  1. Nice to watch, to fast for me to even attempt to keep up and follow along. Appreciate the hard work though!
  2. Oh, by the way....if you plan to sell your items once you learn how to create them, I suggest you become familar with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).
  3. Once I did a little reading, I had no problem fixing my issue. It works fine on my machine now. The issue that I have is there are few SL related tutorials out there. I like Wings cause it is pretty easy to use and less confusing than others I have tried.
  4. Has been many good posts here with lots of good advice. NCI and Builders Brewery has many classes, all are free to attend. However, Don't Forget to TIP your instructor--most spend countless hours creating classes, compiling FREE materials for their students, and teaching. I an sure none of them get rich off teaching these classes, but do it out of wanting to share with others what they know. Show your appreciation, tip well. Mermaid Diaries is one of my personal favorites since she delves into many many different types of creations in SL. It may be old but will provide you with lots of information http://www.mermaiddiaries.com/2006/11/build.html I am saddened it is no longer kept up to date. Goggling "SL Clothing Tutorials" comes up with tons of urls to research...just have to spend some time following the links to find what you are looking for. Not to mention there are countless tutorials on building, mesh/sculpty making, gimp/photoshop on Youtube.com http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Clothing_Tutorials http://www.squidoo.com/secondlifeclothingtutorials Above all else, prepare yourself for a vast and complex learning experience....learning one thing often sending you off searching in another direction. I have been in SL a long time and learn something new everyday. Good Luck, but most of all, enjoy your SL.
  5. *screams and faints* Thank you one an all...first script works and what I need...too late to try to wrap my brain around the 2nd one....will need to do that in in the morning just because I need to try...to wrap my head around changing it. Maybe learn something in the process. There are just some things that do not compute like scripts and making sculpties in my little brain. Again, my thanks!
  6. I am not a scripter...I scream and faint at the sight of the alien language...I am looking for a simple script I can add to an object to let others know certain persons are online....like Green they are on....Red they aren't. I need this for RP Sim Administrators so folks can know who is around. There is one on the LSL Wiki ((http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Online_Indicator)) but I don't want it to do all that....I just want one that shows if they are on or offline. I couldn't find anything that simple at marketplace. Any other suggestions where to look?
  7. I think you use to be able to use Second Inventory to save your textures to a hard drive...not sure that is available anymore. You had to be careful they were your creations; I don't think it sorted by creator. The last time I tried to use SI like 2-3 years ago, it was very tedious and cumbersome. Better than one at a time but very slow. I think I trashed it over the years.
  8. You may not have the right plug in. When I first tried, mine didn't work either. Check out the Pounceworks blog conversation http://pkpounceworks.com/2010/08/01/wings-3d-plugin-files/. I run a Mac so had problems, towards the end of the blog is a different URL http://www.oortman3d.com/wings3d.html. This site has a download that helped fix my issue might help with yours as well.
  9. Honestly, I don't understand the entire drama other than a new person's expectations not being met, people offering advice from their own personal experiences trying to answer her question, being embarrassed at pixelated nakedness, then having a melt down when others did what she asked them to do. Boy, did I get sucked in....it is just like watching TV...sucked in till the end...LOL.
  10. The more I read about mesh and people's experiences the more I will wait. To me, if I have to change my shape to meet the concept of a designer's mesh clothes (no insult to Rebel or any other designers), then I won't be buying mesh clothes regardless who the maker is. I will stick with my flexi skirts dropping into my body and whatever I sit/lay on. In my vanity, I like my shape and my looks....it has taken me years to perfect the way I look...I am satisfied. If I have to constantly change my shape to fit into clothes that is the concept of someone else, then I am no longer me but what someone else wishes me to be. No, thanks! I think in time, all this will be sorted out but until it does, I will invest my LLs in non mesh items that will fit. I do wish good luck to all you beta designers and clothes testers during this sorting out period.
  11. They would probably be very very happy they got something for their money, but have no clue what it was they received at that point. Would they stay after getting it? Probably so, there are achievable goals to reach; SL has no preset achieveable goals so to speak. Not to mention, after the initial 7 day "free" period, it cost 14.95 (or there abouts) to maintain an account. Everything else in that world is based on gold you make from quests or on items you gather or make through professions you train for by purchase. Unlike SL choices are limited. Nothing in WOW is free, you pay for it either via your monthly subscription fee and your hard work of questing/selling stuff. Even in WOW if you sell items at their Auction House, the house requires a deposit fee and takes a cut of the gold received on items sold. I think someone made the suggestion earlier, take the Freebies off the Marketplace; however, have an in-world sim where they can be freely distributed to new players with AV less than 30 days old. 30 Days is long enough to decide if you wish to stay in SL. Also, I think we need to go back to the old naming system. I think the "resident" names are just to confusing for folks. Freebies items could be made no copy, no modify, no transfer for demo purposes and name recognition. Make the place a teaching area about shopping, the economy, what the marketplace is. Folks can operate on items for 60-90 days on demo versions to see what the world is like before they invest their money. But, as some point, all those freebie accounts need to render into paying accounts...either they need to invest in buying items to make the world sustainable or they need to pay a monthly membership fee. I think that if land and tier prices were more reasonable where everyone could purchase a sim for 100.00 USD or less and pay no more than 50.00 a month tier you would see a return of folks from other fledgling worlds like SL. The problem is though, SL has always been billed as a Free Online World to play in, changing it now I think would be detrimental. SL needs to reimplement an Orientation Island where there are real helpers 24/7 to assist people with questions.
  12. Okay, being an old out of touch foggy here that despises V2, what is the difference between www.secondlife.com and my.secondlife.com? Can you access the "my.secondlife.com" via the old website?
  13. I have to agree with you there is nothing wrong with being "frank" but "frankness" can be couched in terms of tact and politeness. I agree with many of the suggestions by the OP, but the more I read the more my own pet peeve kicked. I think I read maybe a 1/4 of the post before I got annoyed at what I found arrogant and judgemental and dismissed the rest of it as pettiness. I could have probably learned something if it had been said in more diplomatic and helpful terms. I am glad there was a later clarification and apology. Me, I am an imperfect builder learning all the time. I make mistakes and sometimes make them on purpose. I have probably made every mistake on that list despite going to many classes and experimentation. Some of what was written by the OP is not always taught in classes or even found by trial and error. There is a very steep learning curve in SL and a lot of knowledge is required to achieve even near perfection. My solution is if you don't like what I build and think it crap, don't look at it, buy it or use it. I build for me and my tastes of perfection at the time...no one else's. I think I would like to challenge the OP to join the ranks of academia and teach others how to build better. Or, maybe write up a "How To...." or, "What Not to do..." and offer it new builders.
  14. I don't understand why it wouldn't be easy to roll out larger prims first? Wouldn't this actually be two separate projects since prim size would really have nothing to do with mesh, albeit mesh would require the larger prims? I know other worlds similar to SL have not had the 10 x 10 x 10 m prim size limit for several years and last I checked many didn't even make use of sculpt maps. I wouldn't think prim size roll out would be dependent on mesh. If anything, larger prim size roll out would prepare the way for mesh. Mesh means nothing to me at this point other than it sounds like it will cost me more money if I wish to buy or use anything mesh related but being able to use the larger size prims does concern me. They will (or should) have more flexibility than megprims and help make my creations less primmy. More than likely since I can't make sculpts nor these meshes, I will become yet another Mom & Pop builder causalty.
  15. Congrats! Welcome to the wonderful world of building in SL. 1) If that is your first build, you did a nice job of it. It took me months when I first started building to create something like that. I think I spent my time making fountains and step staircases getting use to the tools and figuring out how to texture. 2) What to texture it with is up to you. Many places in world offer classes on building and texturing.Try doing a search in-world under events then refining to education. I would suggest taking a few of those. Also, check out the various wikis available...googling SL Texturing or some derivative should bring up useful information for you. 3) Would I buy this? Not to discourage you, but no, I personally wouldn't buy this. I have no need for it. I can make it myself as can many other beginning builders. If you put it inside of a nicely built house or building textured well,as previously suggested, I might consider it. It has nothing to do with your work it is more to do with 1) I don't like the looks of that type of staircase and wouldn't buy from anyone; 2) I would use something less primmy like a sculpty staircase; 3) I can make it myself. I buy products that I can't make myself like sculpt maps, meshes, animations, poses, or scripts to enhance what I build. I think you have a good start and encourage you to continue. I find building in SL a nice creative outlet for me, albeit it can be quite expensive.
  16. I use Photoshop so GIMP may have something similar. I have not read the posted tutorial so this may or may not work for you. I AM NOT a graphics artist but a fledgling in photoshop, but in PS you can create what is called a Group. It is like subfolder where you can move 1 or more layers into that folder. You can turn off all the layers in that folder group with one click. Depending on how the layers are laid out, it would make sense to divide up into group folders.. Or, you could move all your layers into a single folder except the one you want to work on.
  17. Who says you have to do anything with it? I own a sim and have for several years. I currently have my work shop there, my home, and several themed RP areas at different heights. I change the whole thing periodically because I can. You don't have to do anything you don't want to do with it. Just relax, tour around SL, and something will come to you.
  18. I did a search on the forums and didn't find anything. Not sure if I should post this message here or the mesh forums so giving this a whirl. Is anyone using Sculptris from Pixologic (makers of ZBrush)? or know anything about it?
  19. I want to say that I admire your style and your integrity for taking it upon yourself to do this for your customers. I have been in Old School Customer Service for many many years and find it refreshing there are others still out there that will go the extra mile for their customers. The attitude of most Customer Services today (tries to not look at the Lindens as she says this) is serve the masses not the individual customer. It's all about how many tickets you can get through a day rather than how many issues you can resolve positively for your customers. Make it as hard as you can to be contacted about issues. Take days or weeks to respond with non sensical information so the customer has to refile a ticket. Argue with the customer. Frustrate the Customer so they don't want to do business with you anymore. Give the least possible you can and call it good. I find it refreshing to hear you are taking care of your customers and setting an example for others. I guarantee you that the next time those customers want a similar product they will make an effort to do business with you. Not only that, they will tell their friends, who in turn will tell their friends.... Keep up the good work!
  20. First off, how do you know it is stolen? If your "friend" is selling a piece of digital artwork rather than tangible physical goods, HOW DO YOU KNOW the person selling an item in SL did not purchase said rights to use the art? SL names do not necessarily match up with account names in other venues such as deviant art, DAZ, or renderosity, etc. Uuumm...has your friend even attempted to contact the merchant regarding this issue, or are you just complaining to garner attention for your "friend's artwork" in another venue? Why didn't your "friend" come to this forum to take up the cause themselves? Oftentimes those new to SL have NO CLUE when it comes to creating and selling their items. They see creation as a part of the SL package...get excited at creating without knowing there can be legal RL ramifications. Could it be a new SL creator that is unaware about copyright infringement or DMCAs and a simple friendly educational conversation be had with the person being accused to rectify the issue? I know when I started creating in SL I had NO CLUE about such things..but I do now. I have no clue what the items that are being sold by either party, but I do know that the teen and adult grids have merged so there is a distinct possiblity the creater may truly be unaware. Why not give the benefit of the doubt and take a sensible courteous approach and speak to the person before yelling "I have been robbed...I have robbed" Nothing ventured nothing gained. I suppose your "friend" would rather take the expensive legal route. It bothers me when someone creates an account to come in and accuse people of copyright infringement and apparently not know the first thing about how to deal with said infringement rights other than threaten. Along with that, coming into a forum and not obeying the forum rules. I hope your "friend" gets this resolved and you both go back to your other worlds happy and content.
  21. Has to agree with the other poster, it is either some quirky SL bug or you have some sort of script (i.e. doors, windows, furniture, etc.) a texture, possibly an animation or sound included which is creating a perms issue. My bet is on the latter. Look at all scripts and textures (those are usually the top culprits) and modify the permissions according to the licensing agreement you have with creator of items you purchased and/or did not create yourself. You may have to unlink the prim and relink it
  22. Thank you, Void. Not tried a script to do linking, didn't know it existed...of course me being rather clueless most of the time doesn't help either. Will try it over the weekend. Yay, bigger prims...but not sure I am up for meshes though. As posted in another thread this morning, I feel somehow that meshes will be the death of me and many other small creators that don't know how to make sculpts or meshes and prefer to purchase from those that do create. I see this becoming a much more expensive venture I can barely afford now. Again, thanks for the infor and will try it on a build later.
  23. I am not a techie, don't know other game engines or software so what is on my wish list will be very primative at best. I can't give you the correct tech/industry speak either...so bear with me. If nothing else, I would like to have the ability to hollow on a prim at an area I choose not the center. Multiple hollow points would be helpful as well. The ability to bend..not twist....not torturing he prim but actually bending certain points on the prim...maybe the points they use in flexies that create softness. Ability to place cuts at different areas of a prim. I would like to see the 10x10x10 sqm max (.010 x .010 x .010 min) be changed to a minimum of 50x50x50. Would like to see more of the built in prim choices be allowed to be flexible. Also, more attachment points on the AVs would be a huge boon for all of us. Would like to see prim drift be a thing of the past and allow for precise alignment in objects. Like to see the link distance enlarged from what it is now (?40x40x40???) Expand, the amount of prims you can link from current. to a much larger number...would allow us to get rid of build rezzers for alot of large or primmy builds. A way to link phantom objects to non-phantom without using scripts to keep build from being phantom.
  24. Do you have a link for primstar? I run a Mac so not sure if that would be an impedience or not. I think if I had something similar to SL primative tools...something I know how to use and am familiar with...I might be able to understand what I am doing then transition to blender.
  25. Thank you everyone for providing useful explanations and offered links. The information was very helpful. It sounds to me if mesh can do all this whizz bang stuff, there will be no need for prim builders/sculpty users like myself. I have never created and sold what I do to make a profit...what little I sell doesn't even cover the costs of materials I spend with other merchants let alone even touch my tier cost. I enjoy creating things from what many call primative tools....too bad the 3-d modelings programs don't offer a basic primative mode modeled on how it is done in SL....that I know how to do ...LOL. Being able to create was a draw to come to SL and spend money. Really, what is left to draw people into SL or retain them once teh shiny has worn off? I understand the need for enhancements and improvements, but with every change it effects everyone to some degree. I think many small mom and pop creators could vanish because the market place will become so complex we can't keep up. Most of us do not have the resources or skills to create mesh. It sounds like the creativeness in SL may slide further and will fall to a select few like it did in the past with the land barons (mesh barons?) This could be yet another blow to SL's ecomony. *wonders how many more blows to the economy there will be before SL folds*.
