    Next Steps for Mesh Import

its been quoted that it will be a 4k file size will be rated at 10L and one prim.  Just to point out,  if you go into blender etc ..  create a cube with 6 faces (as cubes are) it has a minimum size on disk of 4k.  so if you do NOTHING with that cube at all it will cost you 10 Lindens,  however if you create a sculpty with 1536 faces at 3rd Leval of Multirez and 12k it will cost you 10 lindens so I feel that the pricing structure is a little off on that thought.  Also as a MESH has less load on the SL infrastructure why would it be loaded with prim weight and additional cost.  This may be due to the fact that the Lindens dont really know yet the effects its gonna have on things.

And to those that reference to Blue Mars .......  SL is run live,  BM you have to download the region you go to before you can enter it ...  so its more like WoW than SL. LL is trying to pull in the facebook crowd for certain and it might be worth LL considering setting some regions aside that are prefixed as i think a lot of retention problems in SL are due to people signing up and not having a clue what to do when they get here.

ok .....  so its a week till beta release of Mesh Beta......  and so far we have nothing over technical requirements,  bone allocation,  weighting,  prim counts,  linden cost ...  wether there is any point normal normal mappings or maximum poly counts.  Are we going to have 500,000 poly meshes floating around doing nasty things to the grid.

I would like some more information as despite being a builder who does sculpties I feel like anything i am doing in Blender at the moment is JUNK untill i can actually know things as i cant test anything or find the information elsewhere.

the purpose of the wording is to establish that by uploading content,  you are giving LL the right to distribute it to other users of an unnamed nature.  This is in order to provide the service or else when you walk into a sim you would have to agree to access and accept liability of access and that of the original copywrite holder. You as a content creator would also have to give named access in order to comply with copywrite.

At no point does SL claim ownership and in fact in several points

7.5     You may delete copies of your Content from the Service, and the  licenses you have granted for the deleted copies will terminate with  certain limitations.

You may delete copies or instances of your Content that you have  displayed In-World or that are in your Account inventory through the  normal functionality of the Service, including by emptying the trash  folder in your Account inventory.  In such event, the licenses granted  by you in this Section 7 shall terminate in the manner provided below,  but only for those particular copies or instances of Content that you  have deleted from the Service.

In a nutshell .......  if you delete it,  then the licence to distribute which would also indicate under a permission system granted by the creator would also apply. That is LL indicating that the content is still offered to LL under licence until that licence is void.

Of course you can read into what ever you like into TOS ...  like those great people who say " in contacting me you agree that i have right to distribute your private conversations" and as such the TOS by their interpretation is null and void.

There has been pros and cons in all arguments.  but may I ask...  what exactly is the problem..  im really unsure how mesh is the cause of so much heartache and disruption.

im not trying to antagonise, yet we have to look at it from the point of view of those people who create now....  does the fact that they can use PS or Gimp make them super elite over lets say some poor soul who only has paint or templates to work with.

We are all one step above and one step under everyone else. Neither are we better or worse we just use the tools that are thrown at us.

this is not about IMVU...  the doom bringers have been saying everything you are saying since ive been here which is 2006.  if its not flexy ...  its sculpty or Viewer 2  or or or .....

I pay for my SL on more than one Avatar,  ive owned mainland sims and i have an island for my store (own being a loose word) so I keep LL coffers topped up with my contribution.  It may have escaped you but there has been a world wide recession for the last 2 years and being somebody who has been out of work during that period ..  and yes .  a professional in the IT industry I am supprised that LL are able to sustain what is essentially free to the masses for so long,  in comparison to the low poly stuff in WOW.  What makes SL special is the fact that its a blank canvas...  if you want to build or not,  or want to socialise,  dance,  role play , shoot  it doesnt matter theres a place for all.  the fact that the hardware requirements for SL is MASSIVE...  and having run an open sim at home the bandwidth needs isnt too light either.

So they let some staff go ...  you seem so pent up on that fact and mesh seams to just irritate you to the point that you keep raising about staff.  Heres an idea ...  go back to pay only accounts so that 10 year old kids with no payment info cant get in and beg in groups for " can you lend me L$100 till tommorow" im a designer ...  not an assembler ..  like i said i make sculpties and im learning mesh,  I could of course sit here and complain over it or i could spend that time educating myself so i can be in with what i need.  If you make sculpties Vivienne then the technology is not beyond you..  only that you have other points that this just adds to.  This particular blog is about MESH ....  not about LL laying off staff ...  or wether prof wants to walk around with a prim on her head in disgust.

MESH IS COMMING!!!!!!! get on with it ...  or DEAL with it .  you arnt forced to use or abuse it only to ignore or accept either which way those that can will and those that cant wont.

I really cant understand why people are really pent up over it ...  war in the middle east,  poverty,  recession, unemployment ...  thats not important  " I DONT WANT MESH!! " seams to be.   jeezzzzzzzzz

I love this blog,  especially posts on mesh.

I've heard comments that SL will close as mom and pop businesses will close if mesh comes as they wont be able to compete etc,  that people wont be able to pay tier etc.

My thing ins SL was GOR,  in particular combat based where sims would regally have 40 avatars in and prims would be kept low and avatars would be lightened to make them faster on the FPS. yet I like many enjoy being able to make what comes into my mind and as such because im a sculpty person.

wether it be IMVU , Blue Mars or even WOW,  there is gonna be no difference wether you want it or not,  mesh will come and you either use it or you wont, that is where your personal choice comes in,  along with wether you as a consumer will buy it or not.  I know that those people who make clothes and can make sculpts will use it,  those people who make non human avatars will use it if possible to make those parts that they cant use elsewhere.

It doesnt matter what application is better wether it be free or hundreds of " insert currency here ",  its wether you have the time or inclination I for one welcome it..  and have spent some time trying to reprogram my brain out of sculpty mode. I am scared yes......  i do sit there and worry about whats the point of spending hours doing something and will it be cost effective....  well as a man who spends 100's of lindens on uploads to complete an outfit i can saw for ME ....  yes mesh is worth it and i appreciate having that additional tool to make things i want to make.  I am not a professional designer,  im not trained in 3d in fact im self taught like so many here.  but its not the end of the SL world,  the sky isnt falling in.  If SL goes it will not be because Qarl Linden is no longer with the team as he was brought in for Sculpty development and now we move on the Mesh side.  I would like to see what can be done so we can be in awe of the works people can do.  Who builds a better mouse trap catches more mice,  those that dont ....  well ..  im sorry.  I will just try to grow to satisfy the customers needs and i dont want my skill to be a reason why i close my sim penniless

    Next Steps for Mesh Import

    im rather curious,

I have read back through most of the posts here and I am both excited and scared of meshes.  The main reasons are that i used to be a prim thrower,  I still remember when i made my first T-Shirt and panicked.

I have friends who build with just prims,  those that build with prims and sculpties and there will be those that build with prims, sculpties and meshes,  what does this mean for me ...

Well i used to be part of the " i cant do that " collective,  scared of sculpties till i went through the process of buying packs, then altering a sculpty to meet a requirement to eventually learning how to make a scupty this all in all has taken me a few months to learn the mother of airplane cockpit software Blender.  I didnt give up and I make some very good things and even sell my sculpties in packs for others yet i sit here agreeing with many yet am amazed with the views from established builders who would not remember preflexy with simpsons style skin and playdoh hair.  I am not going to throw works like luddite at the group here...  only that i feel your pain over the fear of the new technology being developed.  I dont think this will replace those that use prims but it will give the tools to creators should they wish to use them.  If you sit back and say " this will destroy SL ..... " is really " this will make my business unviable" yet i will  ..  like sculpties bother to learn the skill required and I will be able to finish works that i have stopped because prim arms have nasty joints.

i have competitors that have cornered a market on clothing and will pump out an outfit for less than L$50 upload costs and a days work for L$500...  and i have spent a week and L$600 because i have a belt that fits the waist,  or a set of boots that doesnt look like every other set of boots just with different textures.

I have memories of friends being terrified of Photoshop now producing wonderfull peices of furniture and now also incorporating sculpties into those works and I couldnt be more proud of them ..  because they didnt give up.  I dont think any of this is beyond the capabilities of people.  With things like gimp and blender,  cost isnt part of that argument.  would not  clothing that fits..  thats rigged to bend and move be better for you......  i believe that we are all consumers we want to BUY clothes that are meshes ......  as long as we dont make clothes  or avatars that are rigged meshes as long as we dont make skins,  we want the product as long as it doesnt invade our bottom line.

I dont know how to do brain surgery  ..  does that mean the local hospital should let brain patients die because i dont know how to do it.  I should hope not..  you either have the skill ....  or you learn the skill,  if you have or wish to do neither  then I hope you are stood there ....  orange with your linden skirt and plasticine hair as that is what you are offering ..  lack of change due to ignorance.  i WANT mesh ...  even if i dont really know how i will learn not only to compete  ....  but to grow,  to make those things i cant make yet or is unviable with sculpties alone.

Am I elitist ...  hell no,  im average but i at least TRY and sometimes it works ,  sometimes it doesnt but incompetance isnt acceptable ...... ignorance is or lets smash up those pesky looms and steam engines because it puts the common man out of work.
