Nah, Sylvia. It's impossible for him to be as impossibly handsome as my avi!

Why is there grass growing in my house?
Ian Undercroft replied to Monica Balut's topic in General Discussion Forum
I see this issue has been resolved now. But I just wanted to add that with grass, I've found that, if you highlight transparent, you can touch and edit it without the need to hit its root or centre. -
New Law Would Make Violating A TOS A Criminal Act
Ian Undercroft replied to Perrie Juran's topic in General Discussion Forum
So, for example, operating traffic bots in SL in breach of the ToS now becomes a criminal offence in the US? I wonder what criminal sentence that would attract! ToS are private contracts. Day in, day out private contracts are breached by thousands of people for both good and bad reasons. Those breaches will range from those so minor as to be de minimis to those which are fundamental to the contract. In many instances, the contract will be so poorly or vaguely worded that you may as well toss a coin when trying to determine whether there has been a breach. And yet all breaches of ToS will now be a criminal offence in the US? That strikes me as bonkers. If there is some specific matter which it is desired to legislate against, it should be spelled out in the criminal legislation and not left to the individual whim of those private individuals responsible for drafting particular ToS. -
Are some animals more equal than others?
Ian Undercroft replied to Persephone Emerald's topic in Forums Feedback
There's actually a very legitimate debate to be had as to whether vampires are humans, animal or something else, and, if not humans, why it is they presently have a sub-forum within the People Forum. Before it's pointed out to me, I don't see an inconsistency in having a RP sub-forum within the People Forum because that simply acknowledges the fact that RP is "people" pretending to be something which they're not (whether that something be vampires, furries, faeries or otherwise). -

Consistency, and the lack thereof...
Ian Undercroft replied to Void Singer's topic in Forums Feedback
I agree with your comments, Void. I've been pretty much silent in relation to the vampire event and its "spin offs". However, I struggle to believe what I've witnessed. I've no issue with people placing a set of fangs in their mouths, dressing in goth clothing and pretending to be vampires, if that is what they wish to do. It's just one of many examples of RP in SL. The vampire event appeared to me more of a matter for blogs than the forums. The continued existence of a vampire sub-forum is, it seems to me, incongruous (it sticks out like a sore thumb) and unfair on other role-playing communities in SL (there is no reason why vampire related threads cannot be posted, as they have always been previously, in the RP sub-forum) and thereby divisive. The spam generated by the vampire event (multiple, repetitive threads, in which posters sought to answer the same series of essentially inane questions) is something I found intrusive and irritating and it caused me to suspend my own forum participation until the event was over. -
I first logged into SL in November 2007. I've no idea what the name of my landing point was but I seem to recall there being a largish building there with an expanse of concrete walkways. After undertaking a few tutorial tasks, in the course of which I managed to shorten the length of my standard issue white t-shirt to reveal a tantalising glimpse of navel, I recall moving quite quickly to an open-air freebie location (which may have adjoined my landing point) where I picked up a "Michael" skin and shape, some eyes, some jeans and a pair of white training shoes/sneakers. I managed to "wear" these items, thereby transforming my appearance. After some difficulty I managed to get rid of the horrible newbie hair. I think I spent about an hour wandering around the freebie location before managing to tp away to begin exploring SL proper. I've no recollection of where I went but was lucky in quickly appreciating how search and tps worked. I should also perhaps mention that at the freebie location I picked up a freenis. Sadly I managed to "wear" this item, not realising that it would be visible when I was wearing jeans. I had been exploring SL for a couple of hours before I caught sight of my avatar from the front and realised I had been displaying my "manhood" in its full glory for all to see. Little wonder that no-one spoke to me during that time.

Surely the only thing that should be in our minds on this day is the selflessness and extraordinary bravery of those that have lost their lives or suffered injury answering the service of their countries. It brings a shiver to my spine and a tear to my eye to reflect on a fact such as that in World War II RAF Bomber Command suffered in excess of 55,000 fatalities out of 125,000 aircrew; a death rate of almost 45%. Those brave souls were as good as taking off in their own coffins.

It's also pretty much impossible to know what any of the "spam" threads are actually about because the titles are so long.

Looking for Robb Stark or at least his hair
Ian Undercroft replied to Ellyn Elan's topic in Your Avatar
Hehe! I'm pleased my recollection was correct. -
LL fails during the sign-up process to emphasise the importance of choosing a username that you are happy for others to see and on occasion to address you by. Also, for whatever reason, newbies fail to appreciate that display names exist or how to change their display name. You only have one chance to create a first impression and in this respect the present system fails newbies badly. If I see someone with a username such as jsozxcu and no display name, my first impression is "moron".

Looking for Robb Stark or at least his hair
Ian Undercroft replied to Ellyn Elan's topic in Your Avatar
There's a skin at Redgrave called "Craig", after the musician Craig Lyons. I recall the hair modelled on that skin as very similar to that sought. It may, therefore, be available at the Redgrave store. On a side note, for any guys out there looking for a skin which is compatible with their high-pitched, slightly effeminate voice, Redgrave has just launched a rather dashing David Beckham look-a-like skin called, surprisingly, "David". -
http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Inworld/Best-of-SL-Halloween-A-Resident-Hosted-Event-this-Friday/ba-p/1185891 Mmmm! Seems rather contrived. The names of the resident hosts mentioned mean absolutely nothing to me.

May be you could check out some of these places: http://www.sistercitiessl.com/members.htm -
I lost about a dozen off-sim waves last week. They did not "reappear" in "Lost and Found", which happens when items go "off world". They did not show as transparent ,when I highlighted that. They had been in place for about 9 months, without any previous issues.

Is SL a training ground for RL?
Ian Undercroft replied to Pamela Galli's topic in General Discussion Forum
I suppose that it depends upon the personal characteristics of the individual in question as to whether SL is "training ground" for RL. I can see that interacting with others in SL may provide those who are shy in RL with some greater self-confidence. However, I've always thought that the communication skills required to enjoy SL from a social perspective are the same as those required to enjoy and succeed in RL. SL attracts it's fair share of RL "losers" and "freeloaders" and those people are likely to appear as "losers" and "freeloaders" in SL too. They tend to discover, sooner rather than later, that SL is equally an unfulfilling as their RLs.
