you are right Frankie that there is no category for 3rd party services. As you are asking a question (that has some relevance to SL) then I think the place to ask would be in Answers \ Everything Else

It is a website for a server that is located in SL. So I think it does have some relevance to SL.

  2. I'm trying to set up an ad server. And I want to set up a website, for the ad server to communicate to. The server will be showing a different ad every 30 seconds, and repeat every 60 minutes. I signed up at heroku.  After signing up, I went to my page. The page says create a new app. I don't want to create an app, I want to build a web page. I set the language as PHP. Another thing. It says I have 512 MB of RAM. But I don't know how much bandwidth I get.  I got the free version. But I don't know if that would be enough. Another place I signed up was 000webhost. They offer 10 GB of bandwidth.  I'm not sure yet which one offers a better deal. I have somebody else making the server. He will tell me what to type. I need to know what to click on.

The ads will be on the server, not on the website. The ads will be for stores, and clubs in SL.

So if anybody on here uses heroku, 000webhost, or another hosting website for in world servers, let me know. I also have a Wix.com account. I signed up to about three websites last week. Wasn't sure which one was the best. I did set up an account on Wordpress a couple of years ago. But that was for links to some comic strips.  So I have set up websites before, but nothing like this.

Now a question to LL. In the creators forum, why is there no place for websites? Lots of servers in SL, need a website in order to work.

  3. Here is what I would do.

    1. Locate the servers in the Cayman Islands, and the HQ in Bermuda. Next bring back gambling. With the servers in the Cayman Islands, and HQ in Bermuda, they don't need to obey gambling laws. May have to accept some other payment. Such as Bitcoin.

    2. If the above is not possible, then shut down the Lindex. Let third parties buy, and sell the L$. They can sell it on ebay, or exchange the L$ for another online world's currency. After shutting down the Lindex, bring back gambling. Tell the government that the L$ is not worth anything. Say they are like bottle caps.

LL should look at both options. And see which one is feasible.

Why not start small, and create a decent video ad. That would be their best bet. It would probably cost less, to make the commercial, than it would be to create a movie.

I don't think that LL should make the movie. I would suggest something like product placement. In the movie You've Got Mail, you see AOL on the computer screen. AOL became well known because of that. The movie came out in 1998. It was made in 1997. Most people didn't go on the internet then. I didn't get the internet until May 1999.  Somebody reading this, might know a Hollywood writer. They could contact the writer, and suggest the story.

You've pretty much described a movie that is already done like that. "Ready Player One". So, your movie idea needs to be different than what you described.

I looked the movie up on wikiepedia. That movie is not like the one I described.  This would be a romantic comedy, starring younger actors. The movie should show different parts of SL. Such as marinas, malls, beaches, islands, and mountains. It might show clubs, but not concentrate on clubs.

  7. Let me tell you guys about two companies. One was Marx Toys, and the other one is Mattel. Back in the early 60s, Marx Toys made about $50 million a year. Mattel made about $12 million a year. In 1978, Marx Toys went out of business. While Marx Toys made more money than Mattel, Mattel used a larger part of its budget for advertising. Marx Toys did advertise, but not to the extent as Mattel. Today, Mattel is a large company. SL has been around for 16 years, but few people have heard of SL. Everybody has heard of Facebook, or Twitter. They are always in the news. So, LL needs to find ways to advertise, and get the company in the news. They should also try to get SL in movies. Here is a movie idea.

A man, and woman hate each other in RL. But they meet up in SL, and fall in love. We need younger actors to play the couple. So Tom Hanks, and Meg Ryan are out. Need somebody in their 30s. The movie would need a good title. During the movie, scenes would be filmed in SL. I suggest showing marinas in SL. Boat racing in SL. And pirate battles in SL. Other battles would also be shown, along with the inside of clubs.

Welcome to Second Life. lol. I've been in it for 12 years and I found out about it when they happen to show it on the news and my boss at work at the time told me about it too. I made an account, and been here ever since. I even owned a club...was one of the longest running clubs near the beginning and was open for 6.5 years. I agree, SL does need to do more advertising....advertising is a BIG KEY to getting the word out there. HUGE!!!!

LL needs to advertise on radio, and on TV. I have seen some ads on the internet, but not much. So, LL needs to advertise more, but that will cost money. The only way for LL to advertise in a big way, is to make cuts else where. They need around $3,000,000.00 a year. Not as big amount as some companies, but still big enough to make an impact. They should also find some famous celebrities to endorse SL. How about Drew Carey? Carey was featured in the Sims game. He could be shown SL, and perhaps try SL out.

LL could offer one year of free premium to game show contestants. They could even win an island, and pay no tier for one year.

You are sure they don't run away because before they even learned how to dress themselves everyone is telling them "CHANGE YOUR VIEWER" which translates to them as "This place is populated by religious zealots who fight petty wars over some access software"? The Linden viewer is not more "confusing" - you just trained yourself out of it's use by using a TPV far too long ;). If you cannot help a person on the viewer most newcomers have: please ask yourself the question if you are in a situation to offer help at all.

I remember when I logged into SL folks like you alienated me pretty much. And your kind is in every newbie area I visited. Maybe, just maybe ... this could be an underestimated part of the first time user retention problem complex.

I hate the Linden Viewer. I use the Singularity viewer. I have used Firestorm, but not as good as Singularity. I hate the black buttons. I prefer blue.  It looks just like the classic Linden Viewer.  I only used Firestorm to put stuff up on the market place.

  10. I would replace 80 LL employees that work in California, with about 200 workers in India. Lets say the wage for each worker in India is paid $5,000.00 a year. Thats about $1,000,000.00 a year total. So LL would save $3,000,000.00 a year. Now they have increased the work force by 120 workers. Some of these could be the new G team. In 2010, LL had about 350 employees. Today they have about 245 employees. That is not enough workers. They need more workers. But that would cost more money if they don't layoff workers from the highest income areas. California is expensive to operate in. You have high taxes, and lots of regulations. So moving out of California, and moving to a no state income tax state, would save LL more money.

Next, they need to advertise. They advertise on the internet. But not on TV, or radio. A lot of people have never heard of SL. They need to also try to get companies to come to SL. Companies did come about 12 years ago, but most of those have left. What companies could do is offer free money. Coke could set up an island. Go there, click on a machine, and enter Coke codes from bottle caps. Then get 5 L$. Nike, and other companies could do the same. But they might offer 50 L$, to 200 L$. Every company that has a presence in SL, would then place codes on their products. Cereal could place the codes inside their boxes.

Try to bring back gambling, if possible. One way is to relocate the company head quarters, and servers to the Cayman Islands, or to Costa Rico.

Have different levels of premium. Right now you can have only 10 pictures in your picts. Want more? Then you have to pay a higher fee. Want more than 70 groups? Then you have to pay a higher fee.

Want to own mainland, but don't want live support, or stipend? Then you pay a lower fee.

So If I was CEO of LL, I would do all the above.

i am not sure of your own experience of Premium ownership of mainland parcels.  In recent times LL doubled the tier allowance from 512m to 1024m. LL also increased the LI allowance for standard mainland regions from 15,000 to 22,500 - a 512m parcel LI is now 175 up from 117 - pro-rata'd increases for larger sized parcels.  LL also changed the way LI is calculated so that a 1 prim standard box now only counts as 0.5 LI when linked - effectively 2 box prims linked now equals 1 prim. And LL did also previously reduce the extra mainland tier schedule by approx. 20%. So for mainland owners (Premium) we did get a whole lot more for our money in terms of parcels prior to this latest price increase, which nobody said no too

within your other idea about basic accounts and mainland parcels. In effect this would mean that every player gets a free 512m "room". That would probably have an adverse effect on resident-owned rental businesses and also probably less interest /uptake in Premium membership from people at the lower parcel/home ownership end

I'm not totally against a price increase. But to go from $72.00, or $99.00, is a bit much. That is more than 30%. I would suggest $75.00, or perhaps $78.00. Then later on increase it to $80.00.  Let's find other ways that LL can make more money. Such as a land transaction fee. Or a higher fee if you want to belong to more groups. Want more than 70 groups? Then you will have to pay $15.00 more. How about a higher fee if you want more picts in your profile? If you stop paying the higher, then you lose the picts at the bottom.

But lets have something else also. I have noticed that profiles say no payment info, or payment info used. Lets have these in our profile.

    Basic, No Payment on File.

    Basic, Payment info Used.

    Premium.

If LL were to adopt my suggestion to have minor premium, then you would see "Minor Premium".

There used to be Payment on file. But that is gone.

if u cash out money  or make enough to buy a sim ...spend tons on stuff in SL then its my opinion  that  you be premium...that simple

If that is the case, then LL should lower premium, or have minor premium. A lot of people can't pay for premium. I know a guy that lives in Venezuela, and is basic. No payment on file. He is a scriptor. He is not on much, and he can't afford premium. I don't think he has a store.

Well, the experience in Bellissaria seems to be showing the way. From that experience, we can learn that people like water access. So maybe some rivers, canals, lakes, and islands would be good. Most of that could be carved into existing space.

We can also learn that people want relief from ban lines and security orb abuse. So curb that in a similar way to how it was done there. It couldn't be identical but the same general idea of requiring a concrete time amount would work well.

It might be a good idea to do away with ban lines. If a person is banned from a place, that is one thing. But to say that only group members can inter a parcel, not a good idea. Especially if it is a large parcel. In some sims, it is hard to fly around, with out hitting a ban line. Do away with those, and flying would be easier. Don't want anybody flying over your land, then get an island.

Ask the group owner. They can disable member visibility

Not that part. This was made a few years ago. You could join a group that had several thousand members, and enter a person's name in the group search, and it would show their name. That was changed because of unwanted TP offers.

Nope, as owner of a group, I can click a little box that will prevent anyone else in the group from seeing anybody except the owners.

ETA:  As Frankie mentioned, the 'always show' might apply to moderators also (which makes sense).  I have no moderators in my group.

I was talking about when you join a group. Used to, when you joined a group, you could see every member. And you could search for a member, and see when they were on last.

SOoo ... Is this when we start to shout about the price increases, or are we all good now.

While I can see a need for some price increase, I do think that a price increase of 30%, or more is too high. I can see a price increase to $75.00, or $77.00.  They need to look at other ways of making money.  They also need to do something about abandoned land. There's still lots of abandoned land. I heard that it is about 25%. Let's try to get that to 5%, or less.

Actually that limitation only exists for groups in excess of 5000 members. For the same reasons that they wanted to reduce the number of group slots ~ they also needed to limit groups with >5000 people from having interactions for the same "this is breaking SL" reasons.

I heard that the reason they made it so you can't see members in groups, that had over 5,000 members, was that some people were offering unwanted TPs. This was a few years back. A person, or persons from a club, were looking up people in groups, and were offering unwanted TPs. Abuse report, after abuse reports were sent. So LL removed the ability to see members, that had more than 5,000 members. The exception is the moderators, and the group owners.

512sqm isnt much but still big enough to make money from. So you get that buy it pay no tier but rent the land out and make money from it.

Thats L$175 per week you could make from it. Deeding mainland to group, you then get a group bonus a extra 10% I think it is. You want that too?

From what you are suggesting I can  then make 9 alts, verify them, pay $12 per alt and land grab 9 1024 sqm plots?

So total of land id own would be 9216sqm deed them all to group and grab that 10% bonus?

All that for a little more then the cost of a premium annual membership.

Yup id be keen on that too. When do you suggest the start this?

But you can't get minor premium for alts. Only one per person.  As for the 512 sq. meters, there would be no group bonus for verified basic. And you will have to be verified. This would need to be done by SSN, or some other ID number.
