  1. regarding the paypal question - if you're in a country that you're allowed to use SL at all, setting up paypal should be valid.

You say that paypal is requiring a credit card. I'll talk further with our billing team, but obviously if paypal has some rule there's very little we can do about that. If it's operating differently under SL than other cases, please file a ticket so we can learn why.

As for billing info being required, I think other posters have explained the reasoning quite well (which makes me happy :-)).

  2. I'll publish some numbers on mesh uptake - primarily how many regions have mesh rezzed on them, and overall mesh sales on the marketplace.

In my entirely unbiased opinion, I think mesh is being adopted at an amazing rate, given that it required a change/upgrade in viewer to see.

  3. If you think something is broken, it's usually best to first ask here, and then file a ticket if you get confirmation.

If you have questions about how something works, why something seems illogical, or why some functionality seems to be missing, it's also good to post here.

As Arton said, the creators who watch this forum are highly knowledgable of the ins-and-outs of mesh development. They're also thoughtful and professional.

We Lindens do watch the forums and respond when we think it can be helpful (or when I get a chance to mock the viewer 1.x luddites). We also watch for indications of what we should be focusing on. This leads me to...

I understand that we don't have good workflow documentation, or best practices. I can say that we won't be doing any doc for the 3rd party tools like Blender, Maya, 3ds, hexagon, etc. We don't have the expertise in-house for that. We would love to do some to cover the point from (for example), "where do I get my LoD and collision models" to "what object should be the primary one in a linkset, and what are the different collision types".

I'm currently discussing possible solutions to this with my documentation folk, and you'll be hearing more from me about this in the near future.

  4. hahaha - 'mighty America'.

I spend most of my days, and nights, talking with creators who are not in the US or Canada. We were concerned that the billing issue would be a significant limitation, but so far it has not. We have more registered for Mesh upload than my estimates. We also have significantly more adoption across the grid than I estimated.

  5. Although I sometimes enjoy the conspiracy theories that people create around LL actions, here are some facts why somethings are the way they are:

Tutorial - it's not a test. It's primarily focused on helping those residents who are unfamiliar with copyright law. Those who already know everything can be done in less than 5 minutes and the jackholes who simply steal don't care.

Why not add IP tutorial to image (texture, picture, sculpt) upload? - I would like to and we likely will at some point.

PIOF - oh, the horror of having billing info on file. It is a minimal request that actually does deter a certain class of copybotters (meaning specifically people stealing other SL creators content). Initial billing problems aside, I've heard surprising few complaints.

Mesh is great, and I'm a huge fan of it. Prims are great also (please no more prim cube protests!) ;-). It's critically important that we continue to have engaging in-world creation functionality. That's a core part of SL.

I love seeing what people build and how they do things we never expected. I've seen some beautiful builds in progress, and they're a mix of Mesh and Prims (I've made no secret of how I feel about sculpts).

Finally, thanks all for making these posts thoughtful and mature.

  6. Thanks everyone for discussing your ideas and desires here. Please do try to keep it focused on the idea of a Materials system, as it'll be easier for us to review it when the time comes.

As I said in the Usergroup, I can't make any promises as to when this project fits in our timeline. Currently we're focused on Stability and Quality; making SL work for more people more of the time.

    Cheers

  7. Wow, this was an active thread.

It took me a while to get through it all. I'll try to hit a few important points:

You can't compare different objects. Just because they have a similar number of triangles in the source application, doesn't mean their weights will be the same. If you'd like a more detailed explanation, send me the collada files for your two objects.

Create your own LoDs. This will give you complete control over how your object is perceived and will likely have a big impact on LI.

Create your own Physics shape - or - use linked prims for collision. Automated systems are no replacement for a craftsman who knows the intended use of an object.

Because LoD is based on relative size, creating one combined object allows you control the overall shape as it passes through the LoDs. Using multiple ones will mean that smaller parts will degrade earlier. It's a tradeoff.

We do read the forums, but obviously not every thread. Users, as you've seen, often know as much as we do.

Oh documentation. How I miss thee...

  8. Aditi is being unstable at the moment. You do not need to be a premium member to attend the content creation usergroup. We actually had reports of some Premiums being unable to get in.

We're going to move this to Agni to avoid the instability inherent in Aditi, and we're also going to widen the scope out to general Content Creation agenda items. I'll send more info out later in the week.

  9. ok, good.

If you want to report video card issues and see if any other residents have information, you should start a new thread - or better yet search for any existing conversations. If you do post something, please list your card, and driver version.

    thanks

  10. OK, if I'm reading your post correctly, it sounds like you are now on aditi looking to upload mesh.

If so, follow the directions - meaning the link, and review the IP tutorial again. There's no new info, but aditi is a separate instance than agni so it doesn't know you've already gone through it. Should take you just a few minutes to complete and then you should be able to upload on aditi.

  11. Thanks Siddean for that info.

I understand the interest, and passion in improving mesh based rigged clothing.

I hope we can find a way to get useful improvements in this area available for creators and residents while still making SL work more of the time for more of the people.
