  1. There's nothing wrong with acquiring those services, they have grown and became essential to business. If they are suddenly gone it will negatively affect everyone.

But yes, of course they are going monetize CasperVend, that's why they Patch Linden worded the post as such - "foreseeable future" which is vague.

Can't really blame LL for the Linden Homes too. They make things easier and ..prettier. Resident-run business land can't run on this scale. I see it as a replacement for "mainland" which looks atrocious.

A commercial-grade perfect body is literally the LAST thing they should be doing. It would kill avatar commerce in SL stone-dead, and without avatar commerce, there is no SL.

The starter body should be exactly what it is - a decent (but not perfect) avatar that's good enough to achieve user-retention in the first few months, and a stepping stone to a full-featured commercial body without the horrendous learning curve that new users currently have to fight through.

With the NUX body they can get used to what a mesh body and head are, so there's less of a technology leap when they finally decide to get something better.  And this way they can go a few months so they can learn properly, rather than shreiking in horror at the classic avatars and wondering why they can't look like the avatars in all the pictures without spending L$10,000 or more. It's no wonder so many new users give up and quit within a month.

Which is exactly what commercial mesh bodies are and what any future mesh body will be. However perfect the mesh body is, the system body will still be there underneath. You cant change that without rebuilding SL from the ground up ditching SL altogether and building something different from the ground up. And we already saw what happened to that idea, with Sansar.

Don't know what you mean by a "compatibility layer" but deformers are definitely possible. For example, Signature has a new body, David, which is more muscular than Gianni, but it includes a defomer so it will fit with Gianni's clothes. This is a genius move. Legacy did the same when their female body was first released, with a deformer that allowed it to wear some other body's clothes (I think it was Maitreya but I'm not 100% sure). I don't think it's really needed any more with the support that Legacy has now but for any new body, being able to wear clothes that are already out there is pretty much a necessity now.  Failure to do that and you'll end up with a body that no-one will use because there's nothing to wear, and clothing makers won't start supporting a body that no-one is using.  You have to break that deadlock early on, or the body is doomed to fail.

No, it won't kill commerce, market will simply adapt. Just like when mesh came out and it killed lots of brands but many new were established. SL hasn't gone anywhere... The only way to kill SL is to try to sanitize it and make it PEGI like they did with Sansar.

Companies going out of business is completely natural. Apple pretty much killed Dark Sky app when they upgraded their own iOS weather app. Does it suck for Dark Sky? Yes. But as user I like that I don't have to install yet another app for basic functionality.

If people prefer something extra/specific which Maitreya offers they will stick to it and the brand will survive.

Also It must be fun for new residents to accidentally detach their head or body and wonder what the deuce is going on...

And by "compatibility layer" I mean system that lets people use Maitreya rigged products on Kupra for example. And no -  deformers are not going to help although they do in the case of Gianni -> David because both bodies are made by same person,  they have the files, therefore can "extrapolate" the values for the deformer.

  3. Not only 10 years too late but not even close to 3rd party solutions. A multi million dollar company can't afford professional grade 3D artist?

Also this doesn't appear to be an entirely new body system but just a mesh worn on top of the system body.  I don't see this dealing with the whole body clusterfudge mess that currently is.

If it's even technologically possible, I'd much rather to see some kind of compatibility layer. Every year a new body comes out, and old stuff don't work because nobody will update  tens or hundreds products.

How do you feel when someone offers unsolicited to give you a "better looking" avatar?

    if you're a girl and they're a girl,
they are actually marketing agents of several makers.
Most women don't like seeing other women as better than themselves (naturally).

If you are a girl and they are a boy, yes they want to slex you.

If you are male and they are female, they are actually a marketing agency.
they use female avatars to approach you while actually behind the avatar is a big bearded man.
    LoL

If you're a boy and they're a boy, they're actually a gay guy looking to slex you.

The only way I'd mind it is if it was a cell phone code only as I do not text, explaining my extreme far-sightedness in the other thread which makes it difficult for me to see things up close - so I do not text at all period.  My phone is mostly for 911 emergency calls.  Otherwise, I message my family and friends through FB.  There need to be more than just one way to receive the code to put in is what I am saying.  There needs to be both a code for cell phone OR email with a choice to choose one or the other otherwise it's discriminatory against those with a visual handicap.

    1) You can correct it with glasses or contact lenses...

    2) Every smartphone allows you change the font/UI size

    3) Android/iOS can even read you the message.

    There's no discrimination.

As Linden Lab was acquired by an investment group more interested in Tilia, is it really much of a surprise that there is a fee increase?   I'm more surprised that they didn't increase everything across the board.  Not to say they won't be doing so in the near future but what they have increased seems to spread things out rather than just hitting one group (land own tier increases or an increase in premium membership fees).

They will do another transaction fee increase next year. And something else. Slowly over time. It's the boiling frog fable.

Before the acquisition, LL repeatedly increased all fees trying to bump the revenues and increase the market value of the company before they sell it.

What I find hilarious is the claim they are "committed to reinvesting all of that revenue back into Second Life". So basically the investment company is not going to make anything off SL?  Either they are good samaritans or trying to increase the value of SL again and sell it for profit.

  7. if she has a dedicated GPU but runs FS with the integrated, the hardware info would show the integrated anyway.

Radeon HD 7480D is integrated in AMD A4 5300 CPU's and she says her GPU is 5300 but pretty sure at this point she was mistaken and that's her CPU. And the 4GB memory she's mentions is the system memory.

Maybe try Catznip viewer, no EEP support yet but you would get good UI and better performance.

    Mystery solved.

No, I don't see anything like that.  But, do you mean the icon on the top left when the viewer is open?   Well, that's what I thought you mean and no there is nothing like the above to check.

No, the Firestorm icon which you click to launch it. Right click on it to get this menu and see if there's "Run with graphics processor", if so, choose AMD. See if there's difference. The fact that Dynamic Texture Memory is locked makes me think you run Firestorm through integrated graphics. (assuming you are correct about having RX 5300 although this card has 3GB memory, not 4 as you say)

And for the love of Flying Spaghetti Monster, copy/paste us the info from Help -> About Firestorm.

Okay, thanks...I need time to read that as my ex used to do this stuff...I'm not sure what to do...it's Greek to me but I did find out I have a 5300 series and at least got that far.

I feel like this viewer is more for intermediate and advanced.  I'm having a helluva time at it and I'm not a newbie.  But, then again, many say newbies will go on the LL viewer which does seem easier but not those who are returning.  Those returning may go direct to FS.  However, what I've heard is the problem may be with AMD although Rowan says no.  So, that means certain AMD possibly.

But, still, okay this next picture is Nan's Optimal Prim and Skin which is usually way to bright for me and my monitor is already on low brightness at about 45%, and it looks really blow out and like she just got out of the water even though I have materials in the CATWA hud very low to almost off it's so low in the Catwa hud.  I didn't turn on shadows, I didn't think I needed them here.  However, on Annan Adored, it's same, looks like she is covered in a sheet of plastic or underwater.

    Screenshot (225).png

AMD has 5300 series CPU and GPU. Are you sure that's the GPU? You haven't provided the hardware info from Help -> About Firestorm.

From one of the screenshots I can see Texture Memory Buffer is set to 512MB and apparently it's maximum for you because you can't enable Dynamic Texture Memory which is available to GPUs with more than 512MB memory...This is strange because AMD RX 5300 series GPU have 3GB memory therefore the option should be available to you.

You either don't have RX 5300 series GPU or you are running Firestorm through the integrated CPU's graphics processor. Right click on Firestorm's icon and see if there's "run with graphics processor" option in the context menu, if yes, Select AMD/Nvidia.

Or you do have RX 5300 series but drivers are screwed up.

Here's how to get the hardware info. You may just copy/paste CPU: and Graphics Card segments.

    image.png.538fda0776efdc803aae3297a8db1f

P.S. Dynamic Texture Memory is a Firestorm feature added in 6.4.13, it's possible the issue is there if they have made some other code changes related to Texture memory.

I certainly hope with all the other social media outlets that are banning hate groups, Trump, and their speech in light of the attack on our nation's capital that Second Life is not becoming a haven for them. What is Linden Lab doing to make sure they don't hide here?

What about that group of people who burned government buildings and private properties during the summer? Occupied police stations, occupied part of a city as "autonomous zone". I see their flags around SL quite often.

Being in any specific private groups is hardly a right, and certainly not on the same level as "being regarded as a human being" or "being allowed to live" which are typically what fascists seek to deprive selected groups of people of. And so they're removed from social groups to stop them from propagating those ideologies.

Sure, someone's allowed to have those opinions. But expressing them in public and trying to put them into practice? Well, there's the bit about "where my rights begin", again.

Always the fascists....but never a word about the communists who are doing the same... right now...with the help of Big Tech who take advantage of this moment to grab even more power. Having useful idiots sure is great. But they are going to be the next on the list.

It is only simple to simple people. Facebook, google, Amazon keep buying up the most successful companies around the globe because they match their business profile, because investors think that these companies have a lot of value and because they believe in their future and they see their potential. Have you ever heard that one of them bought a company in distress?

Few search queries will  show you failed products that google and facebook acquired. But ...don't do that. It's for simple people lol

Please do your homework, buying distressed tech companies is a common practice. And it's not rare when it doesn't pay out.

Second Life was never doing better. What worries you? All numbers are up and through the roof. Land sales are up by 60% as far as I know. First time in 17 years the Lab is sold out. Sansar is gone. And do you really think professional investors would spend a single Dollar here if they won't have good reason to believe that it's a good investment? I would be worried if they had sold to some no name investors (like they did with Sansar) but these people know what they are doing and they see Second Life's potential. If I had the cash, I would invest here too. Now even more.

Land sales don't mean anything really. Estates die all the time, people move, it could be that.

Yes, I totally think that investors are capable of doing bad investments, especially when it comes to tech. Seen it already.

But of course you are going to spin this and tell people everything is fine when you are financially incentivized. You won't benefit if people panic or just start to leave.

And for the most successful estate on the grid(self proclaimed) I've never heard of you. Not even 2 weeks ago when I saw looking for a homestead.

If SL was doing so good as you claim there won't be need to be sold. It's simple. You don't sell your golden goose...assuming SL is one, which is not anymore.

I don't need a grain of salt while reading your posts, I need an entire sack.

  13. I like how Linden employees come here to say it's a good thing. If SL was doing well and was very profitable it wouldn't have to be sold. But thanks to Ebbe Linden and his amazing management skills here we are. Ditched Patterns, Ditched and sold Sansar(many people said it's going to be a flop way before millions of dollars were spent). Now time to jump off the ship while it hasn't sunk yet completely.

Those investors will want to make their money back as soon as possible. So get ready to be  milked with higher taxes and other stuff.

Funny thing is that I have no issues with real-world gacha machines, because you fully own whatever item you get from them.

Not so much in SL where in most cases, you're just allowed to look at it and contemplate on your mistakes.

In Japan gachas are regulated, and companies publish the probability rations. And in general, RL casinos are regulated by state agencies and random inspections occur, checking if machines have been modified.

So no, don't compare regulated industry to a script coded by someone you don't even know and nobody can revise it. This is one of the reasons Zyngo got banned.

I'm looking forward the day gachas are finally banned. They are abused beyond absurd already...

  15. Please explain why Sansar processing fee is 1.5% and why you are not planning to raise it up? Suddenly the "regulatory climate" is not a problem. It's time to milk the 100 Sansar users and put the burden on them to make back "your" investment.

And if your reason to reduce groups was the back-end strain, why didn't you first try to optimize your code? Implement new tech, protocols, etc? But no, first thing is to cut off basic stuff .

Sure it's not easy but it's a mandatory.

It's laughable to say "We’re making lasting investments into SL in infrastructure, features, and content" when you take away the SL's staff to work a dead project. And lets not mention fitted mesh implementation from few years ago....

  16. No matter how I look at it, I can't see any way how Linden Lab can justify those changes other than pure lazyness and greed.

Can't remember any platform I've used that suddenly cutoff basic features to boost premium accounts....

And on top of that, doubling the processing fee from 2.5% to the wooping 5.0%. FIVE PERCENT?

    Quote

This fee change offsets increased regulatory and compliance costs to Linden Lab and is in line with our continued commitment to the long-term successful operation of Second Life.

Our goal with today's announced pricing and feature changes is to proactively evolve and strengthen the Second Life economy. We hope that these ongoing efforts to bring a better balance to Second Life will ensure a prosperous future for the entire community for the next 16 years and beyond.

To help the economy? Oh really? And I thought you run out of funds because Sansar and now it's time to milk your only profitable project.

Yes, I can see your "commitment" to SL, fired so much of the staff, and moved most of what is left to work on Sansar. It's been about 1.5 years since you announced the return of old names but nothing yet. I fail to see how something this simple is taking you so long. The code for it it's already in the back-end, most of the work is frontend and it's minimal.

SL has been doing gradually downhill ever since Ebbe Linden stepped as a CEO. This guy is just clueless.

  17. Lol, what is this sh.t ... really... Who needed these web profiles? Thanks for asking us again what we think about it, LL. You always care for our opinion and we all really appreciate it. Thank for not being also able to load profiles or edit mine thru the built-in browser... and for that I can't find people with your search engine unless I'm using Phoenix/Emerald/etc.

You are winning again. Go on and make our experience even worse here.

Pic related. It's me right now...
