  1. Hello everyone,

Recently, I thought of a new business idea but I'm not sure if it will be as awesome as it is in my head...
I've never been a business owner (save for having a shop at some point) so it will be an entirely new experience for me.

Thinking of all the things I have to do, I figured needing some land would be one of those steps.

Now I know that land isn't free... but I figured it doesn't hurt to ask.

As such, here's my question: Is there anyone out there with some unused land, that they would want to give up for me to try out my new business? It will be event-driven (no club, no adult theme) and I assume it will not take up boatloads of prims.
Any propositions including getting a cut of the proceeds or getting rent after the business proves to be worthwhile are definitely a possibility!

I hope there's someone out there who'd like to help me out... it was worth a try :)

  5. Hey guys,

As we all know, notecard spamming isn't fun... though sometimes you did subscribe for something.

Lately however, I find that, as a DJ, I get a lot of notecard spam from ATM's in-world who, apparently, spam groups (in my case DJ groups) with stuff like cheap streams and such. Trouble is, I didn't ask for it... and it's starting to happen more often.

I was wondering if there is anything we can do about it. Naturally one can block the said ATM... but they'll know you do and just use a new one (apparently). It's not a huge issue but it's just annoying. I'm not sure if it's against TOS or anything, but is there anything else I / we can do other than keep blocking and deleting this stuff?

  7. Your post openly invites people to make fun of it... I'll be social, this time *chuckle*

If you are looking for a job in second life, consider what you want to do! "Just any job" doesn't work... you can't apply for -all- jobs at a jobcenter in real life either, can you?

    Ask youself these things:

    - Is there any special skill I have? (DJ'ing, photoshop, building, etc)
    - Is there any special skill I do not yet have but wish to learn?
    - Do I want to be my own boss, or do I want to work for someone else?

Beside that, a good profile, nice looking avatar and some social skills help at any job.

Next, go and look in SL for places that suit the type of job you wish to do... want to become a builder? Have a look around at other people's businesses that do professional building... want to host? Have a look at the more famous clubs of SL.

The best way to apply for a job, if you don't want to start for yourself, is to go to a club / office / place and ask a staffmember for an application form.

Do remember: the prospect of earning some lindendollars might be interesting, but just like in RL... if you don't love what you're doing, you won't do it well... and your "boss" will see :)

    Best of luck!

  8. Wow... I don't check on the topic for a couple of days and bam... this many replies O_o

I hope I didn't stir up more than I wished...

I took the image down btw... I had a feeling of being a little rebellous, if only because someone sending such a notecard is a plain jackass in my eyes... but in the end I highly agree with most of the posts here; it's just not worth the drama :)

I saw someone ask what the name of said previous club was where the image came from. Even though I would like to share that as a sort of backstab to said jackass, I'll choose to be the wiser one and not share it.

Once again: Thanks everyone for all replies... very informative to read and certainly worth remembering for the future!

  9. Hey everyone,

I was wondering... back in the day we used to have a couple of dedicated-to-SL radio stations... I did a little search but it seems most (all?) of them have gone... are there still true SL radio stations out there that you know of? :)

  10. Thanks for the feedback all.

The image was to be replaced when we would have the time for it.. I do agree with all that's been said regarding this shouldn't be an issue. I really do. As I said, I also just wanted to read up a little on legislation just to be sure for anything in the future. I tend not to unlawfully copy other people's creations, but accidents happen and I was just a little startled at this, especially since I do not know a thing or two about US legislation.

Learned some new things today, thanks for that. I think that, for the sake of not wasting too much time on this, I'll just kick the image off. :)

    Thanks again!

  11. @ Trinity: I agree to the fullest tbh, and as I stated earlier, even out of common courtesy I would... I'm an artist in SL too so I can understand the situation from an artistic point of view. However, as I also stated, this is about more than just (alleged) copyright infringement... I think I'll decide to remove the image but I just want to learn a little about this, too. It's good to have some basic knowledge.

One more question if I may: since I am the uploader, but did this "in assignment for" my friend, are we both target for a possible DMCA, or just me or just her?

  12. Thanks for the reply.

I heard about the club "struggles" just a little while ago, hence I didn't know it would become a big deal.

Just making sure: there were no usage terms agreed to when the image was transferred to her. Beside that, I am a third-party. Am I correct to understand that the original image -can- be used then (in original format, to be sure) ?

  13. Hello everyone :)

I got a notecard today about something and I'm not entirely sure what to do with it. The situation is as follows:

A friend of mine has a DJ poster she used when she worked at club "X". This poster was made by, I believe, one of the people that work at said club. She left there after some time and has now opened her own club. I'm helping her out setting up some things. One of those things is an online-offline board. She wanted to use the poster (well-done quality tbh), but it had the previous club's name at the bottom. She gave the picture (full permissions) to me and I cut off the little part before uploading it and putting it into the board.

Today, I got a really well-copied piece of legal yadda about US law / copyright infringement / 5 days notice / 50$ fine / etcetra. I was a little startled about it, seeing as A) It's not my picture, and B) I got this picture full permissions.

What I happen to know is that this club she left has not-so-warm feelings towards her for setting up a new club. I am presumtious and call it one way to just annoy the hell out of her... however, I am not a US citizen and my legal knowledge isn't exactly perfect, especially on US legislation.

I am wondering: is this legal note valid? She did own the picture full-permission, regardless of who it made. I might be able to understand that cutting the picture is something the original creator wouldn't like, but still one would think that one can use the picture seeing as it is full perm.

In my mind, I now have three options:

    - Leave the situation as-is. I'm not sure if this is a good idea if the legal note is actually valid.
    - Use the original image instead and stretch it up a little on the prim. One would think this is legal, but still.
    - Delete images and give this guy what he wants. If all else fails I have no problem with this, but I just -know- this isn't an issue of copyright for him, but an issue of trying to hit my friend where it hurts with any measure possible.

Could anyone give me advice on the situation? Normally I would just delete the pic, even for the sake of common courtesy, but because of the history between my friend and xlub "X", I'm willing to learn if he is in his right to do this.

    Thanks in advance!

  14. Hey everyone,

I'm not sure wether or not the title points out an already existing day, but if not, I am starting one (for myself at least) today!

I am rather happy and I have a couple of friends on SL. It never hurts to meet new, interesting people and with that particular mindset, I am writing this post.

Beside conducting business and doing stuff (for me, that would be DJ'ing and running my DJ School), I love chatting with people. Call it obvious, but to me, Second Life is an awesome platform to learn about, talk with, and have some fun with other cultures and people. Seeing as I live in The Netherlands, most people I meet aren't Dutch (though a lot of them are, shockingly, haha). I just have a love for a lot of the different people out there and there's almost always some common ground to be found. It's exactly that social interaction I've grown to love about Second Life in the time I've spent on the Grid.

While this isn't a literal "please be my friend" request (and, to make sure no one takes offense to that; I do support threads like that!), I'm just curious as to what sort of people might subscribe to, or agree with my viewpoint. Obviously, if you would want to be friends, an invitiation is always welcome.

So, without further ado, let it be known that today is my Make-a-friend day, and you're invited! :D

    Be my friend? ^_^

There´s probably a better way, but I would try something like below to turn one prim at a time invisible:
    integer prim;default{    touch_start(integer num_detected)    {        llSetTimerEvent(0.1);        prim = 1;    }     timer()    {        llSetTimerEvent(1.0);        llSetLinkAlpha(prim, 0.0, ALL_SIDES);        integer i = 1;        do {            if (i != prim) llSetLinkAlpha(i, 1.0, ALL_SIDES);        }        while (++i < 4);        ++prim;        if (prim == 5) llSetTimerEvent(0.0);    }}

I´m hoping somebody else knows a more elegant way.

Been breaking my head on this for a little while, but I think this is the most approachable solution. There is 'something' with the llSetTimerEvent that gets dodgey if we'd incorporate Jack's method... not sure what. I'd pick your solution, Ron :)

  16. Music of all kinds, Reading (mainly romance novels), Computer Games (RPG, Adventure types), TV Shows (to many to list LOL) and of course Family and Friends.

Save for a few additional topics, that does pretty much sum up Second Life! So welcome, and I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy your time spent around here. *raises glass* :)

  17. Hey "Hannah" :),

They're not frustrations but care, so no worries... I feel confident that DJ Schools can coexist as they have done in the past time between Forever and me, for example. It's all about the approach and the mind-set of DJ School owners, I reckon. It's good to have a look and see if other people who start up a school hold the same values high. After all, as you state, it's not about profit but about giving someone that experience of being a DJ. We've all been there, right?

You are however saying that copying is okay, no matter how you state it, which makes me feel a little sad. Forever did not copy but bought a name, group, and school. The fact that that school was copying in the first place might or might not be true (I was not there so who am I to judge), but that prior school was stopped and closed because of the school that ultimately moved to Forever's hand for a (large) sum of money. Seeing the old school emerge from the dust is a dagger in the back of Forever... and with my eyes on 'fair play', I, once again, think that is a little sad.

A little sidetrail: From what I recall when you worked with me at the Premiere DJ Academy, you hadn't DJ'ed a day in your life beside SL. Rosalie however told me she had DJ'ed for 11 years (so, at this moment, that'd be 12). I don't wish to point fongers, but that too is coincedental. Just like buying a name from someone but not getting the group. And getting Rosalie to make you new videos... but once again, I am probably wrong, right? Yeah.

Also, I do wonder who you would need Rosalie to make you those videos. You are starting up the biggest, most well known DJ school again... as a teacher you should know how to handle making a video, right? I would reckon so.

I think you know very well that, while the method of using youtube videos isn't copyrighted as is, but the fact remains that Forever is currently using videos to teach. I chose not to, for the sake of fair competition. She uses youtube and so I do not... I would feel bad to steal someone's idea like that... it's not really a matter of copyright. But, as you said, to each school their own, eh?

I am however glad with your final statement; it is indeed not about profit but about teaching. The times are slow in SL, especially when you look at the amount of people willing to pay for DJ lessons. I don't turn a nice profit currently, but I keep afloat and enjoy my time put in it... as does Forever. I do hope your words hold truth and you indeed plan to co-exist in SL rather than trying to be top dog. You understand that, if you'd pursue that goal, your words would hold little value, right?

I look forward to see your strategies :)

    Best wishes,

    Xilion

  18. I'll drop the ball, Hannah... the way you introduce the courses, the way you seek for DJ's, the fact that you "bought" a group that has in fact been renamed and resold to someone else... and adding to that copying the exact same style of teaching (youtube videos) that the Premiere Academy did is just wrong in my eyes.

Don't get me wrong, I'd welcome any DJ school with semi-open arms (competition is competition, but if all goes fair I'm up for it... sames goes with Forever Vyper and me, currently, seeing as we are eachothers competitiors)... it's just that the way you indtroduce yourself is a little overwhelming. Especially seeing as the old name has been sold and given up.

...the fact that the old group remained is solely because you cannot erease a group. If your intentions are truely ethical, then it;s Rosalie who is wronging either you or Forever. I don't see how it will affect me tbh as my style of teaching is far different that the Premiere Academy or CSU (not better, just different), but I find it unfair for Forever.

Adding to that the fact that you know your info about my style of teaching, and the fact that friends of mine have spotted you taking ample time in inquiring what the school is about, what a lesson plan contains, etc.. (as if trying to act like a student while you are actually just fishing for info on how your competitors are handling themselves), I think you're bad news for the DJ School world. Perhaps you are not in which case I will apologize for my tone in the most sincere way I can, but I think that any two-bit resident agrees with me that this is a little fishy.
