  1. Aditi is unavailable intermittently due to a technical problem - in non-techy speak something on it fills up and has to be emptied manually by the Lindens for it to continue. They are working on putting in a better solution to this.
  2. Thanks Viewer - appreciate the info. :cathappy:
  3. Have you tried the 3.4.3 Beta Viewer? It is available from the downloads page as well. If the problem is still occurring in that release I suggest you file a JIRA with screenshots to illustrate.
  4. To clarify - there are now three new levels that your computer may be set to in addition to the old "Low", "Medium", or "High" graphics. These are: Ultra - the same as "High" but with "Lighting and Shadows" turned on. (Note: on many systems with poor graphics rendering this is a big performance hit) Ultra plus "Ambient Occlusion Enabled" (providing better shadows - more details here) Ultra plus "Ambient Occlusion Enabled" plus shadows set to "Sun/Moon + Projectors" - this is the maxxed out settings and if your gpu is up to it really makes SL look stunning. Hopefully this will improve many users enjoyment of SL - but please be aware of the performance costs that may occur.
  5. Mac Shoreman wrote: Does any one know where Linden Lab want me to put my note with experiences? They shure do not tell on the download page where they ask for feedback. It's anyone's guess - LL does not have a feedback form and the JIRA is for bugs and issues not so much "I like this but not that". I am still witing for the feedback questionairre that the CHUI team mentioned would be issued about a week after it was made available - and that was a month ago. I
  6. Thom Blauvelt wrote: I guess it can... sometimes... I also have a problem with my graphic card driver. The message i get is that the driver is either out of date or not been installed properly. I hav´nt been in sl since I got windows 8... why the hell did i sell my Windows 7 :-( Sometimes that happens when a driver fails to install correctly - try returning to the previous version and then reinstalling. Also google the name of your graphics card and 'Windows 8' to see if others are having problems.
  7. Have you tried logging in using a friend's connection or using a free wi-fi hotspot? It may be that your ISP is smoothing your usage and slowing or stopping large surges in data that are typical when teleporting.
  8. Before upgrading to Windows 8 it is wise to check that all the parts of your computer, gpu, touchpad etc. and attached devices e.g. printers have drivers available for Windows 8. Also a quick google with the name of your machine and 'Windows 8 upgrade' usually finds out if there has been any issues that others have had.
  9. With Viewer 3.4.3 Linden Lab have made extensive changes to the default level of graphic settings that the viewer is set to based on your graphics card - if you are interested to see what these are the table is contained in gpu_table.txt and is easy to read. Whilst there may be some improvements in the graphics systems in Viewer 3.4.3 some of the changes in that graphics table are a bit too extreme. The machine I am most regularly using at the moment uses a Nvidia 8600GT gpu - a 5 year old mid-range graphics card. With the new settings for that card as default I get lighting and shadows turned on! As good as that graphics card is there is no way that such a setting could be used for enjoyably moving around in SL no matter how good the rest of the computer's components are. My major concern is that many people will just click the 'rendering settings change' box not knowing what it really means then find that their Second Life is running slower for them and then become dissatisfied without knowing why - they may not even notice the graphical improvements if they are upset. I would like such a change to have been linked to a message at login to properly explain the changes and how to change them back, or to have given the option to try the new level of settings LL think is appropriate for your graphics card. Maybe such a change could be considered before Viewer 3.4.3 hits the main release channel.
  10. I a m not familiar with Singularity but it looks like you changed the object level of detail (LOD) as well. Are you just enabling basic shaders or are you changing graphics levels?

I have tried SL viewer (can't see anyone but myself; everyone else appear grey and the music only plays for a second and shuts off). I've tried Phoenix and Firestorm (I keep getting booted, still seeing grey people and similar problems with the music). I'm really frustrated because I paid a fortune for this laptop last night. 8 Gigs and all the bells and whistles; but I can't do the thing I enjoy doing most. Please help. I doubt this is a Windows 8 problem - I suggest you post yout machines's spec from the Help-> About Second Life menu as that may help in diagnosis.
  12. But that change was implemented and much discussed way back in February. All TPV makers abided by it (though the vague wording of 2k really means some new features have to be discussed with Oz to see if they conform). What has changed, or is about to change now?
  13. Phil Deakins wrote: I can't imagine that it had anything to do with banning a griefer - if the person really was a griefer, of course. It wouldn't make any sort of sense. It's more likely to be the simple expedient of cutting down on a costly salary, imo. This is the explanation that Oskar has said he himself was given (and yes, I'm sceptical of that as the true reason as well) - details over at the SLU thread, or see a copy of that statement in the blog entry referenced in the first post in this thread.
  14. Boudicca - as you seem to think that this Lucinda is very powerful maybe you could tell us the names of the other two Lindens that were sacked after IMing her.
  15. Lydia Craig wrote: Now for the real question is this restart going to be the vehicle for the implementation of the new thrid party viewer policy? Is there a new Third Party Viewer Policy? And also if there was wouldn't LL be more likely to tie that in to a Viewer release (3.4.1. should go live this week incidentally)?
  16. Peggy Paperdoll wrote: Oskar was fired? Link it. He has stated this on the SLU forum.
  17. You will find the answer to your problem in this thread - http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Second-Life-Viewer/Help-with-graphics-card-SL-is-pink/m-p/1674037
  18. Ensure that you are running Windows XP SP2 or SP3 - these are updated versionsof your operating system you would have it if you switched on automatic updating. If you are and you still have problems run the Windows System File Checker using sfc /scannow If you don't understand what I mean please ask someone who knows more about computers to help you.
  19. Over a week ago the 'CHUI Team' stated in their original blog post: Please think about these questions as you use the CHUI project viewer: Are the new features useful? Do the functions you commonly use seem more streamlined, or do they require more clicks than before? Are all of the functions, both old and new, easy to find? We’ll ask you to complete a survey in approximately one week to gather your thoughts on these questions. Has anyone seen any sign of this appearing?
  20. I just checked a few main channel sims and all were reporting as running 12.10.12.265813. Is this a numbering error or has there been a rollback Oskar?
  21. Are you on a RC release or the main server release? You can find out from looking under 'Help->About' or similar depending on viewer.
  22. Linden Lab have announced the CHUI Project Viewer. There are a lot of new features associated with handling all sorts of chats, including the merging of 'Nearby Chat' with the IMs if you want and plenty of other good stuff. Not everything is perfect, but this is an early release and the CHUI team is keen for our feedback. They say: We’ve been testing CHUI inside Linden Lab for some time, but any major redesign requires a lot of people using it to make it as smooth and useful as it can be. This is where you come in. Please think about these questions as you use the CHUI project viewer: Are the new features useful?Do the functions you commonly use seem more streamlined, or do they require more clicks than before? Are all of the functions, both old and new, easy to find? We’ll ask you to complete a survey in approximately one week to gather your thoughts on these questions. This is a very positive step - as is the opening up of their area of the JIRA. I will be giving them constructive feedback and I hope others will do the same.
  23. I have run SL using 3G on a USB stick thing in two countries. In both cases it ran fine. Remember that SL does not use a massive amount of bandwidth, especially after you have downloaded/cached a region. It is not great for doing lots of region hopping or shopping, but even decent sized clubs run fine with it. And if you are just pottering around your SL home you will rarely notice the difference. I found that once you have 1GB of bandwidth you are OK - and once connected SL will keep running, though not very well, right down to about 300K!
  24. I have a friend this happened to, and we tried everything that is listed as possible solutions, and then some - including replacing the router! Eventually it seems to have been fixed by a re-install of Windows 7 - I am thinking that there is something that messes up something in the way Windows 7 works with Second Life. I do wonder how many people just leave Second Life when they find it no longer works for them, yet other games do.
  25. I asked someone what was the difficulty in porting and the answer is that the existing viewer is built around the Intel x86 architecture. Because the chips used in tablets/phones use a very different base architecture (i.e. RISC) any viewer would have to be built differently from the ground up (different instruction sets and libraries) - and this is not an easy task. Incidentally, Lumiya runs vvery well on the Nexus 7.
