  1. I for one am not interested in playing this type of game. I have to agree about their attention (and resources) would be drawn away from Second Life. They should fix the problems that have been plaguing SL for years. How many people do you know that have left Second Life, closed their stores, given up their sims or downgraded their land size or gave land up out of frustration? I know a lot. My own company used to own a number of sims where we rented land out, but we got rid of them all because they had problems that LL wouldn't fix after months and months of reporting and complaining about them. All they did was tell us outright lies or blame it on anything they could think of OTHER than themselves. Why pay all that money for headaches? They could make entry into SL easier - not by changing the viewer into some half-baked design that no experienced resident that I know likes. I'm sure residents could give them some valuable ideas of how to do this if they would listen. They should also take a hard look at tier pricing. If they lowered it significantly people would be much more willing to own it and they could make higher profits on volume. In the end though, LL is a private company and not a democracy. They will do what they want and time and again they have shown that they don't care what we think.
  2. My theory on increasing avatar size is this A lot of men enter SL and decide they want a big macho avi and set the sliders to max. As the tendency increased, other men already in SL follow suit when they begin to notice they are not "measuring up" and don't want to appear to be a shrimp. Then the women increase their avi size because when they use couple balls with a very tall man they are floating above the ground and don't like it or the cuddles they use look awkward when the avi's relative size makes the animation look awkward. However, there are exceptions to this. I know at least three men in SL that have been in here a long time and are extremely tall in RL and want their avi to match their RL body as close as possible. I haven't changed my height since I originally made my shape. Back in 2006 I was on the taller side for women as I'm a bit taller than average in RL and based my avi on my RL body. But now, I'm a shrimp compared to most women. I'm sure the Lindens get the last laugh on this. As avi sizes have increased creators of furniture have had to increase the size of furniture too to accommodate this. The larger furniture leads to larger rooms and houses, which in turn lead to a need for larger lots and then larger tiers. Maybe a campaign should be started to get everyone to decrease the size of everything by half! :smileytongue:
  3. From your post I wasn't sure if your issue was you want to go to mature or adult areas and can't because your not age verified or if you can't because you have no payment info on file. These are two separate issues. The owner of an estate or land can restrict access both ways. So if you have age verified, and still can't go where you want to go, then it may well be that the land owner requires you to have payment info on file in order to enter. If you don't want to put payment info on file, there is no way around this. You just can't go to those places. The reason many people restrict entrance to their land for this reason is due to griefers. Griefers are not going to have payment info on file that can be used to trace who they are. Another reason is the owner only wants people who can afford to pay for whatever product or service they offer and do not wish to deal with people who can't. What you may want to look into is a prepaid credit card that you buy for a small amount. A lot of people that don't want to give bank or credit card account info to Linden Lab for a variety of reasons use these.
  4. When I first came to SL there were'n't many people in it - only a few thousand accounts. i remember the day that the 10K people milestone was reached, which was after I had been in SL for a while. The first few weeks I wandered around mostly learning through trial and error or asking an occasional question of a random person i happened to run into. You really had to seek people out as the 'world' at the time was mostly empty. Folks were friendly and were happy to answer questions, but no one really took me under their wing or acted as a mentor to me. I did make friends with people that were newbs like me. I even taught myself to build and script. After i was here for a couple months and knew the basic ropes to a degree, I made it a point to help newbies because i saw it was something that was sorely needed. The more experiece i gained the more I became the mentor and enjoyed adopting a newb or two at a time helping them to set up their avi, teaching them the ropes and to build if they wanted to learn. I always chose people who seemed serious about learning and were eager. Learning was a two way street, as they probably taught me as much about other things as i taught them about SL. The only thing i ever asked in return for my mentoring was that when they felt ready that they in turn adopt newbs and pass on the knowledge. Over the years i've never regretted it as a number of those people are now some of my closest friends. I've managed to maintain these friendships with some of the early ones for more than five years now. I encourage everyone to mentor a newb at least once. Its a very enriching experience.
  5. I've served on juries twice recently. In one case the evidence was overwhelming for the defendant's guilt, do i have no second thoughts or regrets. The second case was different. It was a murder trial. There was no solid 'hard' evidence. No DNA, no other positive tests of any kind. We sat through the entire case and it lasted several days. The prosecution's case was weak and circumstantial. It was like they went and arrested the first man that fit their profile of a likely suspect. It was hard to figure out why they even brought it to trial. In the end, after hearing closing arguments, the judge sent the jury from the room to deliberate. After the preliminaries, the Forman asked for a first vote just so we knew where we stood as a group and what we needed to discuss more. Everyone on the jury voted not guilty saying the case was far from proven beyond doubt. The Forman was writing up the verdict on the form they gave us, when we called back into court. The Judge said after deliberating it all himself he was dismissing the case for lack of evidence. It confirmed for us that we had made the right decision. Even if that hadn't happened I would have been comfortable with my vote.
  6. A greeter with a simple welcome message and maybe a statement of who to IM if you have a question or problem is fine. Giving me a bunch of stuff or asking me to join the group is annoying. I just hit ignore automatically and decline all offers. If I want to join the group I look for a group joiner in the store itself.
  7. I am sorry for the loss of your friend. However, be cautious about taking anything from the avatars account. Many people are not aware that a SL avatar's possessions belong to the estate of the deceased account holder (as registered with LL) and must be dealt with according to the terms of any RL will or law that governs asset distribution. If you remove things from the account and are not entitled to them legally, you may be guilty of theft and end up having RL legal problems. Of course, if you are the heir of the account, you may do as you wish. However to protect yourself you need to notify LL of this and submit proper documentation if you have not done so. See this link for more information: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:death_and_other_worries_outside_Second_Life
  8. Folders and suborders are the key but the names should be what works best for each person. For instance I sort clothes by the type they are, dresses, formals, pants, shirts, club outfits, etc. Then within each folder suborders labeled in color groups. The more folders and suborders you have arranged in a way that is logical for you the faster you can find things. Another tip is to keep things you rarely use but don't want to delete inside of prims. Here's how. Rez a prim, and go to edit and the edit contents tab. Drag things from your inventory to the folder you see in edit contents. You can put hundreds of items in a prim this way. When your done loading, Name the prim something that describes what you put in it, such as old shoes, free gadgets, etc. Then take the prim into your inventory and put it in one of the folders you have made. You can reduce your inventory count quite a bit this way. When you want something, just rez that prim out and go to the edit contents and find your item then drag it back to your inventory. My last piece of advice is to take five minutes to sort and purge your inventory everyday. It's surprising how many items you can pick up everyday and how fast it can get out of control if you don't.
  9. Quality and originality and fresh ideas are what keep me coming back. I buy regularly from a few stores because that is what they offer but I'm not loyal to a brand for a brand's sake. I like stores that offer fresh merchandise on a regular basis too. There are a number of designers that I love and I will buy everything in their shop I like. Then I'm disappointed when I come back (after a reasonable time) to see nothing new or new items that are basically variations of an older release. When I come with lindens to spend and nothing is fresh or interesting to buy you lose me. I am always glad to find new designers that offer more than the template clothing that you see all over the grid with minor variations.
  10. Do you mean take them off the marketplace so they are no longer available for sale? if you do then you do that on the website itself under My Marketplace, Manage Inventory. You can 'unlist' the item and that will remove it from the marketplace offerings but the listing will still be there to list again at a future time. If you want to remove the items from the list, take them out of your magic box and then click on the button that is labeled "Sync Marketplace with Magic Boxes". To remove everything, take it out of your Magic Box so its empty first. The message about the double listings is telling you that there is a bug that may list one item twice on your inventory list. However, if you update one,the duplicate will update too. This will be fixed eventually.
  11. While SL is a game to many it's really not. There are major companies, governments, universities and other institutions in here already that use it for many things. A few uses of it are: modeling RL products that people can 'walk around or through' and even interact with in some ways . Granted you can't use it for testing because there is no RL physics here. But a script can simulate a lot of things for demo purposes. virtual classroom instruction and training-even 'field' training virtual conferences virtual conventions promoting RL tourism research in a wide variety of fields and this is not a comprehensive list. I own a business that assists RL companies, universities and institutions of all kinds with using SL as more than just a game. My company is recognized by LL as an official "Second Life Solution Provider". Some organizations have public sims you can visit. Others have private sims that you can see on the map but can't go there without being a member of a particular group. There are even companies that use SL behind a firewall with sims not connected to the grid so they are assured complete control and privacy for security and proprietary reasons. So no, SL is not a 'game'. Although it can be very entertaining, it is put to a lot of serious uses.
  12. If you do not wish to purchase Lindens with real life money, you will need to earn them by having a job, or selling a product you make or service. You can also obtain them by winning contests or by participating in marketing studies like surveys. Jobs are varied in SL and so is the pay. For instance, most club hosts and dancers work for tips. Other jobs offer an hourly rate of pay or even a weekly salary. The higher the wage the more experience and skill you will need to have. Some jobs pay a commission, such as an agent who rents land. Making things or offering a serice requires some level of skill that you have obtained either in SL or in RL. There are classes you can take to teach you various skills. Some classes are free, others you will need to pay for. Look on the forum boards and classifieds for informatoin about jobs, the events list for scheduled classes or general search for places that offer classes.
  13. You agreed to abide by the license when you agreed to the TOS. See Section 7 of the TOS "You (creators) retain any and all Intellectual Property Rights you already hold under applicable law in Content you upload, publish, and submit to or through the Servers" "You acknowledge that when you receive a User Content License you receive only licensing and use rights: You therefore do not acquire ownership of any copies of the Content, or transfer of any copyright or other Intellectual Property Rights in the Content. You acknowledge that with respect to the use of the words "Buy" and "Sell" as used in this Agreement and throughout the Service in the context of User Content: (a) the term "Sell" means "to grant a User Content License in exchange for Linden dollars or other consideration in accordance with the Terms of Service," (b) the term "Buy" or "Purchase" means "to receive a User Content License in exchange for Linden dollars or other consideration in accordance with the Terms of Service," and © the terms "Buyer," "Seller," "Sale" and "Purchaser" and similar terms have corresponding meanings to their root terms. This includes User Content that may be Bought or Sold on the Second Life Marketplace web site." Therefore you are not buying the item, you are buying the right to use it under the terms of the license granted by the creator.
  14. I don't sell clothes but I have lots of experience with employees in SL. Many people in SL think everything is a game, even a job they have. They think nothing of blowing off their employer if they get a date or even find something "better" to do and just not showing up. Finding employees that are dedicated and reliable is very tough. I've interviewed many people that want to be hired and they all say in the interview what they think you want to hear about their commitment, but then when they get the job act entirely differently, leaving me in a lurch and scrambling to find a replacement for them when they are a no show. Bots are reliable. They never do this to you. Secondly, as a customer I've been in stores that have 'live' models. But the models come and stand on the pose stand then go afk to do something in RL, IM their friends and become so deeply engrossed in chatting they aren't paying attention or are otherwise distracted by something. I rarely find a model that actually will answer a question I may have or that is able to tell me where to find something I'm looking for. Mostly I may as well be talking to a wall as I get absolutely no response. (and yes I can tell a bot from a live model) As a customer, I don't see any advantage to having a live model over a bot for this reason. Lastly, if you use models in store all the time, bots are cheaper. Yes there is the initial cost of buying them, but you don't have to pay them, so in the long run they are more cost effective. Keeping overhead down allows you to sell your clothes for less and probably sell more as a result. Remember, anyone that can afford a good skin, hair and shape can be a store model as it sure doesn't take skill to stand on a pose stand, so I imagine the competition is very tough for the few jobs available. I am not saying that you wouldn't be different and maybe actually be reliable, help customers, and increase sales thereby earning your pay. But you have to able to convince a store owner of this and then actually do it. Think like a business owner and figure out what you can offer that a bot can't that is a cost effective benefit to an employer. Anticipate their arguments against what you offer and be prepared to counter them. If you can't, then look at what skills & interests you do have other than looking pretty and wearing clothes then look for jobs that fit those skills and interests.
  15. I agree there are a lot of great skin creators out there. And i dont' think that anyone can say that the among the top quality ones there is one that is better than others. Take your time and explore all your options. Its essential that you get a good variety of demos and try them on with your shape. It is surprising how the way the shadows, highlights and coloring on each skin make you appear different. You will probably see skins you abosultely love but when you try them on they aren't the look you really are after. When i look for a new skin, i try on the 'natural' version of the skin (or the one with the least makup first) until i narrow my choices down to one or or a few that gives me the exact look I want. Then i consider the makeup choices, as i generally find that if i like the look the skin gives my avatar without makeup i generally like it better with makeup. I then choose the skin that gives me the most makeup options that look good on me.
  16. Can you see other particles just not those? See if there is a feature that turns them off and on and check to be sure they are on. .If so or if there is no option to turn them off, there may be a script problem. If you can't see other particles and your graphics setting particle count is high enough, look under the Advanced Menu>Rendering>Types. Make sure that particles are checked. If you don't have an Advanced menu on the menu bar, hit ctrl+alt+d to bring it up.
  17. These are the steps for getting a linden home. Be sure you followed them all and have received confirmation in your email. If you have, then you probably will need to submit a support ticket. Go to Linden Home registration and log in with your Second Life account and password. View the four themed communities and home options within each theme. Click on your preferred home image. Name your home. Read the Terms and Conditions. Check the box agreeing to the Linden Home Terms and Conditions. Click Submit. Review your Linden Home information on the confirmation page. Click Go to your Home or use the slurl provided Confirmation is sent to the email address you provided when you registered your SL account.
  18. You can't spend it in any way. This is a benefit that allows you to buy land on the mainland and not have to pay the normal monthly tier fee for the first 512sqm. So if you buy a 512 plot you have no tier. If you buy larger lot you pay only the amount of tier due once the amount of tier you pay on a 512 plot is deducted. The credit against tiers does NOT apply if you buy land on a private estate. The cost to buy land varies and is set by the current owner of the land. Sometimes that's Linden Lab, or other times its someone that owns land and wants to sell it. Think of tier as a property tax. It is your 'share' of the cost of maintaining the sim your land is on. You can join with other people that are premium members and buy any amount of land on the mainland and own it as a group by deeding it to a group you create for this purpose. Then each member of the group donates their 512 tier credit to the group. If enough members do this to cover the whole tier amount, then again, no tier fees are due on the parcel. The only way to turn this benefit to cash is to rent the land once you own it. BUT you have to BUY the land first using your own money ($L's). So you won't really make a profit on it until you collect enough rent to cover your initial cost. Of course if you later end up selling the land and are able to get the same amount or more than you paid for it, this would be profit too. However don't count on that. You may end up having to sell it for LESS than you paid for it depending on the demand and market conditions at the time you sell it, which you cannot predict now with any certainty.
  19. You have summed up my feelings in a nutshell. Today I inspected a 7 prim mesh object that used 317 prims up on the land when it was rezzed out! The item really didn't look any better than the same thing made of sculpts, actually not as good because it was a motorcycle that had no "shine" on the metal surfaces, so the 'paint' looked fake. A sculpted motorcycle that looked better only used up 32 prims.
  20. @ Charlar Linden RE: " I can't speak to people who continue to ride horses down Main St. and curse at the those horseless carriages swerving around them." Putting aside the rampant dissatisfaction with Second LIfe viewers by a large segment of residents, a lot of people simply can't run V3 because their computer is not capable of it and they can't afford a new one right now. So should all these people, just stop paying their tiers, paying for their memberships, ie: stop spending money with LL and content creators and leave Second Life now ? When new technology is introduced in real life, companies continue to try to accommodate their customers who are not in a position to adapt it immediately until such time as the technology becomes not only more affordable but is adapted across the board. Why can't LL do the same? Your comment is just another example of the bad attitude I've noted toward customer service.
  21. I have a long friends list that includes both business contacts, acquaintances and people I consider true friends. Other than for business reasons, I won't accept a random friend request. If someone can't take the time to let me get to know them a bit before offering then I turn down the request and tell them why. Its just common curtesy not to offer randomly in my opinion. If I accept, they are aquaintences at first. I clean out my friends list about every six months. If i don't it just gets way too long. I also will delete them on the spot for reasons 1-4. To be fair, I have these 'rules' in my profile for all to read. Here's why I delete them: 1. Spam, random tp's, acquaintances random group join requests or other bs 2. People who friend me just to get me to their club or gig etc. 3. If they commit a grevious offense 4. I make my RL living in SL. If I don't answer a non business IM immediately because I am working and can't - then they get offended by it too often after i have explained this to them. 5.If we don't keep in contact. The length of time being proportionate to how long i've known them. I am not shy about telling them why they were deleted if asked either. But mostly they know.
  22. Sorry to tell you but unless you can locate the group owner and they cooperate in returning the parcel to you your out of luck. UNLESS there are officers in the group with the authority to sell the land and they cooperate. You can look in the group info under roles to see who has what authrity in the group. If not, I'd IM the group owner in case his IM's go to his email and notecard him too so he'll be sure to get your message when he logs in. If this land is mainland or linden land and If the group owner won't cooperate take back your tier contribution. If its on a private estate maybe the estate owner will help you out. They can reposses the land and give it back to you if they think its justified and probably have a record of its location.
  23. Haven, I do not like and will not use the SL V3. I have tried it. Its not because i don't like change, but because its not stable and the UI is horrible especially if your an advance user. I will more than be happy to use a viewer that is acceptable when one becomes available. Most of my friends feel the same way. And as pointed out in an earlier post, not everyone can run V3 because they can't afford to upgrade their computers. Fortunately I have a brand new computer that is more than capable of running it but a great many of the people I know who tried it can't. This is another reason I probably won't jump into mesh clothes. Since the majority of people can't see them correctly.
  24. I always have to mod the clothing I buy because my avi is smaller than average all the way around. I'm very particular about fit and won't wear any clothes that don't fit perfectly. I don't even like resize scripts because they only make things larger or smaller. If your avi is small and slender your sol with most resize scripts unless you can adjust everything on xyz axis. Even that's a pain since being a builder I can mod things better and faster using edit tools. Sizes aren't going to cut it with me either. I made my own shape and doubt any 'size' is going to fit like clothes I can completely mod. I refuse to have to buy or mod my shape just to fit clothes either. I took a long time with my avi so it looks attractive and like a real body not some fantasy pinup. Why would i buy a shape that makes me look like hundreds of other avi's? IF I can find mesh clothes that actually fit me right then I would buy them. But i don't see that happening anytime soon, and i'm not going to spend hundreds of lindens buying clothes only to find they don't fit because then they are worthless to me.
