  1. It's really simple. 1. Have a lot of friends. 2. Make new friends with the vistors Do whatever you can to make then stay. Lets just say that's it's quite easy to make people stay if you know what to do. Just be active. That's pretty much how places like the commune got started. Everytime I came there, there was always somebody ther eto greet me. If you do not have a lot of time in SL, then it's not really worth it. Maintaining a popular place is a hard thing to do.
  2. Unofically, maybe. Windows is primarily Direct X, yet people got this crappy unoptimized program working for windows. Offically? Nope. Software is expected to *WORK* on consoles, and a program as glitchy and as crappy as SL would never be accepted by Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo. LL barely have any programming skills to program well on the PC without crashing or problems ingame.

TKR No offense, but mfor once can you actually post something that has something to do with the topic? I know it's hard for you to find work after they got rid whole helper thing, but I'm pretty sure this person knows how to meet people.
  4. Didn't you say in anothe topic that "My firestorm never crashes" I guess it does now.
  5. None are better than SL; that depends on your hardware or viewer. But overall? I like both my Linux setup and my Mac OS setup, so I like both I guess. I can't really stand WIndows though. Besides video games (which doesn't matter to me since I'm not a PC gamer), you can pretty much find any software you need on Linux or Mac. But my opinion is bias since I'm a software developer and graphic artist. If you're casual, just get a cheap PC with windows 7. But if you want to be a dumb hipster like me, then get a Mac.
  6. KEVP314 wrote: Wow. Do they no longer want this to be succesful? Even when they had a tutorial, some people gave up because of how hard it was to learn the interface. It just becomes a place where a handful of us with "secret knowledge" can come and play. KEVP I'll never understand this why people think this way. Just look at the wiki. That's everbody does these days when they need help on any software.
  7. Syo Emerald wrote: SL is not RL. You can't compare it for various reasons. One is that there aren't any groups or profiles naturally integrated in the real world, so there isn't even the option to poke a person and see what he/she likes. Your example would mean, that you leave your profile completely blank, because hey, in RL I can't right-click you.... Well, nothing wrong with someone leaving their profile blank if they don't want people learning anything about them. My profile is completely blank for that very reason.
  8. It's certainly ain't father's day for me. Another week in my country.
  9. The last thing i want to do is scare somebody after they seen my groups. I visit a lot of sims: Grated, M rated, RPing, hangout spots. Since everybody look at profiles first I'm just doing it for their own safety.
  10. I agree that bad lines suck on the mainlands. Makes me wonder why they don't get a private estate instead. However, I rather deal with them than the teleport you to home at 10 seconds secruity orbs.

I just finished my degree in computer science and I took some IT courses during college not too long ago, and i personally say buying a laptop for SL is fine if you know how to take care of your laptop so it doesn't overheat. While I perfer my desktop, I've been running SL on laptop for years without much trouble since I was always on the move during school. Of course due to SL horrible optimization you can't run at the highest settings on many laptops, but lets be honest; SL isn't exactly that pretty graphically anyway. Running at the higest settings is like trying to put makeup on a baboon.
  12. Dresden Ceriano wrote: Does the sexualized culture of SL objectify men? Does it encourage men to objectify themselves? I not completely sure, but judging by your forum posts, I can come to the conclusions that men of your "type" seem to objectify themselves a lot.
  13. Orca Flotta wrote: Instead of speculating about future developments let's focus on the Here and Now for a moment: Here and Now you need a powerful machine and a big screen to really get the best out of SL. Here and Now impatient kids are crying for SL to be able to run on their tablets and not-so-smart phones. In the Here and Now I haven't heard of too many (if any) success stories about bringing these two very contradictionary demands technologically together. That's only because SL is horribly unoptimized due to LL crappy coding. You think something that looks like second life (which you have to admit, doesn't look that great by todays graphical standards) wouldn't need at least a Radeon HD 7950 to run smoothy on ultra settings. Tablets and smartphones are already running decent looking games, and they're getting stronger every year. I obvoiusly don't expect to see SL on any mobile devices anytime soon when we even have SL running like crap on decent rigs. But for everything else out there, I expect PCs will get less popular overtime. I know even popular gaming companies like Square Enix starting to say that tablets are the future.
  14. In before "Build it yourself" In before "You can build a computer cheaper than that" In before "I7, Nvidia 600 series, etc. " Same thing in every computer topic
  15. V3 mostly. My Ubuntu(Linux) doesn't seem to like Firestorm or Phoenix for whatever reason, so V3 works well for me.
  16. Easist way to find land is to be friend with someone who owns land.
  17. steeljane42 wrote: ORLY, that is a high end PC config? Sorry, didn't know it. /sarcasm 1. That is NOT high end PC. It's a starting level for a good PC which will run everything including SL fine for a few years (it's better to buy one decent PC once 3 or so years, than buy bad PC and change it's part every year ). 2. I dare you to post how many FPS do you get with your 100$ or 4 year old card on Ultra settings + tweaks ( you said MAX and it is MAX ) using at least 1920x1080 resolution in crowded sim. Actually don't bother, because i know for sure that even 2 gens old top GPU 480GTX is not enough for that ( have it in my 3rd PC ). 3. SL does looks like day and night between high/ultra and medium/low settings. 4. The post I replied to had a few options, including budget below 2000$. 5. SL is terrible optimisation wise. It reminds me of console emulators. If you're familiar with those you should understand. You need at least 500$ PC to emulate (to play with decent FPS) 13 years old PS2 which has 299mhz CPU and 32MB of RAM with 148mhz GPU. Same for SL, modern games such as BF3 or Skyrim may run decent on "meh" config, but SL won't. In fact, I have more GPU usage in SL than I have in Skyrim without graphics mods. I'm running SL on ultra setting + Shadows with a HD 6850, and that's equivilent to the 460 gtx which is discontinued. I'm getting 30-60 fps on my machine at 1920 x 1200 resolution, so....perhaps there is something wrong with your machine? Crowded sims aren't so bad, but I usually experience more lag than large FPS hits. I know SL isn't that well optimized since it runs on OpenGL, but I don't find the game that demanding.

  19. Caligirl, I'm sorry that some of the people here seem a bit rude to you; some of the forum regulars can be snarky dicks at times But even then, you're not the first (and certainly not the last person) to have these types of surveys on the message board.
  20. Doesn't SL require a rating on steam? This game is basically M rated, even in some moderated rated sims.
  21. Usually any online services that has sometime type of trading+barter system(like Steam trading, MMOs, Ebay, etc), you can get penalized or banned for scamming people. Yet in SL, it just a "residential dispute." I don't understand why LL allows people to get away with this behavior. I mean, surely that have access to chatlog in the system that allows them to who's scamming a person?
  22. You came to the wrong board to post this information man, since this place is filled with liberal athesis and gay people. A religious discussion without flaming here? THat's kind of impossible. It would be best to end this discussion.
  23. Kenbro Utu wrote: You still fail to understand. There is no comparison to an environment that is simply delivered by your hard drive, and one that has to be dynamically downloaded at the moment, complete with any changes that happen in real time, and avatars whose images are not stored on your computer. In an MMO the only information being passed is bascially location and actions, very minimal data compared to the amount needed for the graphics. It is the difference, no matter what you feel. Then you probably haven't played that many MMOs. There are plenty of 'sandbox' MMOs out there that allow custom content and moving things around, and they move a heck of a lot faster than SL. And I'm not talking about something as simple as minecraft either. Phil Deakins wrote: Consequently this thread is a waste of time since it's premise is wrong. Then why reply?
  24. Caitlin Tobias wrote: So yeah, there are people who miss out on all that awesomeness because of various reasons. But that does not mean others cant enjoy it as well? Technology moves on, as also mentioned: updating your hardware every couple of years is really not uncommon. If you can't, I am sorry for you, but dont bash SL or LL for that. But think about this for a second from a business standpoint. Does the average computer consumer upgrade their computer every 2 years? I really don't think so. And most people don't even know how to upgrade their computer. The people who usually upgrade their computers are only the one's that are only into intensive graphical applications (video games). Just like the TC, the average computer comsumer suffers for this reason, and is one of the main reasons why SL can barely obtain new users these days (Rick Rodvik Linden pointed out that the majority of the new users can't stay). And to the topic creater, I wouldn't call mesh a fad, but I think it's overrated at the moment. Other than maybe mesh boots, I found other mesh clothing underwhelming. And as for other objects, mesh items don't look that better than sculpties at all, not to mention Mesh uses more prims from what I noticed. However, you'll have to give it some time; I think Mesh will be far better in the future.
