Mesh goes gridwide: Create, sell, buy & enjoy all-new things in SL
A group blog by Secondlife in General
Honestly, its a great technology, but not everyone can see it, and so far the choices of viewers to see it are limited. When there is a viewer that pretty much everyone can use and see meshes. I have no real problems with Kirsten's except the fact that the inventory pauses with each item selection, same issue with LL's viewer, oh and wearing aves makes the viewer sluggish.

Hehehe, you have quite a journey ahead of ya, there is a LOT of things out there. Some rather creative things, some incredibly weird.
-
And that is why you lock your facebook account down, or make an alt, I would never mix up my SL one with my main.
-
I have seen a few changes over the years , but one thing that has remained consistent is the ability to create your own ave as you want it and not have to be some kind of cookie cutter garbage, or anything for that matter, vehicles, pets, etc. How this is done has changed a bit, say when they introduced sculpts, or before I was even on they did not have the whole animation override going a long time ago (as someone told me), and in the future they will introduce meshes to the main grid. I seriously doubt Rod has plans to totally alter the way SL works. Some changes, probably, but probably nothing drastic, aside fixing the things that are really broken (being hopeful ) and maybe working out some of the bugs in viewer 2 (I want properties and profiles in seperate windows, all in one gets a little annoying, or make it an option).
I'm pretty sure Rod is well aware that SL != The Sims and that making it like that would drive people away from SL more then the issues it already has.
-
To make SL like a goal oriented game you would have to add a few things that allow it to be that way, something built in, and I don't think very many people would care to use it. Besides, we have enough scripted games of all sorts in SL anyway, though I will always prefer the whole building and ave making.

Sounds much like that ban link thing, people abuse it and it affects the whole system, honestly I think its better that sim owners manage their bans not some system.

Welcome to SL Rod, and good luck.
Here is hoping for improvments in technology, and remember freedom of expression is what makes SL what it is.

While we're at it, lets roll back the economy to when it was better.

Try Out the New Viewer 2.4 Beta, Now Available
A group blog by Secondlife in General
Nearly 5 years of SL I have seen the viewer change before, not this drastically, but still.
I am on this viewer right now and well, its not as horrible as I keep seeing the comments say. Also, the sidebars tabs can be undocked and kept as windows which can be minimized. I would like them to be buttons on the bottom too, maybe in later versions, who knows.
I would also like properties of objects and profiles of people in their own window. Cannot think of anything really critical, oh, and selecting items or folders in inventory, if I scroll down, sometimes it snaps right back up again, but that could be a setting I have not found.

Yeah, you never know if "trowing" snowballs in a region with over 50 people will be "exiting".

While viewer 2 has a lot of nice features, it has a lot of things that still need tweaking, they did separate the sidebar, and a few other things, if they allowed profiles and properties of items and scripts their own windows (better yet, allow the user to choose) it would be fine. I'm thinking by the time they actually put the old viewer code into obsolescence we'll be on 2.3, or something like that. Though I am pretty sure it is possible to make a third party viewer that looks and feels like the original.

antialiasing is broken, jagged edges and other crap, if I enable the crappy anti aliesing the name vanishes on all aves. This is still beta as far as I am concerned. Heck, even the beta did not have that issue if I left it alone, and the edges were already smoothed.

*reads a few entries above*
You don't need to be a game designer or someone who is taking classes to be a good at it, just willing to learn and spend time playing around with it, at least as far as SL ave or structure making goes. There are more then enough tutorials and resources out there.
Also, you can do most things in Blender that you could with Maya or any other application related, its just a little different. I mean, they have made animated short films in blender.
I have not learned everything in it, but I learn new things everyday.

I have not done basic prims builds since the creation of sculpts, this will be no different really, created a whole bunch of them in beta, even part of a rigged mesh, all done with blender which is free, people panic about everything.

With the display names I do have some concern that if someone does decided to use an existing name of someone they don't like to cause trouble and a noob reports it as the display name, would that cause problems, or will you only accept official ARs by clicking said person or require a snapshot instead of just banning someone just on multiple phony ARs so that there is no probability for confusion?
Granted this kind of abuse of the AR thing has existed already where you have a mass of griefers ARing one person.
This really does not change a thing as I thin LL is anticipating people trying to impersonate others.

Ok, rigged mehses are not hard at all, would be nice to make the body a little bigger via bone manipulation. Still, kinda cool to have a body made of moving texture.
I do wonder though, vehicles, I know that you are limited in the number of prims for an object ot be physical, will there be a limitation in the complexity whether it can be a physical prim, would be kinda cool to have an airship or aircraft.
-
I think I have figured out most of it so far, still have yet to figure out mapping of textures to a compound mesh, or rigged mesh aves. Really wanna play with bone scaling.
-
Hmm, I wonder if there will be any bone mesh templates avalable for blender by then, or maybe I can use the one they already have avalable at domino designes.

Welcoming Teen Grid Organizations to the Main Grid

Its not like kids have not snuck into the grid before. If I find one out I report immediatly and they go poof. Though most of the places I go are island sims, I rarely touch the mainland.

Blender really is a great program, a tad akward, but a lot of capabilities, and free. And it would be nice to have something with a little more detail then 64x64 or 128x128.
-
I have used blender for a while to make sculpts and always found it a little annoying how limiting it was as far as the detail in the shape goes, so it will probably be like a very high detailed prim, though I am concerned about customers retexturing as I know a lot of people like to customize. What I don't know how to do yet is the ave mesh itself, but I am sure I can learn. Just hope they don't limit this to premium accounts only, everyone should take a stab at it.
Of course, LL still has to get it working, and people have to be on a type of 2.0+ viewer to see it I think, so.....it could be a while.
I wonder if you will be able to stretch the ave mesh out, that would eliminate the need for those buggy deform animations that I see so many using.
-
One major issue is modding aves, a lot people love modding things, but I guess we'll see. There will still be things a mesh cannot do, but I am sure it will allow some new things that could not be done before. There are a lot of aves that don't even have a human shape at all, so you would still need them to do that, I'm thinking more for body shapes you could not get with the standard body editing. Time will tell.
