I've been troubleshooting my system for 3 or 4 days now. Various viewers old and new would get to the VFS initialization, and then crash. Only the title bar of the login screen was drawn. In the log files, the last entry before the exception handler started was the line giving the OpenGl version, so I spent a lot of time tinkering with drivers and updates. I did numerous clean reinstalls of viewer and display driver ( XP pro SP3 with an nvidia 9800GT, not that it matters. ) Nothing worked. And all the viewers I tried failed at the same spot. The clue that let me fix it came when I searched on that last line. This led me to a log file that showed what the next line should have been. Joystick initialization. I use a 3DConnexion Space Navigator with SL. Love it. It makes many things a great deal more intuitive in the game. However, if it gets unplugged somehow, the view will fail to progress past the OpenGl version message. Over and over and over again... Posted to hopefully save someone else the trouble.
