  1. Bitcoin mining hasn't been done on GPU's since 2012, what you're likely referring to is Cryptocurrency mining. As in they mine other cryptocurrencies with them and buy Bitcoin with those alternate cryptocurrencies. Also the GPU's are not being bought up by miners specifically. It's the Scalpers. They buy up all the GPU's from online stores with bots and then resell them at $100-$200+ over MSRP. This is why it's difficult to get a GPU right now. Miners are not the problem. It's scalpers.
  2. Quite honestly Invisiprims were a glitchy bug and should have never been relied on as a feature by any creator in SL, much like how Z-fighting shouldn't be relied on as a feature. Creators paint themselves into a corner when they use bugs or glitches as features in their creations. It's bad practice. It's also a bad design decision and I would avoid any creator in SL that uses such techniques. Why? Because such glitches and bugs eventually get fixed. Sure some of them are useful. E.G. Back in the beta days of Minecraft the minecart accleration bug. But eventually it was fixed and people complained but Mojang was smart enough to put something in to match with the removal of the bug and that was redstone tracks. Think of the alpha-layer thing as a fix for the removal of Invisiprim. I know it's not exactly perfect but it's a better/safer alternative than relying on a glitch for a feature.

Melville, I tried opening my account to another computer and was relieved that i'm able to log in though i tried opening again to my main computer but it's still logging me out, I guess I'll try to reformat my computer since my brother told me it has a virus XO Thanks so much for the help, I'll post the result after reformatting my computer If you receive a login failure message stating that "The system is logging you out...," try waiting a few minutes before logging in again. If you continue to receive this message, you may be a victim of "stuck presence," which can be fixed by restarting the region in which your avatar is stuck. You will have to file a support ticket with LL to get the region restarted if you cannot contact the owner of the region you are in. If you are a Premium Resident you can usually file a live chat and a Linden will restart the region immediately. I've had this happen to me before.
  4. Jessicka Graves wrote: I just downloaded the linked Project Viewer and I can't seem to find any CHUI. Everything looks as normal as V3 gets, and there doesn't appear to be any option to bundle everything together into one floater or whatever. Everything is still separated, and I hope it stays that way with only the option of squishing everything into one window if people want to. It sounds like a clunky/overly condensed way of handling chat/communication, and from what I can imagine, it's a devolvement of the current floaters used in the V3 hud (which are devolved from V1 floaters). You haven't been able to use it but you are going to pass judgement on it anyways. Nice logic. If you're going to provide feedback on CHUI at least make an effort to actually use it. Don't be kainotophobic. It may sound clunky to you or overly-simplistic but until you've used it you won't know.
  5. Don't think for a moment just because you live outside the US you're immune to SOPA/PIPA/ACTA. SOPA alone gives the RIAA and MPAA the power to extradite you and detain you for trial. They extradited a kid from england so they could sue him into oblivion before. I'm sure they will exercise that powere even more once SOPA passes. Watch this video allt h e way through and it'll explain everything. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJIuYgIvKsc&feature=channel_video_title
  6. The Collada Exporter in 3DsMax 2012 seems to be working fine for me without the need to mess with the FBX converter. There is still the problem with textures needing to be uploaded seperately but it's not a big deal. As long as you have the UV Map baked in, the textures should show up just fine on your model when applied through SL.
  7. Both ATi and Nvidia cards have performance issues in SL because SL lacks a fullscreen function needed to enable said video cards full GPU power. When you play SL in a windowed mode it only uses about less than half of your cards capability. And it also uses your system Ram instead of your GPU's ram. This is why you see your system ram being utilized more by SL because the GPU scales down performace for windowed apps. This is also why SL appears to "lag" in areas with lots of objects and avatars. I tested this in V1 viewers where running them fullscreen would cause my GPU to crank up to it's full Core and Memory clocks and got a 80% performace increase. When ran as a windowed application my GPU's core and memory clocks would drop down to the lowest speed as if they weren't in use at all. The same thing happens on nVidia cards. My friend ran the same test and found out that SL wasn't using the GPU's full core and memory speeds when windowed. Only when In fullscreen did he see full clock speeds in both memory and core and SL ran smoother. You can use an application like MSI Afterburner (runs on both nVidia and ATi cards) to test this yourself. MSI Afterburner Site
  8. Good for you, you think it sucks, don't use it. No need to post this garbage really. You could have gone all through life without having to. As for me like the new V3. It's a compromise between old and new. You can move the buttons where you need them. You can have them at the bottom like V1. And the IMs and Notifications are back up in the upper right corner. You know the corner the same you people bitched about NOT having their Announcements. So LL moved them back to the OLD position and now you people bitch they're not where you're used to seeing them. *eyeroll* But I guess that what LL gets for trying to please un-statisfiable dimwits.
  9. With discussion of NPC's and such for the game down the road, and the fact that the foundation of their new CEO is as a game builder, I see some significant changes which make financial sense. WoW has 14,000,000 members paying $12-$15 a month. They introduce a charity pet and they make millions for that charity. The money is in the games not the worlds. Mindcraft is also a huge success and it is a game builder. When I posted about NPC's in the key-framed animation discussion. It was meant to be for content creators in SL who build game systems within SL it has no backing by LL at all. Though that doesn't mean LL couln't make their own content. The whole key-frame discussion is about content creators being able to create "believeable" interactive NPC's for their in-world games without having to dedicate local machine resources to running tertiary clients. But that's just one possibility of key-framed meshes. It also means vehicles can have moving mesh wheels that are part of the main model without using cylinder or the super-vertex-heavy and lag inducing torii. Or in some cases a whole seperate mesh. In any case. This is just tip of the iceberg. Mesh will continue to be developed and mesh-specific features will be added further down the road.
  10. With keyframing you can sort of mimic flexible path prims. However you're restricted to the key-framed mesh animations. In other words factors like gravity and wind won't have any effect on them.
  11. A good practice would be to backup your .dae files to some form of small portable media like a USB flash drive or your cell\smartphone (they can be used as a removeable HD)
  12. From my perspective i'll give you the answer: Meshes are easier to work with than sculpts. Sorry but it's the truth. I'm a 3D modeller have been since 3D Studio Max 1.0 when it was a Dos 6.22 program. I know my way around meshes and really can't wrap my head around sculpts. they're fiddly and making a mistake on one means having to re-upload the damn thing 20x which to me costs more than importing a single mesh. Sculpts were never meant to have hard edges they're nurbs in their basic form. Meshes were. I can add and subtract faces and edges from a mesh. I can't do that with a sculpt. To sum it up: Sculpted prim = Kludge Mesh = Next logical step
  13. Real NPC characters in SL RPG's. Vehicles with moving parts. Windows on houses that actually move etc. Your avatar's animations are keyframed for example. I hope Normal mapping is next on the list of mesh features being added. I'd love to make complex meshes that don't need extra vertices and faces to look good.
  14. I'm using the Beta 3.0.1 (238613) viewer which is the same build as Release and not experiencing these issues. Are you sure you did re-adjust your bandwidth slider after you installed the new viewer to make sure you're not accidently bottlenecking? Don't listen to the idiots who think you're stealing bandwidth with the slider, Put it to about max your connection speed and see if you get any results.
  15. I use Revo Uninstaller for removing SL viewers. Works a lot better than just the built-in Uninstall. I was able to install 3.0.1 with no problems on windows 7 x64 Ultimate. Viewer runs fine, no issues. Reads like your problem may be something else with your system not Windows 7
  16. I say either Maya or Max, of course I get both for free through my school so I don' thave to pay for em and I've used both to make characters at one point or another. I have to say though I like the bones in Max better but only because that was the first 3D tool I learned back in the day when 3DS was a dos program.
  17. Sometime near the end of August is the best guess you're going to get right now. They're rolling it out across the grid on LeTigre and Magnum sims now. If you want to jump in and get a head start. Join the Mesh Volunteers group then go to your SL account and make sure you're PIOF and you've passed the Mesh tutorial. Then in-world log into one of the Mesh Sandboxes or Search Mesh Sandbox 0 on your map. Teleport there and enjoy.
  18. I uploaded a 8 vert cube that only had 2 tri's per side and it was still 2 prims worth. You can't get any more optimized than that with a cube. Compare that to SL's default cube prim that has 64 verts and I dunno how many tri's and it's worth only 1 prim. The whole double cost thing is because certain people think it's unfair for us to be able to upload higher-quality low-lag models in SL and sell them for far cheaper than their 2048 prim parcel-eating L$4500 monstrosity. The whole point of Mesh was to reduce the amount of prim-usage on sims but this is cancelled out by tthe PE.
  19. You can thank the anit-mesh crowd for this, they screamed that mesh would give us an unfair advantage over prim builders so LL made Mesh cost twice as much in PE as a regular prim. Which totally defeats the purpose of implementing mesh in the first place: To give us more room on our parcels so we can have better decorated houses and more detailed builds. but hey I guess the anti-mesh people don't want fully furnished houses and cars that don't look like a box on wheels.
  20. I have had very few problems exporting meshes from Max directly to .dae files. I use the built-in AutoDesk Collada exporter, since the OpenCollada and FeelingSoftware exporters each have one problem or another (such as screwed up uv mapping). The built-in exporter doesn't properly export the textures, which have to be uploaded and applied manually in-world, but other than that it works fine with pretty much default settings The only setting I had to change in 3D Studio Max 2011 withthe collada exporter was that the "Up" Axis is Z Oh and switch the measuring units to "meters" to get more accurate sizes going from Max to SL.
  21. your first day sounds a lot like my first day in minecraft LOL Except Minecraft doesn't have mailboxes...yet. >.> /me sneaks off to the Minecraft suggestions forum. Also I love how people here in SL are against it turning into a social network site but then a few weeks later they're urging the new CEO to sign up for Twitter and Plurk? Hmm.
  22. @Ryuu buddy if you're spending $4K on a PC then you're doing it wrong, all you need to do is spend $200 on a new Graphics Card to run SL in Ultra, and I don't mean a cheap-o no-name card, get a XFX GeForce GTX 480 or something equivalent. XFX's cards come with double-lifetime warranties (register the card on their site to activate it). So if anything happens to the card, you're covered. Just because someone can't run SL on Ultra (and should really be using Medium settings, your PC isn't that bad ass, sorry) doesn't mean the fancy eye candy in SL is bad. Try dialing back your settings to about medium and also; Telling LL to get rid of features that use the GPU instead of the CPU for processing isn't going to win you any friends, especially animators and avatar creators. SL graphics aren't the problem, it's the users hardware. UPGRADE THE GPU. P.S. Ultra setting isn't there for everyone with a computer to use, it's there for people who actually HAVE the hardware (like myeslf) to enable those features.
  23. Yeah you go and camp ANWR on the live grid, the rest of us will be on the beta grid testing mesh import and having fun.
  24. However, we do agree that it's remarkable that LL would actually link to the "Deal With It" video on their corporate site. What the heck could they be thinking? It sends the wrong message to be coming from the SL web site... It does show a pretty typical attitude of LL to not consider the consequences of what they put out there. Context counts for a lot in this instance. Aside from quality engineering and management, one thing LL could use a lot of is a decent PR overseer. Ok for the last time, I'm not going to say it again, That video was done as a GAG video, LL nor the creators of the said video believe the "deal with it" part, it was done as a light-hearted Jab. Hence the funny voices and the plot of the script. You people seem to take a joke way too far. The video doesn't single any one person out, it was a coinincidence that it correlated with the blog post, so I linked to to it because I thought it was funny and wanted to share it with people for a good laugh, hence why I tacked on a smiley face. I put that there so people would know I wasn't being serious. In fact if you actually GO to the Official SecondLife youtube channel that video isn't even there. Again, it was meant as a joke. Sorry you all got offended by it, now build a prim bridge and get over it. Cheers. P.S. Here's a real video on mesh avatar rigging. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1STH6Qy4fik I'll admit it's not the best example of rigging but it's better than what I could do.
  25. Your post demonstrates a complete lack of being able to take a joke. the video I linked up was meant to be taken light-hearted. It wasn't anything serious. Do I care about the "deal with it" part? Not really, I though it was funny because it correlates with the discussion posted on this blog topic. You and Prok and Viv are getting all uptight about something so trivial as mesh import, when it goes live it'll be just like sculpties, only faster and everyone will forget about it, then LL will introduce normal mapping for textures and we'll be here again arguing and pitching a fit about it, the same 3 people will fear monger and run around SL like chicken little. Then it'll be on the live grid and again people will forget about it. And the cycle continues. By the way LL does not endorse that video. They didn't pay Reed or anyone else at Castle Productions for it. And the real people that need to "Get over it" Anne are the people who are scared that mesh is going to wreck SL. Ya know like sculpties and windlight and flexies did...Oh wait. Ah well BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
