  1. Welcome to the wonderful world of frecked up AMD drivers and of automatically "updated" Windows 10 "universal" hardware drivers Expect such problems every now and then with new driver versions, the fact that Microsoft messes the already buggy AMD drives up for Win 10 additionally will make things even much worse. AMD graphics, cheaper than Nvidia, and you get a lot of additional fun for the saved money from the really bad drivers on top of the cheaper hardware. I'd return that AMD gpu to the store and get a Nvdia card instead J.
  2. AMD drivers are known for being buggy and problematic, specially when it comes to using openGL, the graphics "language" used by SL, I recommend to use a GPU made by Nvidia rather than by AMD. J
  3. Doesn't look bad, I use the same mainboard on the machine i previously mentioned, legacy bios, no uefi crap, Just add a decent GPU ( preferably by Nvidia) and it will run Sl quite well. You can replace the athlon with an FX series later, for SL, a performant GPU is more important. J.

5. Welcome to the wonderful world of Windows 10 and it's "universal" drivers. I had similar issues that could temporarily be solved by replacing the graphics drivers provided by microsoft with the ones from the GPU manufacturer's website. Unfortunately Win10 always removed these and replaced them with the dysfunctional microsoft universal drivers. I finally downgraded the system again to win 7 which is less intrusive when it comes to force installing drivers without the user's consent. J.
  6. One of my systems uses an AMD FX 8350 Processor combined with a Nvidia GTX 780 GPU custom fitted with an arctic cooling triple fan cooler. Works very well , silent and cool in SL with graphics set to ultra. J.
  7. Water cooled gaming laptop with detacheable water cooling unit? Ridiculous, ugly, impractical. J.
  8. So, can you explain how a Nvidia GTX 980 ( without "M"), which has got the dimensions 10.55 " x 3.87 " x 1.57 " Inch or 26.8 x 9.84 x4 Centimeter which requires two slots on a desktop computer mainboard will fit into a lapptop?
  9. I never activate display names, most of them consist of unreadable silly unicode. So now you have met someone who does not use display names. J.
  10. Download a viewer of your choice, unpack it , navigate to the folder you extracted this data to and locate a file called (viewername), where (viewername) is the name of your viewer, may it be secondlife, firestorm, singularity, kokua or whatever viewer you prefer. Right click that (viewername) file and make sure it is executable. Then, just run that (viewername) file by doubleclicking it and you should have a running viewer. J.

Between windows and SL you will eat through your ram in no time. You will be swapping to disk and it will noticably reduce your performance. Until you get more RAM make sure you don't run any other software while you run SL. Especially not a web browser. Those two things should help a ton. More ram is useless, it's a 32 bit system that supports only up to 3,7 GB of ram. Using more than 3.7 GB of ram requires a 64 bit operating system J.
  12. I recently installed Win10 on a spare hdd, as I still had a valid Windos 7 license. My hardware I7 2nd gen, Nvidia GTX 770M, 16 GB RAM, Win7 home. I tried the following viewers: LL official, Dlack Dragon, Firestorm, Kokua, all worked without problems, some were started automatically in Win8 compatibility mode though. J.
  13. https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/503962/geforce-drivers/tdr-fix-here-for-nvidia-driver-crashing-randomly-in-firefox/#entry1369518 Your SLI bridged Nvidia GPUs will not give you any performance improvement over a single GPU in Second Life as no Second Live compatible viewer does support SLI. I am being forced to ugrade from a perfectly good (more peripherals than machine now) nine year old, Windows XP machine to something bigger and fancier. Let's call planned obselescence what it is and scream from the rooftops that it S---ks! All that said, I find Linden Labs timing just impecable. On July 29, Microsoft comes out with Windows 10. I saw no reason to upgrade to Windows 7 (I have it at work and did not see much of an improvement in performance.) Windows 8 was a mistake, and not worth a new machine (My machine can't run Windows 7, so 8 was out of the question unless worthwhile), so you can guess what I'm waiting for. Naturally, I'd like to see Linden Labs, GIMP, and other critical software providers get on the Windows 10 bandwagon and for Microsoft to get any big bugs out of Windows 10 before I buy in. I'm used to having my online life in the hands of big corporations. Still, this means a wait of six months. So yes, I will give in to planned obselescence in December 2015/January 2016. And I will miss Maggie Mae (my computer) as I have missed few inanimate objects, but all good things come to an end. It would have been a lot better for Linden Labs to have kept supporting XP until the spring of 2016. I am just hoping I won't have to take a hiatus from Second Life due to technical issues. I can spend the fall with Exodus. (I get my eyes poked out from time to time, but not as much as you think.) I'll bow to useless technical change and corporate greed. And I'll planned obselescence one big RASPBERRY. Nobody is forcing you to use Microsoft operating systems, there are alternatives. J.
  15. A graphics card that first came out in 2008 might actually be too old to handle today's viewers, even with an up to date driver, I'd think about replacing it with something newer. J.
  16. What's your operating system, which nvidia driver version do you have in use? J.
  17. I tried SL once on wine (2nd gen i/ CPU, Nvidia GTX 570 GPU, 16 Gb ram) and it was a quite unpleasant experience due to graphics perfomance problems. The VM "gpu" is no abe to handle viewers at all, as the VM cannot use your hardware gpu at all If you still insist on using the official client, install windows, otherwise Kokua 64 bit Linux (latest release April 23rd, 2015) might be your viewer, as it uses a very similar ui like the official viewer and is much more up to date than the 32 bit catznip (latest relase May 9th, 2014). All tpv devs are implementing new offcial viewer functionality constantly to their viewers, so your fear of not being able to use a linux viewer with the latest technology might not be appropriate, especally when using a viewer that was released 13 months ago J.
  18. Stephan Gaudio wrote: I am using 64 bit Linux Mint. The most recent Second Life viewer is not working for me. It crashes right when I start it. There is a bug report in the Jira, so I suppose I am not the only one. The Lindens basically broke the Linux Viewer completely and are not willing to fix it. So in my last attempt to somehow keep SL running and not canceling my account and having to close my business that I built in so many years, today I installed Wine and hoped that it would work with SL. I installed the main Wine package, then downloaded the Windows version of SL, right clicked it to install and it looked great. The install dialog popped up and it installed, but at the end just an empty frame showed and it was stuck. I closed it, restarted the computer but still just an empty frame. SL is not starting. Does anybody know whether I did something wrong? Maybe a problem because I try to run a 32 bit SL on a 64 bit machine? Do I need to install more packages? What would be the alternative? A Virtual Machine? Please help! I do not want to leave SL after 8 years, but I will also never install Windows! You basically are installing some kind of windows when installing wine. There are different 64 bit Linux viewers available, Singularity and Kokua, both have been working very well on my 64 bit linux systems for quite a while, there is not only no need to reduce viewer performance by chosing the very suboptimal solution of running a windows executable under wine, imho is's complete nonsense to run a windows viewer if there are good working native 64 bit linux viewers around. My favourite is singularity, as I prefer the old style V1 user interface, if you like the new V3 UI better, just try Kokua. J.

KindredDeath wrote: Now before i get started with this thread i want you all to know i am extremely new to linux and my knowledge bas of the OS is not very vast, I have gone to the wiki for instructions on how to install the SL viewer for linux but what it tell's me to do in the console there does not seem to be working, so can somebody please give me a step by step tutorial on downloading second life for linux 13.10 64bit, it would be greatly appreciated.:matte-motes-confused: Which Linux distribution/version do you use? Usually all you need is download the viewer archive, extract it, find the executable ( viewername.sh) inside the extracted archive and run it. In some cases you need to make the viewername.sh file executable before being able to run it. J.
