meditate when we think we need to - but really we should be meditating every day.” Participants come from all over the world and from various different beliefs and backgrounds, but share a common desire: to connect in a respectful and open-hearted manner. The venue offers guided meditations and instruction, yoga sessions, philosophy and science discussions, dances and live music, and poetry and storytelling events. These unifying and calming social experiences are more important now than ever during these difficult times, says Aristotelous. “People are all of the sudden isolated, like a lot of chronically-ill people have been for their whole lives,” she adds. “It’s kind of an awakening in a way for a lot of the general population.” According to Aristotelous, the main focus of the venue is to make discussions and events accessible for people with all forms and abilities. “Second Life offers accessibility. It also offers a community. In Second Life, you can be as embodied in it as you choose to be,” she adds. “The people who find video games to be a separation from themselves can control their avatars in ways that they definitely can’t elsewhere and that adds a level of embodiment to it that is unique.” To learn more, watch the video, visit the ashram’s Facebook page or check it out in Second Life.
