  1. Before you buy anything, juts post the specs here. 'Gaming' is an expression often badly abused by marketing people. I even have seen laptops with integrated intel only graphics being advertised as 'gaming machine'. J.

But, some people get stressed when they see words and jargon, but these are the proper words and they need to use them because they have a more complex task to do sometimes. Why? Well, windows used to wip ethe whole drive, if all linux distro's did this and had all drivers available for thier system from manufacturers then this would be easy for ubuntu and ubuntu could be exactly as easy as windows to install. It's been a while, but that's not how I remember things. Besides, if the OP "is stuck on XP", I'd say a dual boot is preferred over a wiped (I assume you meant wiped not wipped) hard drive. The download is in iso format, so you do need to have the software for that, but aquiring that isn't exactly rocket science. The only problem I ever had with my Mint 13 was the lack of driver support for my wireless adapter, so I had to replace that. Video drivers are available through the "start menu" (can I call it that you Linux freaks? ). SL itself doesn't even need to be installed, it runs just fine from the download folder. Linux is a bit different from Windows, but I don't think it's "not so easy" at all. Just stay away from that scary terminal. You'll never learn Linux correctly if you stay away from the "scary" terminal. Sticking to graphical aplications only is the windows way ( stay on the surface, not knowing what really is happening and not wanting to know). It's liek never opening teh hood of your car, cause you are not interrested in the things that are underneath and one day ending up with a seized engine due to a lack of engine oil/ coolant. The terminal often is a more convenient way to get things done even. Example: Before I dig through the 'start' menu to start a graphical software installation and upgrade programme, I just open a terminal and tyle a short : sudo pacman -Syyu, confirm with my password and my system will perform all available package upgrades. All Mints and other *buntus I used in my life destroyed themselves at some day during some obscure upgrade of ubuntu modified packages without being able to downgrade teh packages again. My oldest Manjaro has been running for almost 2 years now by the way without any need for a reinstallation, it just runs and runs and runs very stable and reliable and I expect it to do the same for a much longer period of time. And if one upgraded package will turn teh system unuseable, I simply downgrade it with Manjaro's/Arch's pacman package manager, try the same with *buntu's apt-get package manager... J.
  3. First: Install the non-free nvidia drivers, the crappy free nouveau driver will limit your graphics card power to approx 20% of what's technically possible. Next: Run the viewer in a terminal to see what causes the crash. Post th eterminal output here, so we can see ifwe can solve it. I presume it could also be a memory issue, 2 GB of RAM is not really enough. J.

  7. Hehe, yes, Linux does not use 50% of the hardware ressources to permacheck if the running instance of the operating system is legally licensed... J. Happy Linux only user since 2007, currently on Manjaro since late 2012 without system reinstall
  8. Can you put that into a readble and understandable form? Punctuation marks were not invented to annoy writers. J.
  9. Ich nutze ebenfalls Paypal in Verbindung mit SecondLife, eine Kreditkarte war dafũr nicht erforderlich, wohl aber eine Verifizierung meines Paypalkontos in Verbindung mit einem Bankkonto. J. Gootverdammt, wann darf man endlich wieder deutsche Umlaute hier nutzen? Schlimm, das sowas nicht gefixt wird. (ũ œ ë ï)

  11. You stated that the machines would run linux as os. AMD drivers under linux are very poor and cause big problems regularly, so for linux, amd would be a no go. J.
  12. A GT 705. Super ultra low end graphics card that is even weaker than most integrated intel graphics and only exists because OEM manufacturers marketing departments can promote their machines would come with a dedicated Nvidia GPU. I'd propose to get a real graphics card ( Something likea GTX ( not GT) 650, 750 or higher), even if the viewer would recognize the GT 705, you would only be able to run sl on lowest graphics settings. J.
  13. Sounds like a good machine to put an up to date Linux on. I'd suggest Linux Mint 17 MATE 32 bit on it. If you're interrested, look here for more infos about Mint. Got any questions? Feel free to contact me in-world. I 'reanimated' quite a lot of older ( ex xp) computers in the last months with Linux, all users, even extreme computer unsavvy people are happy again now. Jeannie
  14. Ubuntu 13.10 will be dead next month. Unity is no user interface for noobs and quite ressource intensive. Intel HD integrated graphics are not know for their supreme performance in SL and 200 US$ will not buy you a *performance PC' for SL J.
  15. Want Ultra working good everywhere in SL? Grab 2000 US$ and go for a nice fat desktop machine with a quadcore CPU, a SSD instead of a HDD, 8+ GB of RAM and a high end GPU, I recommend a Nvidia GTX 780 ti and make sure to have a fast internet connection. J.
  16. So you run Sl on a linux cli system without any operating system user interface? J.
  17. Video memory usage is being capped by LL at 512 MB, so your viewer technically is incapable to use 1 GB of video memory. Look for other stuff running that uses your video ram and close down these programmes. I wonder which operating system you use and how much video ram that system's user interface is using. J.
  18. An AMD fx 4xxx is not that heat developing and 'hefty*, get informed about AMD cpu performance classes before you call a AMD quadcore 'hefty'. it's fx4xxxx ( quadcore), fx6xxx ( hexacore, fx 8xxx ( octacore and fx 9xxx ( Hefty octacore that requires even a special mainboard). My desktp machine runs an FX 8350 with a stock cooler, next to silent, never more than 55-60° C temp unless I compile something on all 8 cores ( you can convert that to non iso temp units like fahrenheid yourself) . J.
  19. The specs look quite good, if you find out later that the fx 4xxx CPU will not suffice, you can still throw an fx 6xxx or 8xxx cpu in the AM3+ socket later. The only problem I see is also the size of the case Looked up the case, and I don't think you should run into problems with it being too small. Have fun with your new machine J.
  20. To reset all settings in Singularity, go to Preferences/General. At the bottom, you will find a big button labelled : "Reset all Settings". Click it, click on "Apply" and then on "OK" at the very bottom and relog. There is no need to go the mentioned "fiddling around with folders in your file manager" way as it is necessary in other viewers. The camera position usually get's frecked up when you press 'ctrl' or 'alt' on your keyboard while leaving Mouselook so remember not to have one of these keys pressed when leaving mouselook . This behaviour was fixed in the latest singularity alpha viewer 1.8.5.5688 by the way. J.
  21. MizzKittenzz wrote: You referring to Windows? Maybe because 99% of programs are built for Windows... Majority of softwares are written for Windows machines. Lol Macs are the most expensive and incomplete OS not windows. I mean Macs can't do hardly anything but play music and surf the web... 99% of all Windows programmes are made for windows, right. 95% of all malware is made for windows too by the way, with the nsa affair in mind, one could even say, Windows per se is malware. There's more than Windows and MAC around, but Microsoft brainwash seems to work perfecty, even if the people read about nsa spying on windows users, they run off to their computer shop and buy a new windows machine and use Google as search provider. 90% of viewers I know run better on Linux than on Windows. J.
  22. Nalates Urriah wrote: The operatinig system is the big factor in performance. Mac's all around are worse then the Windwos machines. Linux machines are behind the curve unless you are making your own viewer. Mac's running anything earlier than 10.7 have serious problems. Those with ATI graphics even more so. Windows XP has a very high crash rate. Win7 & 8 64-bit are the most stable for all viewers. The best choices for SL use is a Windows 7 or 8 64-bit with an nVidia 400 series or better graphics card. Core2 Quads (US$250 range) run well, but the newer iCore chips by Intel (new/refurbished $400 range) are way better. Getting the best performance for SL is a challenge. SL stresses the entire system; CPU, GPU, memory, disk... Those with SSD drives rave about how much better they are than the hard drives with spinning disks we are used to. There are so many things that affect performance the entire computer has to be considered and components matched up. To keep it simple, go for at least an iCore quad process of some type, nVidia graphics, 4gb or more of fast memory - preferably 8gb, and a fast drive. Why would an incomplete, insecure, expensive Operating System be 'the best choice'?
