  1. I am, and I will forever be a n00b to mesh. However, I have learned a few things in my current learning curve with Blender and importing Mesh in to SL. For instance I tend to build relatively small and when it is imported to SL--when I'm done diddling around--I will enlarge it. Part of the reason I do this is just an economy of space. When I go onto the beta grid rather than sucking up a large swath of the sim with my build, I build small in Blender and test (relatively) small in-world. I see no difference in the textures or mesh beyond the Li increase when I go big. I can still zoom in, around, and through my builds as if it were larger.
  2. Ok... Now I am truly curious! I'm a long time resident of SL and (I like to think) I've seen it all. Nothing really phases me anymore. I once had a provocative sunset rendezvous with a floating, blood-shot eyeball. As for the gender thing. I'm a firm believer in you are who you present yourself to be. Whatever exists behind the keyboard in the damp basement of their mother's home is their deal not mine. But...if you're are going to present as a female BE that female. I don't want to hear about your painful prostate surgery. In my experience there are a LOT of 30-50 yr old women on SL. Back in 2007-8 I would have said that 90% of females who lie in dark corners of the grid are males who are infatuated with looking at their naked avatar. But I don't think that is true anymore, and like I said. I don't care. Oh... and another thing. I have met more than a few male avatars who are female in RL, who have chosen this persona to avoid the constant badgering of talking dangling bits. I created an Avatar for my RL wife. Her avatar name is Trix. My wife comes-in world a couple of times a year but really doesn't groove on all the fiddling around with buttons. So every once in a while (once or twice a month) I will take Trix out for a spin, update her looks and various attachments (I have to buy NEW clothes for LaraX, really?) and visit new places. (so After Taste spa is just a copy of Breathe spa with more pools?) and generally get in touch with my female side. My female persona is VERY different than my male avi. I have no explanation for this other than, "It's what comes out." I'm probably working out mommy issues. At to the answer for the original question? I have no clue where an interesting, literate, female would meet other interesting literate females with a call to explore their sapphotic attraction beyond the current and questionable meat market of clubs. I'll be following this thread to find out.
  3. The last couple of years (decade) have been rough. I went from teaching full-time at college while simultaneously running a professional illustration studio (60 to 80 hr weeks) to being housebound with barely an ability to walk or stand. Last year, after nine months in PT/OT rehab where I could not leave my bed I’ve learned a few things. 1. I am grateful every day for the mobility I have, rather than focusing on what mobility I’ve lost. At the same time I am thrilled with the opportunities that SL gives me to move, and socialize, and build, and enjoy virtual sunsets. Living most of your life within four walls is a special kind of torture. SL provides an escape and respite from this reality. 2. I’ve been forced to simplify my RL and by extension, my SL. I’ve always been so focused on making money and growing my business (thus the hours) that I missed a *****load of stuff. The same was true in SL. I had three alts, with distinct personalities. (Because SL is actually a psychological experiment in multiple personality disorder.) and all three built stuff and I funneled the products into a store and was consumed by stats, and visits, and trends. I now have one avatar and while I still built and sell stuff I couldn’t care less about its marketability, success, or any kind of coherent theme. I build because I love It and that’s my non-business model. I now have time to explore more. 3. I’ve always been an introvert. My energetic popular professor-ship that stood in front of a hundred students and enthusiastically espoused the wonders of photoshop and digital illustration was an exhausting mask that sucked the life out of me. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVED the teaching, it was just draining. In SL I have been a lot more selective in who are actually my friends what groups I join, and what activities I participate in. My RL interaction with people is extremely limited. So I am grateful for the interaction opportunities that SL provides. 4. I hate grief-ing and trolls. I will never understand the thrill it must be to be a professional ***** and crap on another persons SL experience. Since joining SL 18 yrs ago I’ve been told by griefers to get a life! Get a life? Really? Because deliberately offending and belittling, and bullying residents is such an example of a life well lived? Truly, it just baffles me.   5. I wouldn't say "always." Although there is a benefit to providing existing on-campus students accessibly like tying together multiple satellite campuses (courses, teachers -- like the State University of New York--SUNY) there is also an insurance liability with conducting after hours classes on a dark campus with vastly a reduced student presence and security. On top of that virtual classes have a lower facility overhead and gives colleges a broader base of adjunct professors. As you said, There are many reasons for a virtual solution. The main reason are accessibility and cash. A vast ocean of potential students would like to go to college, but can't because of day work, kids, distance, or physical disabilities. Also, from the college POV, remote classes increases the schools bottom line. More students mean more tuition. Colleges want to educate and provide flexibility to those who already have access, as well as those who don't, as well as those who might start or even better, finish degrees that were left because of life. In 2006 remote education was in its infancy. Technology for such classes wasn't up to speed and to tell the truth there were psychological resistance from schools whose "identity" was locked to a brick and mortar experience. Covid lit a fire for educators to find remote solutions quickly. With current technology similar to zoom I'm unsure that virtual avatar simulations are still relevant, but I'm positive that remote education solutions for all is here to stay.

  7. This thread is two years old, but wanted to add my experience and voice to the archive. In Dec 2005 I was asked by my college division chair to investigate/research pedagogical uses for SL that could be used/tested during the upcoming summer semester. I'm not sure why he chose me, but it fell into my lap and I said sure, why not? At the time I taught RL students how to use the Adobe Creative suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign.) I also taught History of Typography, a Drawing for Designers class, a Digital Illustration class and basic intro to 3D modeling. For the next four months I investigated SL and was impressed. (I set up my personal account April 2006). Although the college didn't use SL for summer semester, I was approved to introduce it to students as part of my course curriculum that fall (2006). Around this time I got involved in the University of Idaho's education sim with the idea of setting up a transfer program to their game design program. I set up 15 avatars with passwords that I controlled and shared with students. I encouraged them to explore the orientation areas on their own, but I also gave them a basic tutorial on SL inventory, moving, rezzing objects and basic prim modeling. I reminded them that I would be able to see where they went and to focus on the assignment. After a week of messing around, I taught and assigned the creation of regular textures, tiling textures, alpha textures and the creation of a simple SL object in the UofI sandbox using those textures. The whole experience was well received by the students and over the course of two years a few of them created their own private accounts and added me as a friend. I was ready to expand the use of SL and I gave a basic introduction to other instructors on how they could use media and virtual instruction over a wide geographic area to augment their classes. This proved to be difficult. The issue wasn't the students, it was attempting to get a tenured Phd professors to break out of their teaching rut and give it a try. By 2007-08 the intense media coverage of sex in SL distorted the overall picture and made admin nervous. To be truthful I was nervous as well. I bumped into students exploring (with their own avi's) and tried to explain that SL was like a trip to Vegas. If you are looking for breathtaking vistas you can find it here. If you want strip clubs and brothels you can find that too. To which one of my students said, "and what you do in Vegas stays in Vegas!" I smiled through cringed teeth. Ultimately I was asked to back it out of my curriculum which I did with a sigh of relief. To this day, when I go to a club or event (Like Liquid9 lounge), I wonder if one of my ex students are there living their own SL dreams and should I be embarrassed/worried by the ever-present adult content or conversations I have with strangers(?) It makes finger fiddling with Vegas slot machines while hoping for a payout a little more real. Due to a spinal injury in 2015 I no longer teach. (Miss the students and instruction, but I DO NOT miss the academic politics). I illustrate children's books from my bed and from time to time build mesh items and live my best life in SL. What a long strange trip it has been.

  9. I have deleted faces to show the underlying geometry. The actual object has inner and outer walls (an inside of the skull and the outside) All the vents are connected and I have merged by distance to eliminate duplicates. I have deleted and rebuilt the affected faces of the nose multiple times. it still comes out the same. Also the verts in edit mode do not correspond to what we see in object mode. When I select object mode (as seen in the picture) there are edges that form a Y on both the inside and outside. but back in edit mode there are no such edges.

If I won the lottery (Publishers Clearing House or whatever) and the accountants and government had figured out what I get to keep, I would invest in Substance painter (Adobe) so I could better paint and texture my mesh builds. It's a pricy Adobe subscription that is outside my Creative Cloud account---because, well...Adobe. I would increase my land holdings. I'm on a 1024 with my premium account and my alt is a jealous freeloader with a boot addiction. She wants her own bed to sleep on. I think it would be cool to create a peaceful sanctuary for the sexually abused. A place with trees to talk to others who have gone through the same horrors, or feel the same guilt, shame, and other misplaced emotions of confusion and consequence that reflect throughout a victim's life. Underneath it all would be a BDSM dungeon to work out the carbon shadow of our demons that have been indelibly etched onto the soul of our inner child. After some thought, It's probably best to just stick with the trees. We can take field trips to destinations for self medicating our addictions. I would make and fund a group owned money tree where members of the group or friends could come weekly and boost their $linden accounts. AANND...just for fun I would build (or have built) a money pit that when jumped into would produce clouds of particle dollar bills for me to roll around in.
  11. I am creating new topology (by hand) for a dragon skull. The skull has an inside wall and an outside wall. While in Edit mode, everything looks fine(fine-ish, I still working on the actual design) but when I swap back to object mode the topology becomes distorted. I have deleted the offending faces to show what I'm working with and these three edges show up but only in object mode. I've been beating my head for a day and can't seem to figure it out. Any ideas what is going on and what I can do to fix it? Thanks in advance.
  12. Thank you both! I was able to adjust the font size and I can see again. The issue was making the adjustment under font and then relogging. The other size changes for Chat etc are live. I appreciate ya'll 🤩
  13. I'm using Firestorm as my main viewer, but as I approach the maturity of a tree, I find it harder and harder to see what is going on in the viewer interface. (Yes, I wear glasses.) I've dug down into preferences and was able to change the chat font size larger. I also discovered how to enlarge the text in scripting. I have found a "console" text size but it doesn't seem to do anything? I've tried making the pref change, and then logging out, then back into SL but again, with no visible change. It's gotten to the point when I need to see stuff, I literally pick up my laptop and bring it closer to my face. Any suggestions?
  14. <sarcasm> I am so SICK and TIRED of people trying to limit my right to LEAVE Second Life on my OWN TERMS. I keep leaving SL, and each time I do I make sure that everyone knows the personal grief and mental anguish from slow-witted residents that I am forced to endure, and that makes my eyeballs bleed spontaniosuly. This is the LAST time I'm saying (writing) this so make sure to copy and paste and send to all your friends. Don't beg me to stay--my mind is made up! No really; I don't need to know how much I am loved or how much I would be missed or how I am a better person for staying despite the wanton stupidity that is everyone else's fault (that they would be spared if they did things my way.) You all will regret it and wished that I were here when I'm gone. Don't try to convince me otherwise. I'm off now to create another alt. You won't know who I am but I'll be watching. P.S. Please feel free to comment on this thread and tell me how right I am. </sarcasm)
  15. here are the screen shots. I do want the indent. the simplified PHYS could be lower but it fits within my house needs. So you are saying that the PHYS model is causing the issue?   16. I have created a rock/stoney hot tube in Blender along with a corresponding PHYS file. I go into second life and open the upload screen. I open the dea file and attach the PHYS file and adjust the LODs. I end up with about 12Li. I upload it into second life and it comes in perfect--12 li. . I then go to features and select prim as physics shape and all of a sudden it jumps to 97? changing the physics shape back to convext hull changes nothing. in a wild grasp I decide to link it to a wooden deck and the combined Li total goes down to 20. but the physic shape need to be defined again. I select prim and it jumps up to 400li? can anybody help me with a deceptively simple solution that I am obviously missing?

  18. I have a Blender object that has four materials assigned to it. When I try to bake a texture for one section of the object all four areas are burned together as one. Because my Blender knowledge is a series of vertical towers surrounded by chasms of ignorance, I assume I'm missing something simple? Am I doing something wrong?
  19. I’m looking for land in a desert sim—Dunes, small scrub, looks like a cross between mars and New Mexico? I don’t see anything on mainland, so private is fine. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
  20. I'm creating a shuttle that I can live in. It will be a mix between Firefly's companion shuttle and a small Jupiter 2. I have a lot of vertical knowledge in Blender in certain areas, but I'm obviously also missing large parts. I'm about ready to focus on texturing my model. I have UV unwrapped the single object and organized the UV sections that I want to assign to different materials. But now I'm stuck. Is there a way to copy and paste the individual UV sections so they are on a corresponding material? I'm probably thinking about this in a brass ackward way. Any help would be appreciated.
  21. For kick and giggles I created mesh paddle in Blender. Long, long ago I (one of my now dead alts) prim built a similar paddle. It contained a SL native system animation (sword strike?) and worked when the paddle was touched. At that time I used a free script from the SLwiki, or maybe one of the SL free script depositories? It also contained a SL native system sound (a smack, snap or gun sound?). The script was lean and simple and for the life of me I can't find it anywhere. I have found similar scripts but they are bloated with stuff I don't need. I am not a SL code guru. I can sometimes cut and paste scripts together or dig into a script and and make simple changes. I need a full perm, simple script that accomplishes the above. As an extra bonus It would be VERY cool if it worked with bento hands. I am open to creative solutions or ideas for other animations/sounds. Maybe a face expression? Ideally it would be low lag. Can anybody help?
  22. I prefer to be taught and to teach. Care and maintenance of a avi is complicated. Any part of the recipe can change at any time, Because of this I prefer teaching. There are often subtleties within each ingredient (like heads, bodies, skin, hair and shape) that makes it dependent upon one another. A lot of these interactions are not documented in the marketing or instructions of a single ingredient so I try to instruct or enlighten without drawn out lectures, histories or diatribes. It helps that I taught Adobe software fundamentals to freshmen college students for ten years. Teaching is about assessing current understanding, building upon it, reassessing and then moving on to the next concept. I understand the sometimes overwhelming malaise of frustration and delight in its innate distilling power of understanding. That being said, as I've indicated in another post, My wife HATES the button and menu diddling around that is congenital in SL She just wants it done! Because I am her husband, I smile and do it for her: no teaching involved. It's nice to have a built-in option that will take care of it for you. And since she's been patiently teaching me how to be a husband (I HATE all the button diddling inherent in being a real person.) for 35 yrs, I give her my full attention and support.
  23. My RL wife only comes into SL a couple times a year, mostly for me so we can go on VRdates. She hates the button and menu fiddling that is inherent in SL. She saw me upgrading my Avi and said she wanted her Avi upgraded as well. (When I come into SL I share the screen with my 60inch TV to keep myself honest. So whatever I do in SL is household public.) She asked for her avi to be thicc rather than model skinny. She didn't want the thunder thighs SL version of thick, just something leaning towards chubby real. So I went to work and bought her a new Lelutka head, I custom created her shape, I bought new skin and and hair. She gave me a big kiss on the forehead for creating her new "look." It was fun to go shopping for a girl again. While I was out shopping for hair I thought it was time I bought myself a new coif. Long ago I discovered that sometimes the best hair for a guy is located in the gals section. This one from Doux is perfect! it's called Tegan and fits my personality so well.
  24. I used to love a sim called Africa? It had wild roaming animals, different terrains, rivers, a waterfall and balloon tours! Maybe it was moved? My link just stopped working one day. I had some amazing conversation with people whist we rode the currents of African sunsets.
