  1. If JIRA is the best I'd hate to see the worst. It was obviously written by software engineers for software engineers with a UI only a software engineer could love. I despise reporting bugs on it and have only done so a few times. It's flat out not designed well for non-tech savy people to use.
  2. You're going to need some streaming software. I use MIXXX which is available on Windows, Mac, and Linux and is open source and free. It is sort of like a light version of Virtual DJ and does everything I need it to reliably. Setting it up has a few weirdnesses that can be frustrating if you aren't ready for them. The first is you have to download and install the LAME library separately (this enables MP3 encoding) due to licensing issues. The second is you have to assign a sound device to the master output. The program won't start without this. This would be the pre-encoded monitor output. I prefer to monitor what's actually playing inworld so I just assigned this to an unused SPIDF output and it was happy with that. Next, you'll need a streaming server to use. Some clubs may have them available, if you have friends who DJ, they might be willing to let you use theirs as long as they don't have a gig at the same time. Ultimately, you're going to want to rent your own. I use I-Shout which costs 125L/week. You should make enough in tips your first time or two to pay for a month and it will open up a lot more possible venues. A lot of places won't take you seriously if you don't have your own stream server. A decent headset is the minimum to DJ. You can get fancier with separate headphones and a higher quality mic. A relatively quiet room is also necessary. You don't want a fan or air conditioner blowing right at you or an open window with traffic, train, or aircraft sounds regularly being audible. Oh and be prepared to actually talk on the mic. This can be uncomfortable at first. You don't have to talk for 5 minutes between songs and don't talk over every song. You do want people to know there's a live person and not just an automated playlist running. Music you say you have. Hopefully it's in MP3 format as that's the easiest to deal with. Be aware that playing music for an audience and getting tips or even paid by the club is actually not legal for 99.9% of the DJ's in SL. Unless you are paying ASCAP and BMI license fees and sticking to their catalogs you are breaking the law. It makes zero difference if you paid I-tunes for a song. Tthat doesn't buy the right to play it for an audience. As far as I know, nobody has gotten in any trouble over this because the actual amount of money is so low that it's not worth the RIAA's time to pursue it. Thus, if you're going to do it, zipping over to Youtube to grab a requested song you don't already have isn't any more illegal than playing one you paid for. Finally, the bottom line. At a decent club, you should earn between 1000-3000 in tips for a two hour session. Do not count on the club paying you. That is relatively uncommon. Some may even take a percentage of your tips. 10% is fair. You'll need to to a bit of searching to find good places to play, especially at first. Look for larger established clubs that do tryouts. You may not get hired, but at least you have a chance at some tips to pay for things like a stream server and a few decent tip jars. Do your best and if you get hired, be reliable and be willing to fill-in for those who aren't. You'll earn a reputation and will eventually get other gigs because of it. One big trap to avoid runs as follows "Hey my friend is opening a new club and is looking for DJ's. I'm sure they'd hire you." That new club is likely to be horribly set up and opening night it'll have 6 people including the friend to told you about it, the owner, their host, and maybe a couple friends who they guilted into showing up. My standard answer is "I'd be glad to provided they give me a 1200L guarantee offset by any tips." In other words if they actually pack the place and I get 1200 or more in tips from their guests, they owe me nothing, if it's the first scenario, they pay any difference to make sure I leave with 1200L. I have yet to have one of these actually accept those terms and I'm happy to avoid playing for the crickets. In EVERY case where this happened, the club was gone within a month. I hope this helps.
  3. If you have 3D modelling skills or can code in LSL and do scripting, you can likely make some decent money. The same if you can sing decently, you can do live shows and charge a fair amount for doing it. Otherwise it's mostly not going to pay as well as almost any RL job. I DJ and make enough to cover my inworld expenses without having to buy L$. Even if I could get a gig every day it wouldn't be enough to live on. To put a number on it, on a very good day I might bring in 2000-3000L for a 2 hour set. They aren't all good days though and often it's closer to 1000L. or about $2/hour real money. I mostly do it for fun though since the place I DJ at are places I know most of the regulars and get to chat with them and joke around on the mic. I certainly don't make enough that it would be worth doing if I didn't have fun with it.
  4. I just use a decent headset. I also don't get on the mic a huge amount. People are there to hear music, be able to make live requests, and chat with their friends, not listen to me blather on. I also don't have a trained 'radio voice' so it really isn't that big a deal. You could do worse than one from Shure or similar. The stand or boom you use to hold it is just as important as the mic itself. Bear in mind that the average SL user is probably not going to be listening on particularly good speakers or headsets so there's no real reason to go nuts with this.
  5. The idea is you can set your threshold to a level where you still get good graphics performance. For example, with my system, around 180k is about the point at which my frame rate starts going down when AV's above that come into view so that's where I keep mine set. Around 80-90% of AV's render just fine. The advantage is I can have more non-imposter AV's because the really slow rendering ones aren't causing lag for me. The next release of Firestorm will have this same feature. Once that comes out, I expect there will be an adjustment period with some drama as people realize that amazingly detailed outfit they got from some well known designer is so complex to render that most people aren't seeing it at all. We aren't talking the ones just a little higher than that. I've run into people above 500k. It's like, sorry, you get to be a jellydoll to me and likely most everyone else.
  6. First off, give them another week. Second, never pay in full up front for stuff like this. Third, no payment on file is a major red flag for anyone who sells anything in SL. Finally, you are kind of creepy and stalkerish as far as trying to track him as you have. Just saying.
  7. I've been asked several times to DJ at new clubs. My offer is always the same. Guarantee me 1000L offest by any tips. If I get 500 in tips, you only have to pay the 500L difference. If I make 1000 or more in tips, you owe me nothing extra. I think that's perfectly fair for a non-established club. I ask far more for a private event (especially if the ones hiring me don't want me to have a tip jar out.) Not one new club owner has accepted those terms and not one of the clubs in question lasted more than 3 months.
  8. If you want one that's really simple to fly requiring little skill to actually fly for sightseeing and such. One from Spijkers and Wingtips would be a good choice. There are several models and all fly pretty much the same. There's even a free MD-500 which you can usually get by joining the group and checking notices. This is a really nicely done helicopter with a lot of accessories available for it. If you want one that handles and flies as close to the real thing as you're going to likely get in SL. Then the Brantly B2B from Shergood Aviation is the one you'll want to check out. Plan on hours of practice to learn to fly it. It's not easy, but it's fun. I wouldn't suggest one of these for your first SL copter unless you have some experience with other helicopter flight sims. In between those extremes are the ones from Animate Works. They take a little practice as you have to adjust the collective when you adjust the cyclic to maintain the same altitude just as in a real helicopter, but they aren't nearly as sensative as the Brantly. In the same general difficulty level are ones by Amok. There are several combat helicopters as well as some Russian General Aviation helicopters that are interesting to fly. There are others, but probably one of those will get you started with something decent.
  9. Unless they are using a tool that is probably against the TOS, there is no way they should be able to tell which accounts are on which IP. The long gone Redzone took advantage of people who left their media autoplay settings on, but otherwise if you created an alt and had that off, there'd be no way to tell which IP it was attached to. LL provides no way to bad by IP for estate owners so it's likely they checked groups and such to see who was likely associated with you and banned them manually. That's sort of a jerk move, but as the owner/renter of the parcel or sim, they can boot or ban anyone for pretty much any reason or no reason at all and not violate the TOS. The vehicle history display was pretty neat by the way.
  10. I use the display name unless it uses a bunch of those damn unicode characters in which case I choose either a reasoble approximation of the giberish characters or just use the user name.
  11. And to add to what others have said, if there is a violation of copyright going on, only the actual holder of the copyright can take steps to remedy it. LL won't listen to third party complaints on that.
  12. Pretty much this. I don't worry about it and I go through my contacts occasionally and remove those I haven't had any contact with. I memory for names is poor so if I don't have contact with somebody for a while I'll forget why they are even on the list. I consider it a contact list, not a friends list and having it a manageable size makes it far more useful to me as such. I can always re-add them if they resume regular contact. The quickest way to ensure you never get on it again is to make a big deal about being removed.
  13. Basically the SL TOS is in effect no matter what rules you set for your sim. You can not reverse or otherwise alter them. Those are also the only ones LL will even consider enforcing themselves. and they can do so regardless of any rules or disclamiers you have in your sim rules. They will not enforce further rules that sim owners set themselves. You as a parcel or sim owner are free to set further rules that you and your sim staff (if any) are responsible to enforce. Those can be as arbitrary as you wish to make them. Any warning/ban/appeals process you set is entirely up to you to follow (or not) at your whim.
  14. Anything over 20 is fairly decent and over 30 is full video quality. The absolute max framerate that the SL servers will send is 45. There is literally no difference in the view of somebody getting 45 FPS and somebody getting 95FPS in SL. If you are seeing anything above that it means your video card is just duplicating frames waiting for data for a new one and you can safely turn up some settings.
  15. Check the URL in the sound tab for the parcel and put that in your web browser. it will generally take you to a page where you can check song history among other things. It's also the URL to plug into somethiing like VLC to listen to the stream if SL is having issues
  16. They've actually been against the rules for a long time. LL may be cracking down a little with the new skill gaming thing coming online. I know it kinda sucks when that's how you were earning a few extra L's but thats how things go. I'd suggest learning to DJ. it's not that hard and is fun. Plus then you never have reason to complain that the music sucks ;-)
  17. Well, first off, thanks for being honest. There are a LOT of teens now and before the merge who weren't and for the most part they don't have to put up with the things you are which is not fair, but that's sometimes how life is. Part of the problem is that LL totally dropped the ball in every way when they did the merge. I think there are things they could have done leading up to that and in the implementation of it that would have helped make things a bit more welcoming. As it was, a lot of the existing adult residents felt like LL had taken their time and money and then radically switched the rules midstream and of course since LL wasn't listening, you and the other teens caught the brunt of the resentment over that and still are. Once again, not really fair, but it's how things are. Just as unfair was LL merging the grids and then effectively offering no support or help specific to the teens who came in. Your post makes that pretty clear. You shouldn't have to stay on the Welcome Islands and such to find safe places to interact with others. LL has made no effort to make such areas easier to find out about though. There are some family friendly city/town areas that are G rated as well as some other groups that I'm aware of. I actually help manage a group of sims that are G rated that are mostly for those RPing certain popular cartoon ponies. I don't want to give specific names here but if you IM me I can give you LMs to the places I know.
  18. Go with Nvidia for SL. The Nvidia OpenGL performance is defintely better. I presume you have other games you play because a 970 is kinda overkill for SL. Currently the viewer won't actually use more than 512 meg of texture ram and the 970 has 4gig if I'm not mistaken. One possibly alternative would be to go for a slightly less cutting edge graphic card and an SSD if your system isn't currently using one.
  19. Your current graphic card ought to be ok for SL. I'm thinking the issue may be the speed of your drive or maybe even the IO speed your motherboard can provide. When was the last time you did a wipe and clean re-install of the OS. As big a pain as that may be, it will take the registry back to a fresh state. If you're going to do that, you might as well invest in an SSD. Even a 128gig will hold the OS and a few of your more used software and a 256gig should be ample for anything you'd actually need on the fast drive. It's easy enough to re-direct saves and all the standard directories to a standard drive on the same system. Hopefully that would bring the performance to the point where you could get some more use out of the current rig. Obviously the longer you can put off a new system, the more you'll get for your money when you do get one. That said, five years is a pretty good run for a computer. If you can afford a new system, you'll almost certainly see better IO speeds. Make sure you get whatever memory you install in paired modules. Two four gig modles is better than one 8 for instance. And don't even consider building a new system without an SSD. The boot speed and OS performance increase just from that is amazing. Software like Second Life that depends on disk cache majorly benefit from one as well.

This is a recent problem that I have run into. I'm totally against allowing merchants to remove negative (1 or 2 star reviews). It would totally negate any validity to reviews. I do think they should be able to leave comments when they make an update since then the date would show when the update was made. Deleting or editing a review should be soley at the option of the reviewer. Just this week I had a merchant who got a negative review from me send me a substantially updated and improved version of the item. I went in and deleted the negative review pending trying out the update. I really wish it were possible to leave a review for a product even if one bought it inworld. There are several I'd have given a good review to if I could have and a very few that would have gotten negative ones. Keep in mind that a product has to be pretty bad for me to give a bad review. Also, I don't consider 3 stars to be negative though many sellers would.
  21. Yes, the Virtual LM thing would be nice, but barring that, it ought to be possible for that location field to get the SLURL from a specific notecard inworld, especially if the proposed updates to the MP happen. That said, it still doesn't take that much time overall to update one's listings. Sure for a store with several hundred items, but in most cases we're talking fewer than 30. In 99% of the cases where this happens, the seller has the same out of date LM in their picks as well, you can't tell me that isn't pure lazyness and apathy.
  22. There is something that will almost certainly cost you a sale. If I click the 'See Item' link, get the SLURL and it turns out to lead to an empty rental sim or worse a no longer existing location. That tells me you don't care enough about your customers to keep this updated or remove the link if needed. The other thing that might well also cost a sale is if your See Item link just takes me to your inworld vendor. See Item should be just that. I want to see a rezzed version of that item at the very least. A demo of said item is even better. I don't want to have to wander all over a 10 story store looking for it either. Lose the landing point and use accurate links or use a demo rezzer near the landing point. If you can't do these things, don't put the link in your listing.
  23. I will leave reviews. Generally not immediately since I prefer to have spend a reasonable time with an item before reviewing it. When I do I try to be fair and even in a very positive review I will list even minor cons that I found since those might not be considered minor to somebody else. Likewise, even in a negative review, I try to list the positive things about the item if there are some. If it's something that can maybe be fixed, I try to contact the maker first. I've actually had creators fix issues and send an update when they found out about them. Obviously that tends to turn what might have been a negative review into a possitive one. I consider a review a benefit to potential customers and not to the seller. I've had a couple sellers who didn't get 4 or 5 stars from me offer to refund my purchase in return for deleting the review. I've reluctantly agreed to do so in these cases to avoid drama, but I also never purchase anything else from them.
  24. Sassy Romano wrote: Crim Mip wrote: The data has to get to your viewer so it can get sent to your graphic card to be rendered. If your connection is spotty, it doesn't matter what card you have. Nope, the card continues to render frames regardless of waiting on data to arrive. Think about it, if I lose connection, what you've just said would mean that I get 0 FPS, which clearly isn't the case. If anything, FPS will be inversely proportional to the connection speed. If I tp to a location and no textures of object data has been downloaded, the render is very simple, high FPS.. As more data is presented to the graphics card, then the load increases and FPS will drop. The graphics card will simply render the data that it has at the time that it has it and depending on complexity, will do it resulting in a particular FPS. The overall scene may appear sooner because of the rate at which data is downloaded over a faster connection but the rate at which that is displayed in FPS terms is NOT a function of the connection speed. It can only render data is has available. Since SL is mostly user created content, there's a very small amount it keeps at any given time in cache. It's not like say World of Warcraft where every bit of the graphics in the game are actually stored locally. Turn off your connection and you very quickly crash the viewer. What FPS you get during that time is rendering more and more out of date cache information (which as I said is only covering a very small area) Try going anywhere when not connected and you get nothing. You in fact can't tp someplace else without being connected. You obviously have a poor grasp of how SL works.
