Firstly, I don't see anywhere near this much RAM usage with the current LL viewer. Mine starts out around 0.65 and slowly creeps up to about 1.8 in a couple hours. That said, the best way to prevent swapping to HDD is sufficient RAM. This can be a problem for older computers running Win XP or most any 32-bit OS. I'm running Win 8.1 with 8GB RAM.

PeterGray @ LL Responds to UCCSL RE: LL TOS Concerns
Cincia Singh replied to Toysoldier Thor's topic in Merchants
It seems the most profitable concession would be selling tinfoil hats to SL creators/merchants who spend way more time anguishing about their intellectual property rights than producing intellectual property. -

Updated LL TOS Claims FULL RIGHTS to ALL CONTENT

The Feted Inner Core (also known as the Fetid Inner Core) is a conspiracy theory that exists among certain residents of Second Life. It is an argument that certain groups of players use their relationship with the staff of Linden Lab to obtain favors that advantage their in-game businesses at the disadvantage of others. -
Too many live music venues lagging....
Cincia Singh replied to Mankind Tracer's topic in Second Life Server
It's worth noting than most, but not all, lag is client side. It's been ages since a region crashed from under me, but staring at 40+ avatars all wearing flexi and HUDs is bound to cause viewer lag except on the most high end computers. It gets worse for people who set their draw distance and/or bandwidth high. There are certain realities in SL and denying them reduces the fun for everyone. -

In other late breaking news, sometimes ping times and download speeds on the internet suck. We'll have graphs, plots and traces on the 11pm news show! :matte-motes-tongue:

I think the only way to sort it out is for anyone who is affected to contact above.net and raise the issue with them. -
You misunderstand how Second Life works and make the common mistake of comparing SL to games that are loaded onto your hard drive. Everything you see in SL has to be streamed to your computer and rendered by your cpu and video card second to second. The only thing on your hard drive from SL is the viewer which is the conduit from LL to your PC (and some texture cache). Most other games (for instance World of Warcraft) are loaded on your hard drive and your computer has access to everything it needs constantly with very little additional data streamed to your PC (mostly position information for the people you play with). So 30 fps for a quad core computer with 4GB RAM (sounds like a laptop) is actually fairly good performance. In fact your video card is likely your most limiting factor after your RAM, but you didn't give it's specs. 4GB of RAM is not a lot.

omg don't say that, someone at The Lab might see/hear you and decide to prove you wrong lol

Everything is flashing weird colors and nothing loads
Cincia Singh replied to Chocominty's topic in Second Life Viewer
Laptops come in many configurations from totally useless for SL to top of the line. Please post your specs and people will try to help. Without your computer specs there's little help available. -
While I agree that group chat in SL is often difficult, you are camparing apples to oranges when you compare the old chat rooms (IRC and etc) to SL group chat; they are not similar and SL group chat is much more complicated. Of course if you have a technical solution to chat lag please submit it and help everyone.
