  1. You should be able to create the alpha layers by following a few of the tutorials here: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Clothing_Tutorials (since alpha layers are system layers and not specifically mesh related) The two first links on the page is for system/avatar templates in ps format. Then you should check a couple of tutorials on texture painting in Blender, which will show you how to texture paint in the avatar mesh to get the result you want. A few of these perhaps: http://search.yahoo.com/search?ei=utf-8&fr=aaplw&p=Blender+texture+painting+tutorial
  2. Great, Val! Thanks for posting the link. I wasn't aware of that jira. Probably because I couldn't be bothered to go searching for a jira.
  3. Unfortunately, the log you provided does not tell me much. It may be of more use to others, though. What might help is to (re)move the avatar specific folder from ~/Library/Application support/Second life/, and delete the content of ~/Library/Caches/secondlife/ and see if that helps. You can find some more suggestions in this thread: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Second-Life-Viewer/Major-SL-Issue-unexplained-crash-during-login/td-p/1647109 I assume you are using the latest version of the Linden viewer. I also think that being able to stay in for an hour before crashing sounds about right. I frequently crash after about that amount of time. Lastly, try what I suggested to someone else in this post - http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Second-Life-Viewer/Cannot-initiate-an-IM-conversation-most-of-the-times-or-receive/m-p/1651907#M16060 - which is a good idea even if it doesn't help with the crashing.
  4. I figure if others see the text still, they would either tell you (if they know you're the source) or they will block the item too.
  5. @Peggy. I think kylie might be refering to the test at http://www.pingtest.net/ when stating a grade A connection and perfect bandwidth. A grade 'A' is the term they use to tell that the test returned no packetloss, No or very low pingtimes and practically no jitter for the internet connection. @Kylie. I'm interested to know what happens when you try to log in. Do you get an error message? Does the viewer crash? How far in the login process do you get? Use edit in the Options menu in the top right corner of your post to add information. Please also press permalink and add a comment to ensure a notification is sent to those who answered.
  6. One thing I could imagine turned items gray or white is if you are using local textures when creating clothes. These are not 'real' - as in not uploaded to the servers - and will dissapear on the next login. Does this sound likely? Use edit in the Options menu in the top right corner of your post to add information.
  7. Since it's not something you're wearing, it must be something rezzed somewhere. I take it, from what you say, the spam pops up no matter where you are? And also that others can see it? If others see it when you are near them but not otherwise, I agree with Val - it still sounds like something you have attached. Don't know how that would be possible since you have changed outfits and everyting. In local chat, where the text comes up, you should find an information button. I don't have a viewer available so I don't know, but is there some information available about the object that could help you locate it so you could remove it or report it? From the information, you should also be able to block the object and/or the person. At least you won't get this text up in chat all the time.
  8. A tree standing on a plot next to yours count towards the prim limit on your land? Is that what you're saying? If it does, it must actually be on your land, as far as I know. You should be able to right click it and return it if you have these rights on the land (and you do if you own the land). Could it be some other object that is counting on your prim allowance? In any case, you should probably set the autoreturn on the land to some other value than 0, set/deed the land to group and then ensure group member can rez. Then, any object rezzed without the correct group setting will be autoreturned after the number of minutes you set.
  9. If I'm not mistaken, only the old LL viewer will run on anything older than 10.5, and I have no idea if it is available for download anywhere anymore. But perhaps knows some better solution...
  10. /me passes Val's horse a fresh bucket of nice, clean water... I'm glad to hear the animals are safe. valerie Inshan wrote: Maddy drank all the water from his bucket thinking it was her bath. Hmmm.... Not a habit I would recommend to anybody...;P
  11. Thank you Gaia! I know you've explained this more than once. I seem to be unable to retain the information. Perhaps this time...
  12. It sounds like the breakfast was a success? The place looks great! I take it nobody tried to eat the goats or any of the other farmanimals?
  13. Kwakkelde Kwak wrote: Never tested it, but shouldn't the armature be uploaded with the mesh only when you change the joint positions? That would make sense to me at least. The mesh contains enough data to work with the SL skeleton (bone names and weights), the skeleton just contains the joint positions and hierarchy. You're absolutely right. That's what I thought, and why I said I didn't think the armature had to be selected as part of the export. But I'm not very good at explaining, so that perhaps didn't read the way I meant it? However... In the version of Blender that is in development - v. 2.64 - you have to include the armature in the export for some reason. Otherwise rigging information is not included and you can't select to include skin weights in the SL uploader. Until that version is released, you should not have to include the armature.

The mesh will scale with the changes. Well some of them, not all. If you want to make a tiny avatar, you could scale it in Blender. Yes the test I'm doing is to scale it down a lot, just messing around to see how it all works. The video I watched says to do this and apply the changes. I have scaled done this in v. 2.6x and managed to make it work. If I recall correctly, I scaled the armature down when it was in posemode. This also scales the mesh attached to it down. After importing to SL it worked fine. I don't remember if I applied scale in this case, but I suspect I did. Also, in this case I believe you have to select the armature and export with the mesh. 15. Let's see if I can give any useful information... I haven't used Blender 2.49 for a looooong time, so I might be somewhat off. It shouldn't be too different from the newer version, though. After you copy the bone weights to your own avatar model and parent it to the armature, does it work as expected? Can you pose it and move the limbs? I don't think you need to scale the model or the armature unless you want the mesh to be different than what you can manage by changing the shape sliders in the viewer. The mesh will scale with the changes. Well some of them, not all. If you want to make a tiny avatar, you could scale it in Blender. As far as I remember, you do need to click 'Make real' before exporting to a dae file. If you don't, it may be a reason you can not check to include skin weights in the SL uploader. I'm not sure if this though. Further, I don't think you have to select the armature as part of the export in 2.49. Just the head, upper and lower body of the mesh. In the export dialog, you should select to apply modifiers, export selection only and any other relevant setting. Hope this is of some help, but there is a chance I'm wrong about any and all of it...
  16. I've had that happening a few times, but to my own avatar, not to others. In my case things have returned to normal after a little while by itself. Does it stay like that or does a relog or rebake fix it? Does it go away if your friend changes skins? Does your friend se himself normal? If it's only you who see him like that, have you tried to clear your viewers cache?
  17. I don't know much about this, but it sounds to me as if your graphics card is running out of memory, and it has to start shifting stuff out to main memory or to disk. I don't know anything about your graphics card or it's specs, so I might be - probably am - WAY off. I don't think it is because of changes to the viewer or servers. If that was the case we would have heard a lot more about it, I think. The temperature I also think sounds about normal. In my own case, the temperature is frequently much higer than what you say. I don't experience such issues as you describe because of it. Sorry I can't be of more help...
  18. I agree with Kwakkelde. Sculpties are limited in lots of ways, while 'regular' mesh lets you work without those limitations. That being said, There is no way to join several sculpts into one. However, here is, or rather I think there is, a feature in the Jass product - here: http://blog.machinimatrix.org/jass/ - that lets you export several sculpts out of blender and creates a LSL script that automates the sizing and positioning of these objects in world so they look the same as in Blender.
  19. If you have checked and find your internet connection fine (use http://www.pingtest.net/ if you wish to check) and you have not made any changes to your firewall(s), I can only suggest you try to reset the modem and router to see if that helps. Unplug both for a minute or so, plug back in and see if that helps. Regarding mesh. Any of the newer viewers - LL or TPVs - can show mesh. No need to use the LL viewer if you don't want to.
  20. During import to Blender, you should se an option in the toolbar on the right to set the scale for the import. Changing this would make the imported armature more correct in size. The funky looking shape you see after import is probably the bones in the armature. You can change this - try 'stick' - in the properties panel on the left hand side (most likely blow the outliner). The setting is in the armature object data section of the panel. (which you find along the top of the panel. It looks like a little Vitruvian man) When you import the bvh animation it may have two frames in it. the first is possibly the t-pose, while the second frame might be the pose you made. Look below the 3d view for the timeline and see if your pose is on frame two.
  21. How far into the floor do you end up? Are you trying the pose you made work in Daz Studio on a new shape in world? If so, do you still end up below the ground? Or are you trying the pose with your normal shape, which I assume is edited and changed from the default? if so, I wonder if the issue could have to do with changes to body height and torso/leg length? (those are the ones I think would affect the hip position like you describe) I don't know if there is a way, beside trial and error, to figure out if you will end up below, on or above the ground when making poses and animations. I have never come across a way.
  22. You can find the uv maps here: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Clothing_Tutorials (the two first links on the page) That is probably the one you have found, and it works for both male and female.
  23. Do you get an error message? No update of drivers or anything like that? What version of the OS do you have? Which viewer do you use? (I'm assuming the latest LL viewer below) A couple of things to try. First. (re)move the ~/Library/Application Support/Secondlife/ folder. Put it on your desktop or delete it. Among other things, it contains chat and im logs that you may want to hold on to (which you can copy back to the new folder that will be created in the application support folder) If you do this and it works, you will have to set all the viewer preferences again. If you want a completely fresh installation, then also clear cache by emptying ~/Library/Caches/Second life Second. Make sure you have repaired file permissions and run the periodic maintenance scripts on your mac. Easiest way is to log in on the mac with an account that has admin rights on your system, then run what is under the automation tab in this program: Onyx. Try another viewer. Firestorm and Exodus seems to work well on the Mac. I use Exodus myself without issues. (Select edit in the options menu in the top right corner of your question to add information.
