  1. There's a reason why no one has created real life look alike avatars in SL before. Until mesh was introduced it was pretty much impossible for anyone to make an avatar look like an image in SL. Mostly because of the avatar mesh that Linden Lab uses for the avatars (it's pretty basic and because of that very limited in exactly what can be done with skins) but also because of the almost limitless possibilities for shapes. The shape of the avatar (especially the face) is as important (possibly more) than the skin, or features, of an avatar. Since mesh has been introduced it's probably possible. But then someone is going to have be very proficient at 3D modeling (like a professional modeler that does such things for a real life living). A professional is not likely to risk his/her livelihood to create a popular real life look alike for sale at, say, 10,000 $L (approximately $40 USD) due to copyright laws.......and 10,000 $L is pretty much above what anyone is going to pay for an avatar in SL. There just isn't a return for anyone (even a shady "professional") to take a chance of having a lawsuit filed against them. If someone were to approach such an individual with a custom avatar using their own face/body (no copyright issues for the creator) the time involved to create such a character is going to be huge.......they might say yes. But the cost is going to be quite high. Think of how much Sony pays professional 3D modelers for their characters........you might be in the ballpark on how it's going to cost you. That's real life money, not lindens. Now I'm sure you can find an SL skin creator who can create a skin that is similar (and probably the shape too) but it won't be a "look alike".......it will be somewhat close to what you look like in SL but not really at you at all. And it's going to cost you a bundle (in SL terms for money). Is it worth it? That's the question you have to ask yourself.
  2. I've never heard of youinsl before so I did a Goggle search. There's quite a few search hits but the only site I could find that I thought might give a clue about how safe using such a site would be is this: http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/youinsl.com The disturbing part is that the "who-is" shows youinsl as being around since 2008 yet there are no ratings. Maybe that's because the ratings site I found is not well known or maybe it's because no one is confident enough in youinsl to even try it. So to your question about how safe the site might be is "use at your own risk" Since payment is going be by use of your personal finances (credit card, debit card, check, or possibly PayPal) the likelihood of having to provide personal financial information is great (not to mention other personal information) is very high. Having an avatar in SL that looks like you sounds fun (if you are into that)..........but is it worth the risk? Not to me it isn't.
  3. System specifications are important. Without them very little anyone can do but guess...which in normally quite useless for any resolution. An easy way to get the specs that people need is to launch your viewer (either one) but don't bother to log in since you'll probably not be able to stay on long anyway. Under the "Help" menu click on "About Second Life". You'll see your basic system specs (nothing person though). Copy those and paste back here. Don't start a new thread (this blog software mimicking forum software makes impossible to post in a thread you started.....use the "Options" in the upper right corner of you post and "Edit" to add the specs and any comments you might want to add to your post. On your problem I see 2 possible issues. One not good and one sort of common. The sort of common is that your router needs rebooting to dump the memory that might not be released and builds up in the routers memory. Do that by unplugging it from it's electrical source for 3 to 5 minutes, then plug back in. Once the lights settle to the normal blinking routine restart your computer and try SL again. Hopefully that fixes it for you. The other (the not good one) is that you might be having heat problems. Most likely on your video card. That's not a good thing but you should investigate it anyway....get some hardware monitoring software and watch your GPU heat (and your CPU too but SL doesn't put too much of a strain on the newer CPU's). If your temps get near 90 Celsius it might be time to shut SL down (most video cards and CPU's have an upper heat threshold of 105 C.....at or near that temp damage can occur). I don't know how easy it is to take the side off a Mac (I'm a PC person) but if you can then get a can of compressed air and blow the dust out. Be careful, naturally, but get it all out......fans, power supply, video card, CPU, audio card, system memory modules, etc. If you are using a laptop or Macs can't be opened easily, then take it a reputable repair shop and have them clean it for you. Those are my guesses with what you gave me in the way of system information. Specs will help someone with a little better answer for you (hopefully a Mac user instead of people like me on a PC)
  4. I just did an in-world search for Imgoing Sideways........yep, there is one. However the avatar is a male avatar and Imnotgoing is female. But we all know how accurate that is. I don't know if Imgoing and Imnotgoing are the same but I did see a few post from both back in the old forums and I thought they were one in the same at that time.......still do, sort of. Both have the same sense of humor (but that was years ago when I last saw anything from Imgoing ) which also led me to my conclusion.
  5. We were so poor my brothers had to share a Lamborgini.......and I had to settle for a Viper. :smileysad:
  6. Go to your dashboard and under "Account" check "Transaction History". That will tell you if you paid your alts and the amount, when, what sim you were on at the time you paid and tell you your remaining balance in your account. If the transaction history tells you that you did pay your alts then that's what happened and the balance seen on in-world is not updated yet. It will update on it's own but to hurry it along you can click on the L$ sign next to the balance to force an update. If nothing is shown on your history to indicate that you paid your alt, contact billing support. https://support.secondlife.com/billing-support/
  7. Paperdoll runs back to early 2006 but my first account was Prudhomme which runs back to late 2005 (that account has been abandoned long ago since I can't, for the life of me, remember the password and, evidently, I missed typed someone in my security question because that didn't work when I did the "forgot password" thing a few years ago (oh well). I know several Sieferts who were around about the same as Prudhomme but I never met anyone with that sir name. I did meet one Paperdoll one time as some club (probably when I doing my dancing) and it was a guy avatar but that's the only time I remember. One of the strangest names for me was Paperclip. I took notice of that name since it was so close to mine and I actually met a bunch of Paperclips (I believe it came out after my sir name was retired but pretty close to the same time). My best friend in SL has the name Goff and I know she joined a few days before me. The oldest name that I know of who is still active is SuezanneC Baskerville. I know she is from the 2003 era (which make her one of the first settlers). She posts occasionally here in the forums but back in 2006 she was very active in the forums and what a delight most of her posts were. Pretty smart lady.
  8. The act of complaining can accomplish a lot. But it depends on what the complaint is and who you are complaining to. If, for instance, your hot water heater sprung a leak and you complain to your landlord that complaint can accomplish quite a bit....and probably won't even irritate your landlord at all. But if that same hot water heater sprung a leak and you call up your neighbor and complain it's not going to accomplish anything.......and it just might irritate your neighbor (that's assuming your neighbor isn't also your landlord ). Another type of complaining that is likely not to accomplish much except maybe give you some sense of relief.........like complaining about things that are not within anyone's control. I know someone who I love dearly but she has this very irritating habit of complaining about the heat in the summer. Where we live, it gets hot in the summer. It's uncomfortable and after a week or so of 90 plus degree heat it gets down right irritating..........but what you going to do about it? Stay out of it as much as possible, take cool showers, turn on fans, close drapes on the sunny side of the house, open them on the shady side, don't bake cookies in the middle of the afternoon........and, mostly try to ignore it. Complaining to me constantly only irritates me (which is easier when I'm uncomfortable). It doesn't make it any cooler for her. But I love her anyway.
  9. ------------------------- If LL cannot acquire these skill sets and utilize them to their fullest when actual competition does manifest, I don't see them being able to improve enough to retain their userbase. ------------------------- I can't argue much against your point about long range management skill sets. I do happen to think that that skill exists. But I also think it's very much under utilized (probably because of the lack of urgency.......they are, after all, the only dog in the yard at the moment). There's also a very real problem of cost. To really fix SL in a meaningful, more complete way they are going to have to do some major redesigning (possibly completely replacing the platform). That's a lot of money. I'm very sure LL has the experience and skill to accomplish such a task but without an urgent need patching what they have is tremendously less expensive. Any competition that jumps into the game is going to have gain the 10 years of experience that LL already has..........that means LL can do it cheaper and much more quickly than anyone else. Any competitor is going to have obtain financing (a lot of it) and investors are going to look at the competitor's experience, then at LL's experience and have to weigh the benefits of going with a lessor experienced company or an experienced company.........LL will have an easier time getting investments. However, I'm banking on the fact that LL still has the fire it had 10 years ago when Philip Linden put his crazy idea into motion. If they don't then LL will crumble. And when LL crumbles SL goes away.........even if someone buys SL it's gone and the competitor will take it's place.
  10. Of course........I'm very humble (and I don't brag).
  11. In the official SL viewer (Viewer 3) the equivalent tab to see what you are wearing is under "Appearance" The button that looks like a little t-shirt. Click on the "Wearing" tab.
  12. Peggy Paperdoll wrote: So my $L5,798,992 linden balance doesn't impress you? What a pity..............LOL It impresses me. I'm happy if I "sell" a 50L meeroo nest. LOL --------------------------------------------- I hope everyone knows I was joking. I don't brag It is much much more :smileylol:
  13. I'm sure you didn't come here for drama. I didn't respond (the first time) looking for drama either......I actually was trying to throw out some possible causes (using both my knowledge and experience). I did not expect you to fall all over yourself thanking me, nor did I have a lot of confidence that my suggestions would fix your problem (it's an odd problem that I've never encountered nor had I heard of it before). I only knew (with a lot of certainty) that the problem was not SL related and the most probable cause is somewhere in your hardware. That's where I focused. You did thank me but after you blew me off with your response by telling me it's definitely not on your end (which means you believed the problem was on LL's end.......which, as it turns out, was not true). Had you not blown my suggestions off and stated that you had tried what I suggested without the "definitely" something to do with SL part (in other words, not blown me off) I would have tried to come up with something else to help. I didn't (for the reasons I just stated). I was fully aware that you wanted help and was curious about what actually was the cause. I wasn't even upset that you blew me off........I just wasn't eager to suggest anything else and get blown off again. Then I read your response to Orca..........okay, you're on your own now. I wasn't going to help after that when before I read that I was completely open to offering something else (knowing you might or might not blow me off again...........I just wasn't eager. One thing you have to remember when you ask for help here. We try to help because we actually want to help. We don't get paid a single cent, we don't get recognition beyond some title that is automatically "increased" by number or posts, LL never comes here and tells us "nice work guys". We do it for you..........that's it. Nothing more. You don't like the answers you get then fine. No one is going to twist your arm or shout at you (unless you tell one of us to "shut up"). You're the one with the problem......not the person trying to help. How many times did you tell the LL support person to "shut up"? How many times did you tell the support person that the problem is not on your end but on theirs.......definitely? It was on your end..........that router is on your end. I missed it........but I'm not there and have no way to know that a router even existed on your end. The drama started when you told Orca to shut up. Good luck with future requests for help. Be nice next time (even when you don't like what someone says) and you'll get as much help as the people in the forums can give......even from me.
  14. Your badges are sort of similar and you posting styles are similar. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
  15. That is the product of what SL is. User created content and real time ever changing 3D graphics is part of what makes SL unique......and, at least, a very large part of the attraction. It's an issue that LL is slowly gaining on........competition will speed the fix up considerably. I'm sure the problem can be fixed......when someone figures it out, be it LL or some competitor, the technology will really take off.
  16. Darn it Ford, Chevy......what's the different? LOL Sorry about that.
  17. Does "vip" equal a Second Life Premium Membership? If so then Dres's answer is the correct one. If not (and "vip" means something else), then ask whoever you bought this "vip" from.
  18. I'm not going to say Orca couldn't have stated her comment a little better. But I will say her comment did not come across as an "attitude". Curt or blunt.........yes. Attitude or snotty.....no. Worthy of a "wtf, shut up"? Not at all.....the shut up part was definitely way out of line. I almost gave the same advice about needing a better computer after your (curt and somewhat blunt) response to my first post: ----------------------- I just reinstalled the most current drivers and it did not help. It is difinatly a second life only problem. It is not my wires or card, i do online sim-racing and a few combat games and music and many other applications on my pc all the time that uses sound and this problem is only in sl. Not only in sl but every viewer I try with the exception of a beta of a third party viewer. I have been using the old beta because it was the only one that worked without flaw for me but with all the mesh out there these days that viewer will not view it so I am not trying to work through my issues with the newest viewer. Thanks for the help. ---------------------- It is not definitely (note the spelling) a problem originating in SL (even if the problem only shows up in SL). It's also very unlikely to a problem originating in any viewer (regardless if it works on an older, 1.23 code based, viewer.....in fact that actually points directly at something on your end). You may build computers but it does not appear you understand much about the specifications of the hardware components that make up the computers you build. That's like building a home entertainment system........most anyone can plug in the components and have an entertainment system up and running. It's when problems crop up that all that plugging in that you did becomes not quite enough. The problem is on your end. Linden Lab cannot fix the problem when it's on your end because they don't have access to your end and nothing they "fix" on the SL end is going to fix a thing on your end. And, Dres, is right (but not necessarily as he stated it) LL does not have the resources to help you with a problem on your end......try to get Hewlett Packard out with a problem that has all the markings of not a problem that they are responsible for (they'll come but you'll pay for it........in most cases a pretty hefty sum of real money). They won't even "walk" you through troubleshooting beyond very general hints and tips (which they gave you in the form of a user,s manual). You may not need a new computer but something in the computer is causing your problem. That much I can almost guarantee. You're retort to me after my first post told me that you don't want to explore fixing your problem.........you want someone else to do it for you. Well, I'm not going to even try.......not after your "wtf, shut up" response to Orca. Fix it yourself. I tried to help and Orca made a suggestion..........you rejected both out of hand. Try the Firestorm people......keep the attitude down though or you'll wind up in the same boat you are here.
  19. I got to go with Penny Patton's assessment. And I'll go a bit further. I do think Second Life will be around 10 years from now (maybe twice that long). Right now LL has no serious competition which, naturally, makes SL the strongest contender for the virtual world hunger that is out there wanting attention. But I'm also going to say that someone will finally come up with a virtual world that puts pressure on LL to compete.......compete aggressively for that audience. 10 years ago SL appealed to a very small niche group and it's taken these last 10 years to slowly (very slowly) gain greater interest. For 10 years (and still today) the vast majority of people giving SL a try were gamers (or people interested in games). It's the perception the general population has of virtual worlds. Those who came to SL with the idea it was a game were disappointed and most left after just a few hours. The retention rate was (and still is) very small. Only the niche group remained and that niche is a very small percentage of the population who might be interested in an SL type of virtual world. LL tried many different ways to change that perception of what a virtual should be (should be according to Philip Linden....not what it should be according to the generally accepted definition of a virtual world). The online games created that perception years ago and once something is perceived one way it's a very difficult task to change it. It's taken 10 years for LL to start changing what people think SL is......but not by much. At least some people are coming to SL without expecting a predetermined notion that it's a game. Generally once perceptions start to change others start developing on the idea to compete (that's why so many potential competitors have tried and failed). There will be a competitor in a few years (maybe next week, who knows) that will put pressure on SL and that will grow it's base much more rapidly........which puts SL squarely in the eyes of the general population. But SL is still going to have the advantage of being the "standard" of virtual worlds (whether or not they deserve that stature is irrelevant.......Microsoft is and will continue to be for a very long time the standard of home computers). SL will gain a robust portion of the virtual world population and, therefore, very profitable. Then after some time at the top of the heap, historically they'll start to fade and someone else will come along and take the top slot. However, by the time SL even gets into serious competition (and we all get the benefit of competition) it's going to change........and probably change a lot. It won't be redesigned (as it eventually needs to be) until LL has to spend that time and effort but to keep the competition at bay for as long as they can, they will change. Most of us old timers are going to resist that change and many will leave but the new users will replace us in numbers greater than the decline. I think that will start the day someone else jumps in with a serious virtual world that improves on SL as it is at the moment. It's going be rough for both the users and LL. I know many think LL (as a company) are short sighted and, even, stupid but I've been hearing those same statements since the day I joined (and that was from some of the original members who joined SL on day one). LL is still here and vastly different in so many ways. When I first joined you couldn't even TP to many places. Flying was an adventure since crossing sim boundaries almost always sent to off-world or to 10.10.10 and the only solution was to re-log. Walking across boundaries wasn't much better. Those problems are almost non-existant now. We didn't have flexible prims, no sculpties (and mesh was something only the professional 3D modelers knew about). It's going to fun........if I survive the changes. It'll be here though.
  20. Then that is the time to complain.......that would be a legitimate complaint. I have no dog in that fight and you would not see me post in any thread concerning that if that does, in fact, ever come to happen on Marketplace (well, I might jump in but I would not be in defense of LL nor would I excuse LL should that happen......and, yeah I might even get a little negative since I do get "passionate" in such matters). However, I really don't think LL will go that route...........mostly because the merchants will never pay what it would cost them for such advertising (30 lindens was too much for them in search years ago and that's about 15 cents USD). You have to remember LL says a lot of things.....it's like they think out loud. Sometimes way too much too. Okay, so I'm going to apologize for coming off like I did to you. I wasn't PO'd at you but at a couple others (the ones who called me a pimp and a whore). I am open minded enough to know a couple bad apples are not an indication of the crop. It's not that I don't respect merchants.............I do. But only merchants who act like merchants and not whiny brats playing at being a merchant. And those "creators" who never fail to remind me that they are the "backbone" of SL drive me insane........that is a total crock of you know what. The creators who create because they love to create whatever it is they create are the backbone..........those with the sign on their forehead "I'm a creator. Love me" are the one that put a sour taste in my mouth. Sorry I lumped you into those two groups and went off on you.
  21. You can make your own sign quite easily. And basic paint program can do that............Microsoft Paint, for instance. Save in PNG, BMP or JPG format (I excluded TGA since Microsoft Paint does not support that format).
  22. By using the same payment method you use anywhere else to buy $L.
  23. An ad to check your criminal record popping up a page that contains a creation that you are selling is SL is going to hurt your sales or cheapen your product? That's what I heard from the very start of this thread and that's what I'm continuing to hear. That's a crock and you know it. First off just because you see that ad does not mean a single one of your customers or potential customers see that ad (they likely see something else entirely depending oh how Google has them targeted). And second, people savy enough to even be on SL are smart enough to know a pop-up ad like that has nothing (absolutely nothing at all) to do with you or Second Life (or even Linden Lab). You know that but you insist that LL take it away because you don't like it and it's your excuse to whine and scream about. The ads are there and they are probably not going away anytime soon. It's not going to effect your sales or your reputation in the least. Get over it and create instead of trying to run LL's business..........you have enough to do with your own business. I got negative last night (after several days of remaining quite pleasant in any post I made) when someone like you (not you, but someone like you) called me a pimp, then a few hours later someone called me a whore...........all because I'm taking a realistic view of LL's decision to put targeted ads on Marketplace. I guess you came late to the thread.
