  2. Hello, all. I am new building and some of you have been my best references in my learning, especially Chic Aeon. I have read all the comments and I would love write mine 3 years later to say:

    1. Yes, Sketchup is not the best software to do mesh stuff, but is not so bad. Its tools and ways to do things are more simple than Blender and is nice for people like me that have the custom to draw with pencil from scratch and compose the 3D from the 2D basement, step by step.
    2. Following the advices of some of you. I started to learn Blender, so tough! But the latest versions since 2.8x are very friendly and now Blender develope an add-on to import/export from/to sketchup making easier to clean up the geometry, the principal reason related with this troubles shown in the discussion. I'd tried and is very useful! And now I love Blender too!

In my experience using Skectchup to do mesh and upload to SL I have learned:

    1. The real trouble is how each software calculate the geometry. Since Sketchup planes have two faces by default, Blender planes have just one and to make a wall is necesarry to use two planes or a cube or use nodes to indicate the faces, but, in this case, exporting to SL info is missing instead what happen with Sketchup.
    2. Sketchup make the UVmap automatically, but of course one can edit it in some limited ways, against what happen in Blender where it takes more care and time to do. BTW the new versions of Blender have a new "tools" to make UVmaps and also to asignate individual map faces apart of the assignation of materials what is great!
    3. About tiny tris... This is a very often modeling mistake we do, no matter which software we are using and SL show it better if we use to analize when uploading and not always can be solved simplifying with % of resctriction. Most of times the cause is the existence of lost vertices and/or edges mixed inside the geometry and is very difficult to see with any software, Blender included. But, I suggest to clean up the model using the Blender tools for that. The old tool was "delete duplicates" now, in new versions we have more options, or at least with different names and better organized. So, the most usual are now: "Delete loose", "Limited disolved", "Merge by distance" (similar to delete duplicates). I suggest use these ones in first place and repeat all the necessary times until Blender can't clean up more. The other tools can distort the model if we don't have care. This way is easy to diminish the geometry and simplify it before upload the model.
    4. The width of walls of a house have to be around 15 to 30 cm (same with the floor) otherwise, the physics model let the avatar walk though them by little pieces, the knee, for example. So, I suggest not to erase the planes of the walls, but let them hollow when simplify them to do more eficient the collision model. I suggest this because some erase the exterior face for example if the logic says no avatar will walk near, through or against it. Do things against fools or mistaken or dump avatars. Yes, it arise the geometry and upload price, but not necessarily the LI.
    5. If the model draw curves. be sure make them as simple as you can, example, cilinder with no more than eight sides to avoid tiny tringles and multiplication of them inside the geometry. But, again, it all depends of the model, is not the same a mesh house or a sculpted mesh. Don't be slave of the LI concerns, but think efficiently to reduce lag.
    6. Many think that Location, rotation are very important to affect the geometry and... sorry, no. Are important yes to define the espacial relation of the models against their origin, but it doesn't affect directly on the weight of the geometry and LI or LODs. Affect, yes, the UVmapping and appearence of materials and this way, indirectly, on lag.
    7. When uploading, very simple models don't need a physics model layer and, no matter if the model is made with Skectchup or Blender or Maya or 3D or whatever you can use the inbuild options for physic in the upload window, but, yes, a physic model layer can reduce substancialy the LI of all the model, but not the price to upload. I discovered that combining the model, with the physic model and using analize and simplify options help to reduce LI too and here is something very important that just one builder in SL could enlight me about: the colors code for analize the physic and geometry of a model and their meanings.
    • Blue -Purpule= All physic is ok, but... Is important to define if the shape of the physic is the correct one and the colors don't give any clue about with the exception of how are organized and distributed along the surfaces or showing the colision hull.
    • Green = often is related to lands physics useful for landscapes.
    • Orange-Yellow = The geometry is complex but not a trouble.
    • Red (often as lines and dots linked) = there is a mre or less serious trouble with geometry and there are vertices, edges or faces loose degenerating the final hidden geometry of the model, it means the necessary review and clean up of the model.

And finally, but not finally, LODs are very important and affect as the LI as the upload price. They can be define in the original model in Blender but it affect the renderization inside the Blender no necessarily when uploading to SL. Is important to define the LODs when uplading to control the tirangles and the lag, depending of the kind of piece of model we are uploading and modeling, is not the same LOD for a planter than for a house.

These topics are little hard to understand for some latin people like me. If around are some latin people I have being filming a serie of tutorials in spanish to show and explain my learnings about all this. You can see them or share with your friends following this link to my channel:

  3. Hi, William:

I have to say (as landlord) that since the begining I am concerned about what are you talking, so, I am already offering un my little land cheap houses with not too many prims (basic for rezz things) to give avatars a quite place where to land, share with their friends or enjoy intimacy and romance. I am no the way to grow, slowly, with the help of those who like become tenants and visitors. Just IM me and I will show you since I am still developing the place, but offering "presale" personalized houses and service.

Greetings, hapy holidays and best wishes for 2020

tell us more about your skills in

Well Kweopi, answering your questions, although I am not an expert I have skills:

    1) Texturing, using gimp and other tools related.

    2) Mesh modeling (learning). Most of all using Scketchup (free tool not pro) to do building parts and similar stuff. I know Blender but is the day that I can't dominate it, still learning, slowly.

    3) Scripting. I have some notions. Still learning

About motivation, YEAH! I am motivated to develope my skills, my business and my ideas. About your suggestions with full perms stuff, yeah! I got some stores selling these ones as my favorites and have an especific plan with some of their products already.

Since you want to promote others and be part of a team, have you thought about becoming a customer service representative or other type of assistant with a brand you love? It might be a better fit with your current skill set and you'd probably learn a lot about running a shop in SL.

I will think about very carefully, because I am not thinking "promote" others being part of a team, but is nice idea, but not as "customer service representative" because I would like build my own. Thank you very much.

  6. On 7/21/2019 at 4:29 AM, Bitsy Buccaneer said:

The things you can buy full perm typically have restrictions on how you can sell them. Selling "as is" is always forbidden, you have to add to it in some way - they're components for building and creation, not stand alone items. Some FP creators have a minimum price or restrictions on how their components can be used in promotions and gifts. Too many people giving away or selling similar items for next to nothing undermines the ability of others to sell.

1L1H only makes sense after you've built up a large selection of your own items. Start with that. Franchises may seem like a way to fill up a mall and generate more sales, but they're not. You still have to do all the promotion work, you're constrained in how you can do that, and many shoppers will be turned off when they see yet another franchise. You'll be better off joining with others, where everyone is promoting the area and hopefully bringing in customers who'll look around a bit.

Thank you very much for your opinions. Even some makes me feel little frustrated. Develope builder or designer skills don't happen from night to day, need time, so if apparently market place and stores in world are most of them supported by creators, for good or bad, this means that retailers don't have certainty to open a business here. Perhaps I am reading in the wrong way the suggestions. But now I am concluding:

    1) Be a creator and sell your stuff through market place (first option, following the steps enlisted above) and with a tiny store in world (second option) on your own land.

    2) Don't waste time and money getting vendors and franchises to retail, no matter if it sounds like a good and virtuous way to sell and work as a commercial team to promote others creations.

    Am I right?

    4. Not sure what you mean with 1L1H.

1L1H is a "system"?, hud or whatever to promote commercial stuff in world. Is a way to attract customers to your store offering quick promotions of sutff sell at 1L just during the next hour. In my experience as more or less customer is more attractive than discounts. Discounts are good way to promote and sell stock but this method helps also with traffic almost like happen with gifts, but gifts are sell at 0L, this way the merchant, the creator of 1L1H and customer got a piece of the cake

I think the first and foremost you need to figure out, is what you want to sell.

Thank you very much Lexbot. I think I have detected some needs between avatars and, answering your questions (mine too) I plan:

    1. To find some fullperm stuff that can satisfy such needs to resell, some could be get from gacha. I am thinking also about vendors and/or franchises.
    2. To find a way to resell as outlet some old stuff I have in my inventory that, even I don't use it, I know could be useful for some people instead of just throw it away.
    3. This meanwhile I am learning how to create my self some stuff to satisfy such needs, since I am developing some skills.
    4. Principal objetive, offer to people good quality and cheap stuff, since I also have in mind an specific target. I am interested in understand also how this 1L1H offers work I would like to use it more or less often combined with other kinds of events.

So, in synthesis, my idea is, to develop my business in parallel with my self development and getting enough profit to, at least, make my tier and account self sustentable.

  10. OK... Perfect! Now, about what Chic said:

On 6/29/2019 at 6:08 PM, Chic Aeon said:

Meanwhile, you can certainly RESELL gacha items that you have either purchased or "won" at a gacha event and that might be the easiest start for you.   You can also sell gachas (won or purchased) on the Marketplace.

I am not quite sure about the steps to resell. I reviewed the links I shared, very useful, but maybe I am little dump and need figure the best way and steps, same way, to search in market place stuff to resell. I think I could follow the steps listed by Polenth and also combine with some things to resell from my store. Said that, I have to say that I am looking for male stuff designers (clothes, hairs, body parts, gacha, etc), to include in the stuff possible to resell)

  11. Thank you very much, Polenth. Like Chic's, yours is a very useful comment. So, if I do a list of the "instructions" you are suggesting me I could write the first ones:

    1) Get items on the marketplace to resell  (I guess full perm or at least Copy-modifiable or Mod-Transf ???????, like vendors or packs ?????, gacha ???? )

    2) Set a small shop in my land in parallel to show a more professional look putting the focus in the brand and niche I want as target.

For this two suggestions I found these links I think can be helpful for me and others and I am planning now broadcast too my own experience for latin people. And I know I will get more kind suggestions from the community.

The problem presented for you in regards to EU citizens is that you have established a subsidiary; Tilia Branch UK Ltd, which is established inside the European Union / European Economic Area, and therefore make you 100% required to comply with EU legislation when it comes to privacy, consumer legislation, the GDPR directive and conflict resolution.

As a matter of fact, since you have this subsidiary inside the EU, you HAVE to handle your European Union / European Economic Area customers through this company, in the same manner as i.e. Apple, Microsoft, PayPal HAVE to handle their customer relationships through their European subsidiaries and not the US mother company.

So for European Union / European Economic Area customers you have to present terms of service, requirements for identification, handling of privacy and conflict resolution according the EU law. These will necessarily be different, in the same manner as we see it for the aforementioned companies, from what is presented to the US citizens.

I am of the opinion the terms, as currently presented, does not meet the minimum requirements for a B2C contract based on EU law. It is in your interest to make them meet these requirements, or the minimum requirements will be applied by the courts in Europe and you will lose in conflicts. In a conflict with a European Union / European Economic Area citizen or company, it is the Tilia Branch UK Ltd company that will be taken to court, and EU law will be applied.

Granted some of the entities who will deal with Tilia will be businesses and for them you can present a completely different set of terms and contracts, but the majority of Secondlife customers are consumers (the definition also exist in EU law).

You also have to follow EU tax legislation for these customers, and there is no reason why you should report  European Union / European Economic Area customers being private or businesses to the IRS. It shall be reported to the EU member states in question from your Tilia Branch UK Ltd company.

This is the typical LL method for many years so not a surprise - anyone very old here can nod now. But what about the folks that DON'T read the forums. Forum folks are typically only 10 percent of a community. I have no idea what they are here but there are many more people that never come to the forums than do.  I talked to one VERY PROMINENT creator just now, and old timer who cashes out regularly for years and she didn't get an email. There will likely be oh so many people that find themselves faced with a surprising "sign or move on" pop up when they log in on August 1.   We had NO heads up at all in August of 2013 (and I just realized both are AUGUST months. Hmmm).

And a special thanks to the people here that bothered to read the TOS and the Privacy document. It makes me happy that some took the time. There are at least three lawyers that I know of (not mine)reading now and likely many more that I don't know of. They will probably not agree with each other, they  seldom did in 2013 :D.  But we can each decide for ourselves and map out our plan of action whatever it may be.

Very well thought, Chic. But, perhaps between the preventions, all of us might see what will happen during the next month before react. I believe LL is taking note (we read posts above) of our concerns to take the precise steps before go ahead into a conflictive situation. I want to think that LL will provide us with the best agreement. I agree with you also, folks participating in this forums we are conscient about the tinny letters in the covenants (or no) but since we are discussing this we are alerting the others in the best interest of all. Is a way to stop any "mistake" or abuse.

Payments made with a United States-based payment instrument will be charged by Linden Research, Inc. Payments made with payments instruments based outside of the United States will be charged by Tilia Branch UK Ltd., which is located at 11-12 St. James's Square, Suite 1, 3rd Floor, London, United Kingdom SW1Y 4LB.

Linden Lab may offer you the opportunity (directly or through an applicable Payment Service Provider) to purchase or use virtual credits, points, tokens, services, or items ("Virtual Goods and Services"). There is nothing new in their mailing about Tilia today. Tilia has already been their division handling subscriptions and payments for years.

The LL TOS already talks about tokens, i.e. the Linden dollar and has for years:

The language about inactive accounts and fees is no different than numerous other financial services, starting with banks:

Long ago (14 years ago?) LL declared that all other outside parties selling or buying or converting Linden dollars were invalid and all such agencies, like Anshe Chung or Gaming Open Market ceased to operate because LL wouldn't recognize them. There is nothing new here.

Far from being "terrible" terms, these terms were *necessary* for LL to comply with existing banking and finance laws. They're also not new. It's just that they are presented in a focused and distilled way with the addition of the tax identification or Social Security number.

It strikes me that like other developments of the past, whether the declaration of gambling as illegal when US law changed, or the collection of VAT to stay in compliance with European law, those SL businesses that function like real-life businesses and have real names in particular, and established practices, accounts, etc. will find nothing new in this and nothing onerous. In fact, many people outside the US do have passports, as it is more common for them to have this as a form of identification.  Anyone in any significant business that earns enough to cash out will likely have a RL counterpart.

But very small businesses of the type that are run by anonymous avatars with PayPal accounts that don't clearly hook up to any known business may face difficulties. Yes, it seems that LL will make it harder to cash out. But if you can't provide a real name, government ID, address, and tax ID number to a business providing you a payment, why do you imagine that you can go on existing in the real world?

It's funny when 3000+ complained about doubling of the cashout cost, the forums regulars including some in this thread denounced them as somehow failing to realize that "LL is a business" and "LL isn't a charity" and "LL can't run a unicorn realm". But when people are asked to supply the exact same information you supply in RL to open up a business account even just on PayPal, let alone a real bricks-and-mortar bank (ID, Social Security #, valid address), there is some outrage as if something illegal or horrible has occurred. It hasn't. And any lawyer will explain this to you.

A very good and strong and based comment! To think about seriously, Linden Lab!

  15. One last comment from me doing Ecco to some voices ahead. I believe that Linden Lab and Tila (as subsidiary) not only can but have to cross the information without the signing or intervention of users already registered, since we already signed with the first one the terms and conditions. I understand that legally Tila need the consent with our signing but such "inner crossment" could be just a bureaucratique treatment without further effects. And, by the way, if you visit Tila, there are no way to sign the terms. And, within the SL account, in Credit details, there are not any way to do so either. I guess SL is on the way to add the necessary inside the dashboard to do and clarify all this.

Even if I did make enough to cash out I likely wouldn't unless I was desperate for cash in RL. I'd prefer to put it back into creating and be able to rent a bit of land to build on. Even if I were desperate enough to cash out, it would take too long in an emergency type situation so unlikely to happen anyway.

I agree and I behave such way. I prefer use the cash, when I have it to pay the account or tier fees or reinvest. So, while cash is well administered I don't find a big trouble or pernicious effect with all this about.

Maybe this is meant to easen the transfer of in game currency between SANSAR and SL? It has been announced long ago... you know back when SANSAR was not yet released.

Mmm! I agree... I am thinking we are on the way to experiment the "fussion" of Second Life and Sansar as twin platforms with the same currency: the Sansar Dollar or Token. Could be the end of lindens as custom currency? Or, the financial actual support of lindens will be the basement of Sansar dollar and the reinforcement of the virtual project. Read carefully the Chapter 3 of Tilia's terms and conditions. Is more "easy" to do that as a first step instead and against the technical difficulties to merge both 3D virtual platforms, the more hard challenge.

So really nothing is changing other than if you leave a USD balance on your account you might get charges after 12 months of inactivity and you have to agree to another TOS.

I already talked through live chat asking about and, yes, seem that the most manageable way to don't be affected would be left at 0$ the cash within the account with credit information and normally used to cash. I believe is a good way to put in movement the money along the year as period, instead to be sleeping.

    • Thanks 1
  19. Mmmm....

I guess this measure in the actual terms and conditions will cause a massive emigration instead immigration as if were a reflection of the real politics in USA today.

I see some advantages and also disadvantages:

    1. More control and certainty about avatars (accounts) numbers, kinds, and people behind them. Demographic information is important to support the SL economy just like in RL. Useful for merchants since SL give chance to get some profits for real.
    2. Depuration of accounts. Some, I guess, bots or alts or basic, since are using SL in questionable ways maybe they have transformed themselves in a real trouble related sometimes to unfair play. In this topic, we must be careful about motivations behind people to have and use more than one avatar instead different appearance outfits.
    3. The preceding paragraph points also to a topic not sufficiently discussed: the inheritance or transfer of accounts and avatars among those who have been friends, couples, relatives inside and / or outside of Second Life. Many of these accounts, obtained marginally (I have one), by mutual agreement in the exchange of basic information for the management and administration of the inherited account, with these new measures will put at risk many of them, because Linden Lab has not wanted, could or questioned the reasons that make such a transfer legitimate in certain concrete, real, viable circumstances. Those of us who have an account in similar conditions, unable to verify the original identity despite being managing it honestly and sensibly, enjoying the possibilities that SL gives, we will surely see them lost for our sadness. On the one hand it may be good, the reduction would affect what was said in the first paragraph. On the other hand, it contradicts the spirit that defines SL, philosophically, administratively, legally, and playfully, as a meta-world parallel to real life. It is as much as restricting the freedom of expression through the self-representation of oneself through so many appearances and avatars as is necessary or wanted, although putting certain limits on this would not necessarily be contrary to the proper coexistence between avatars. This issue, if well considered, could be manage in a more constructive way, even technically speaking giving chance to join or merge such accounts in one as if instances (I want remember SL that the SL viewer and third viewers allow log in with more than one instances or accounts within the limits of each one computers).
    4. The current contractual terms and conditions seem more abusive, self-defensive than assertive, supportive and sustainable for both signatory parties. I firmly believe that the contract, before any of us sign it, would have to be subject to serious modifications that consider the different concerns of those who, for now here and now, are setting out our points of view, all of them very worthy, especially in the relative to credit and identification issues.
    5. Whether or not Tilia is a subsidiary of Linden Lab, may or may not be relevant. The truth is that, if it is necessary for Linden Lab to delegate the issues of billing to a third party in discord, it could have relied on the same PayPal that many of us use and whose terms of contract have recently been modified in a less coercive manner, but providing greater certitude to the parties that participate in the exchange of goods and services. Yes, it is possible that the idea of managing Tokens goes hand in hand with what is already managed financially in the world with virtual currencies. The linden is already a virtual currency, of the former, even before the bitcoin and, although in recent times there was a bubble of speculation, we would not have to fear more of the account to an undeniable trend of the future, future in which, since we decided to be in this metaworld, we accepted to behave graciously as part of it.
    6. Finally, I believe that, with this novelty, Linden Lab should also provide certainty about the delimitation of attributions of the third party in discord as well as the effects expected by us users in, for example, the limits on acquisition of lindens, in the transaction and exchange of coins. It is true that the linden-dollar relationship has been determinant to fix the value of the linden in both cryptocurrency or virtual currency, but in today's global economic conditions this has to be different. I have known of many cases of non-US users in which enjoying their SL is an ordeal for not being able to exchange real money for virtual, or for difficulties of inter-bank relations. Many Russians and Chinese and recently Venezuelans have experienced this very often and that Linden Lab is free of political and ideological inclinations. SL is a cultural mosaic whose only borders are the language, the boundaries between regions, the ages, the own skills and capabilities of each one, I hope Tilia does not become the punitive pretext to undermine Second Life with a view to reinforcing Sansar's project even with his head down in its takeoff or worst.

Money Trees were already nearly completely vanished from Second Life when I joined more than 3 years ago. Handing out money for nothing seem to have lost its appeal fast and over the years even camping chairs vanished completely. Both methods had their peaks, when SL had a rather popular phase and when traffic was more important for a region than it is today.

I am very interested in that phrase: "... when SL had a rather popular phase and when trafic was more important for a region than it is today".

Now, 5 years after that quotation, I question which measure is more important for SL and residents today.

As I understood, time ago traffic was a measure comparable with web pages traffic, giving an idea about popularity of a sim, service, commerce or spot, even the use and enjoyment in time of personal houses in the task of build a Second Life living as if real, having a family, connecting almost daily, working, etc.

Time ago, another important measures were the demographics data. But now, nobody can tell with certainty how SL is realy growing and developing in population making difference between kinds of avatars (mesh, basic, bots, alts, furies, human appeal, mixtures, clans), residents and enlight about motives and uses that real people give to SL. Have alts, for example or bots don't have real reason to be seen as a trouble related only to unfair play but in especial circumstances; but now, even the SL rules and politics, and some perceptions of residents have distorted ways and objectives of why stay inside SL, play inside SL, live or even camping to get lindens in SL. That information is a shadow that blind even the efforts of virtual merchants affecting the virtual economy of SL and, I suspect, even the real one and that could explain in part the new changes because SLB16.

I think -and this is a constructive criticism- that meanwhile Linden Lab don't review and redefine all the concepts associated with this ones, SL (including Sansar) would become stocked and residents, new and old, would feel disappointed and migrate to other platforms even non profitable. Sometimes I feel some sutil tension among two extreme points of view from users, those who see SL just as a game against those who, like me, see it with more big and vast possibilities for self personal and group development with all its implications. I remember the time when SL even was an important platform to important firms (banks, fashion designers, transnational enterprises, politics, governments, cultural asociations, universities, etc) hoping use, for example, traffic measure to justify their research, communication and branding efforts.

I love SL and I don't plan lef it until I die, but, this topic is a big concern of mine. As tiny beginner landlord and merchant and creator in one hand I enjoy being around but right now I am not quite sure if traffic is really important information to attract people as tenants, customers or whatever. I think too that this lack of definition and lack of actualization incide on lag made over sims, because visitors and sim owners continue thinking the way before.
