  1. This still has not been fixed? I started a thread about the exact same thing several weeks ago.

With persistance, you will eventually get it to work.  By using the quest tracker function in the game you can actually tell if it won't work because it will show the destination off the map. When you zoom the map back you see  that your version of the quest supposedly ends on a different istance of the same island.

That was only half the battle however. Even once you manage to match it up to the right island it still usually malfunctions. It seems to me like the script was busy with someone who had just turned a quest in there. The problem with that is with it messing up, there is always someone there attempting to turn that quest in.

I can say for sure the only times it succeeded for me (did it on 2 avis) I was the only one in the area of Tyrah's. Both times were in the middle of the night when no one was really around. Hope that helps

  2. I also applaud the desire to prevent cheating. Just not the means used (if it was grabbing IP - technically legal or not) and certainly not the way in which it was handled in the end.

But we all live and learn and get better with experience.

I hosted contests and took manual votes for close to a year. I saw much suspicious behavior and lots of votes where the voting was fair in the technical sense but unfair in terms of contest criteria (in other words people didn't cheat in the vote, but they were blatantly ignoring the contest and just voting up their friend)

I actually just paid an extra winner out of my pocket in those cases, as did a few of my collegues at that place. It was a good time to be in SL :)

In this case they could have arrived at the conclusion they did simply by watching the avatars come and go and the pattern of it. Also some viewers shpow which viewer others are on so you see 5 avatars land in 10 minutes, vote for the same avatar and they all display the same veiwer...It wouldn't necesarily dawn on the person that it could be 5 people switching off. They would just think alt at 1st unless they really thought about it a while.

Someone trying to cheat would be sneakier

  3. hmm, no way to tell for sure but you can rule out former residents on that spot getting inside the orb in the case of the one created the same day at least.

You've moved so kind of a mute point just be happy and move on unless it continues.

It kind of sounds like the landlord was someone that doesn't understand their land and security settings well. A lot of it could have happened mostly from them not having things set up correctly.

also if the land was divided oddly or even possibly contained a small patch of land with different settings within your lot somehow...lol, could actually be owned by someone entirely different altogether

  4. lol, I just think the whole basic design is backward of what it needs to be in terms of privacy and should be rethought in the very near future. And I do stress, it's my opinion. I understand I'm not aware of every possible use for every feature but I don't believe that a feature having a possible use is enough justification for having that feature live in viewers that go out to the masses.

    Here's my point...

This thread was started asking about how to slap a sign on someone that is invisible. Well here's my thoughts when I saw that...

    1.  A  person can be invisible? How? I mean besides wearing an invisi prim which would not obscure their avi name anyhow

    2. ok so if the above is true and people can be invisible, including name tag, and that's ok, first, why is it anyone's business and why do they need to be called out unless they have actually done something wrong and there is proof of it?

    3. If people can be invisible physically and that's just dandy, why can't I login invisible to freind and group lists AND people viewing from the dashboard and their mobile phone? WTF someones right to snoop from a mobile pager superceeds my right to login without unwanted solicitation?

    Yea backwards

And yes, I turn cam crosshairs off in both directions. I don't care who is looking at me. It's their right as long as they dont do offensive stuff, but no one NEEDS to know where I am looking for any reason...ever. If linden labs does for some reason they have my blessing and full cooperation.

  5. Amen Tari

Ya'know I got a notecard early on with a piece of jewelry that explained something very basic about lag that I have always held onto. I think it's something a lot of people miss in their designs. Basically this. Scripted items make queries as they run to each avatar in range and the range can be much greater than you think depending on the script. Individual settings don't stop that. Even if half the people were running wireframe, the scripts are still trying to communicate with them.

    So..

When you build your stuff and measure the load, you need to multiply that number by the amount of avatars you expect to have and then still leave room after that.

I see a lot of places that instead of haveing one or 2 dance balls have 5 or six and additional little gadgets for everything imaginable. I'm strongly apposed to people telling folks they must change their hair or remove things that are part of their basic look and function that work anywhere else, just because the club itself wants to waste huge amounts of allowed script load on totally unecessary things.

These things are not what makes a club. A fun and friendly atmosphere is. It's zero fun when some clown IM's you and says please change your hair, you're causing lag. In the immortal words of Bob and Doug...

    "Take Off!"

want to toss this in as a person who studied design. For the basic build, start with 3 textures, a light a dark and a midtone that compliment each other, and use nothing else till the basic structure is complete. You could actually get away with 2 in some curcumstances. You can add more for little nuances but this really helps make an eye popping design overall as well as greatly reducing the required amount of stuff a person's viewer has to draw. And you'll be glad later when that one thing you really must rez turns out to have 35 different textures and you can't mod it.

And if you ever find yourself acting as described in Tari's post, I'll give it to ya straight. It's tine to find something else to do. Take a vacation, hire a manager, sell or close down. Whatever you need to. There's enough ogres on the grid. We don't need anymore, especially in public places that advertise, asking residents to come enjoy what they created.

I don't know if it's still around or not. There used to be a really cheap (one linden I think) version of the highwind airship from final fantasy 7 around. It was full perm so I rezzed it and took it apart and attached the pieces to my avatar and while it didn't all line up exactly correct, I was a pretty awesome transformer avi that took up the better part of a large dance club.

  7. lol, well stuff like detecting camera position is what I was reffering to by 'nose up your fanny' features. Why anyone thought this was a good idea to have in a viewer I have no idea, but I have seen it cause no end of needless drama along the lines of 'stop looking at me!', usually coming from people that spent a whole lot of time making their avatar look appealing. Once I even saw a sim owner send out a scaulding message in all caps demanding that no one cam her house which happened to be constructed less than 100m from the club. LoL, if anyone in the group wasn't aware of it before that, they certainly were once the notice was sent.

Yea, I'd love a feature that let me totally turn off everyone's ability to see me on line at once. Last time I tried it, the most I could select was 25 at a time.

I realize I could build on an alt and send to myself full perm, but then you get a finished project  with a whole lot of prims listed as created by someone else or 'unknown.

That just wont work for user like me on viwer 1 or snowglobe and no thank not updateing my viwer just for display name why could i it silly.

I can relate Madam. I stayed with the V1 viewer long after most people had moved to emerald, phoenix and a variety of other things. At a certain point the old one just wasn't working well with some of the things they were adding into SL. Display names was one but also mesh was close to going live and other features. I bit the bullet and went to V2 then V3 and then I started experimenting with some based off those.

Also around that time, I started playing with some toys that used remote scripting and since I didn't much care for the original viewer that enabled that, I wound up using Firestorm.

Point is there is a lot more reasons to upgrade veiwer than display names. I'm actually surprised that you can even view a lot of objects and clothing around since more and more of it utilizes mesh. If you're happy, that's what counts though :)

  9. /me settles down a lil as the stream of smoke rolling out her ears dissipates into a faint mist

Keep in mind contests such as these are generally a promotional tool for a club more than any kind of actual contest that judges any sort of talent in any way, shape or form. Best case scenario is the place has a decent amount of people who vote honestly in terms of casting their votes for people they feel best meet the contest criteria.

Usually though, it turns into little more than a popularity contest and as the club staff member you described is probably 'too' familiar with, a lot of times that means dishonest people stack the vote by using alts or otherwise discredit a would-be good thing by TPing large numbers of people at the last minute to vote when they have no idea what they are even voting for.

I'm not saying don't participate, but realize it's usually meant as a fund raiser and rarely will the winners really reflect who was actualy deserving to win.

I know this may sound strange, but I as with a serious note.

A friend was particpating in a photo Contest, and was doing very well, the person who was running the contest, decided that my friend was cheating by using alts to vote for him, myself my wife(sl and rl) and son (rl) where named as a alt. In my household there are 3 different people who play SL and we all use the same internet connection. I also know of other homes where more than 1 person is on SL. A few of our friends do know that we are different people.

I wonder how many homes have multiple players. I have heard of inworld software that can be used to detect "Alt's" but that is flawed my case proves

Welcome to the world of people that use devices that read your IP and make assumtions. Exactly why they need to be perma banned from SL (the devices - and possibly the people that use them too)

I lived in a houshold like you describe once. At one time there were as many as 5 different real life individuals logged into SL from that connection simultaniously and we also had friends that dropped by from time to time that had SL avi's as well.

IP proves ZERO, but it's almost 100% effective if someone wants to use it to track you down and commit a violent crime.

and to answer your question, an alt is a 2nd account created by the same person (or 3rd, 4th, 5th etc w/e)

  11. Don't forget the valium!

    ;)

I wish you luck but I'd also like to toss out this nugget. Everyone and their brother has a club in SL. (I had a vision one time that one day every resident will own a club and we will all just stand in our own clubs spamming each other TPs, notices and invites)

Seriously there are many many good clubs around already that really could use the support and help of passionate, talented people. Why not find one and get involved while you learn about it?

Something else I have discovered, kind of sadly, is (probably because of the money element involved) clubs become very competative and many people can become angry, jealous, suspicious, even self righteous zeolots over their little bit of leased cyberspace. Unfortunately I have seen many people that were freinds become bitter rivals or even enemies over something that started as a fun place for people to hang out and have fun and help newcomers. It's very easy for people to lose sight of that vision once they start to taste a little bit of success.

  12. Ever notice it's always the person with the name that requires mental gymnastics to even read that is offended if you misspell or abreviate? lol

I just wish the forum would show my display name ( Eileen J. Fellstein) instead of user name (or is it legacy name? I'm confused at the difference). I took special care to add the .J middle initial in there so no one can confuse me with all the other Eileen Fellsteins on the grid! :P

The J is for Jenny btw. I figure the grid didn't have enough Jenny's running around.

In all serious I like the last names as opposed to display names, even though I have had some fun with the display names and I realize they can be handy for RP purposes. I like them because it does have that sense of a family name though someone in your RL family may not always be able to find it available if they decide to join you in SL. What else I like is that it is sort of an impossed bit of privacy, something I believe many people have too willingly tossed out the window with the popularity of things like facebook where people post stupid amounts of personaly identifying information about themselves and their RL family for anyone to grab and process at will. Whatever happened to sites warning you against doing that sort of thing?

  13. hehe yea I was only there once. It seems to take an old 'snapshot' of your avatar and toss it in there. It don't end with the blurb. To start with I got spammed by what I think was every single message and notice that ever failed to be delivered at the right time, which also caused a seperate pop up window on the screen (don't remember the wording in it) for each individual one. These were the kind you have to ok to make them go away so it took over a half hour to get through those.

Then...once that was done and I could see something, I was wearing and old group tag from a group I had long since left. I was like 'ewww, get this off of me' lol. I checked my groups and they were all from like 1 or 2 years prior.

Then I noticed that my linden amount was what must have been the combined amount of every linden I had in my account ever. It was a LOT, lol. and I had never had close to that amount in my account at one time. It had to be a running total.

    and nowhere to spend, hehe

I haven't gone back since to see if it's any more current or not but I am guessing not by your post.

I prefer to receive my items in folders with a boxed backup included in the folder.

Best idea so far IMO right there.

I still think there's a better one and I don't know why it wasn't thought of on implimentaion of the system.

Give customers the choice of box or folder when purchasing

Merchants can add a recommendation to buy in a box if they think it applies. Heh there could even be a checkbox in the upload area for it. If it put them in a standard marketplace box, merchants wouldn't even need to actually create the box. (although I know some companies like having things in a huge whirling box with a giant male prim that can be seen from outer space on the off chance someone else might see the add)

when people try to view my profile it seems to not show any information that i have on there...so it shows my profile as blank

    OMG you're dead! o.O

Nah, lol just try relogging. It should show up when you log back in. If not, probably an asset server thing.

and double check that you hit the save button before you do the relog.

Edit: I just went and looked. I see a very nice pick of your avi (tattooed with arm up) and text in 'about me' starts with...

    "im me for :

    All apects of..."

That the right content? If so, maybe your freinds are the one's that need the relog, or could just be lag at your current location

  16. My headphones are definately too loud most of the time to hear anything strange from the air. Hell, if this place get's nuked, I won't even hear the air raid sirens. I will go blissfully to the sound of Nightwish pounding in my cranium.

Which speaking of nukes, that is to me a much more realistic threat (still) Maybe not as much they will be used in the capacity of war, but I have to wonder what effect the underground testing of them has had on our beloved rock.

  17. Yea Ceka, I was trying to toss out a general idea of what the change was with it. Linden labs never made reffernce to any movie ratings in the tos when the change was made. Just my own effort to give it some perspective that is understandable. To me, the change was indeed a very drastic change, as prior to that there was only PG and mature so anything not PG could contain all adult items, events, nudity etc.

I can see why there is much confusion. In my mind they turned a huge portion of the grid into one big 'grey' zone and the average resident who just wants to visit various sims doesn't know if they might find a dance club with strippers or be tossed out for a few casual curse words.

anyway, I took a wild guess and went to Phil's store. (lovely work hon :) ) In firestorm the land is listed as Moderate and the area directly to the south is General. Not sure if that is where he meant, but I am thinking it probably is. I'm guessing some veiwers have just not updated the land rating name changes.
