  1. Criticising someone for continuing an existing thread, thus preserving context, rather than starting a new one, is poor form. This is an asynchronous medium. Delayed responses are to be expected.
  2. Curious how you figure a BIOS password is going to help. That only protects against physical access, but even then, if they have physical access, they can probably pop a cover and reset that with the jumpers anyway.
  3. Don't download every last piece of garbage off the internet and don't constantly log in as administrator or a user that has administrator access. These two things do the most to make your system ripe for malware such as keyloggers.
  4. Even most computers will struggle. Pretty much need something in the engineering or gaming categories running an operating system with decent OpenGL support. A less ideal low-midrange system running Windows is popular, but won't provide the best support or experience.
  5. ~/.secondlife/<login name>/* on MacOS and Linux. If you're on Windows, god help you.
  6. That was actually information that would have made more sense up front. Yeah, HIPAA rules will make that a tricky run...is there an HTTP proxy there? If so, you might be able to use some iptables-fu to squirt packets through the firewall, since not a whole lot other than positioning information goes over UDP. Assets and textures go over HTTP these days, just not on 80 or 443 for the most part.
  7. No, we won't help you violate your company's IT policy or crack your company's firewall. You're on your own. Perhaps you should be working when you're punched in?
  8. Sadly, nothing official as far as I'm aware. And quite a bit inauthentic, stereotypical crap, much of which borders on offensive. Kind of curious what happened to Nany Kayo, since she was getting money from our tribe to maintain the Virtual Native Lands, which went offline about two months ago without fanfare.
  9. Read up on asking questions the smart way, Eric S Raymond has an excellent and quick read on the subject and Google can lead you to it. You could have avoided the whole situation and received your answer faster. Also, if you aren't being a dick, sometimes support staff will go the extra mile, particularly if they're not handling very many other chats simultaneously.
  10. Since you're being nasty: RTFM, search for fallback mode. Unless your distribution seriously modded things, it'll have the same UX as GNOME 2.x. Debian doesn't do such customization. Though even without fallback mode, Debian doesn't use Unity, it uses GNOME Shell, which isn't bad, though may be a bit of a GPU pig if you're trying to run SL on an underpowered machine while using it. As for stats, try googling for the linux counter. I only do homework for people who can't be bothered if they're at least basically polite.
  11. Says you. Adoption numbers say otherwise. Look, you have the code, you can fix it. If not, well, go back under your bridge.
  12. You're reading too much into the situation, since the GNOME foundation isn't obligated to accept their submissions, either. And GNOME 3 really isn't as bad as you're making it out to be. Legacy mode works fine if you don't want all the GPU-intensive eyecandy.
  13. Oh, and furthermore, GNOME, regardless of version, isn't a Red Hat product. It's a cooperative open source project of The GNOME Foundation. If you don't like it, check out the code, make your mod, submit it to the community. Or fork it in your own direction.
  14. Except that isn't the case. Microsoft and Red Hat have an agreement to not sue each other over patents, since both provide virtualization software and both have a vested interest to make sure their software virtualizes nicely with the other's platforms. There's no money or stock options involved in the deal. They're both wholly independent of each other. It'd be like claiming that Intel owns Apple or vice versa because USB was co-developed by the two companies back in the 90s.
  15. Someone better tell NASA they've been running Red Hat instead of Debian, pretty sure that'd be news to them.
  16. They use Debian, and the current stable uses Gnome 3. Debian's Gnome 3 works just fine and is plenty stable. It's not Gnome's fault Ubuntu and Red Hat don't care about reliability.
  17. It'd make more sense if 64-bit windows actually had proper 64-bit support to start with. Or was entirely 64-bit itself. But it's not. If you want 64-bit environments, you want anything but Windows still. Given how long it took Microsoft to drop or rewrite 8-bit and 16-bit components, I'd expect Windows to have wholly made the transition sometime in the mid 2040's.
  18. Mute/Block and Report Abuse are your friends.
  19. It's available in Singularity and a couple other viewers, but it seems petty and stupid. If they're dumb enough to not know when they're annoying other people, they're dumb enough to suck static until they get the point.
  20. Emerald was malware, though. Go read the history. Keep in mind that this is all open source, so if the viewer doesn't do what you want, it's your fault for not providing the code to make it do that.
  21. Do you have any debugging output from your viewer or your sim to corroborate this, or is this just speculative paranoia?
  22. Unless something's changed, someone you block can still see your profile.

    avatar help?

Facelights are definitely not the answer. Unless you like being the Human Torch.
