  1. Funny, I have landmarks I made several years ago that actually still work.

Then again, the places they go to don't go changing their decor or pulling up and moving elsewhere on a whim either.

Landmarks for a Private Island will update the actual grid positions/names if either actually changes so the Landmark can take you there.

They may be useless to you but they're sure as heck not useless to everyone.

Your suggested system would be lovely if offered as an alternative - not as a replacement.

I suppose Tari answered that well and truly. ;)

I can't remember the details but there was actually a time when the name of one of LL's development projects was flagged on MP.

    Oy .... Yeah, that's a busted algorithm ....

    Clear your viewer cache

Viewer cache has zip to do with the problem.

As a few other users already noted/stated: It's a part of a System level asset, in particular the System level Hair - these days treated as a "base" for other things.

You cannot remove it, only replace it with a different asset.

Clearing cache without first having tried to swap to a different System Hair is pointless.

Not always. I've reported a couple of strange word filter behaviour to them and it's not at all unusual for them to be just as surprised as we are.

That almost sounds like they used a learning algorithm so they wouldn't have to manually add in new entries.

That or the ones that set up the lists don't work at the Lab anymore - either case would have the same result.

  5. There is a reason why the first bit of advice to users on WiFi is don't use WiFi.

Despite what others may try and claim, WiFi is not a truly viable solution outside of mobile devices. Doubly so if you've got several high bandwidth devices connected to the same antenna.

If you insist on using WiFi, make certain you're connected to the 5G antenna (if you have one) and that you have as few other devices as possible connected at the same time. Phones and tablets won't be too much of a drain as long as they aren't constantly shuttling traffic.

Do note that all of this only applies if your "crashes" pop up a message complaining that you've lost connection to the sim. Almost any other error is something else.

  6. The point - of course - is that there is some server load and the added LI cost is not just a "money grab" ...

There is also load on the computer running the client.

Why yes, lets allow every user to treat Animesh objects exactly the same way as they do all other objects - such a wonderful idea! Then users would complain even more about the lag, blaming everything but themselves ....

Fun fact: Basic members can have one Animesh object attached to their avatar at a time. Premium members can have *gasp!* two! Cue the users screaming that "it's so unfair!"

  7. Linden Lab decided to make the increased group limit a Premium Perk in an effort to entice more users to go Premium.

Don't like the Linden Homes? Don't get one - put that tier to use as part of a Mainland parcel.

Don't like the idea of buying Mainland? Don't - that's your choice.

You say you rent a parcel? Private Island or Mainland? If the former, Linden Lab may not see that money at all. If the latter, get a Premium Account and cut out the middle.

Further i do not know where you're shopping but I can certainly say this: I have only ever run into a single shop group that has asked me for a fee to join.

Oh and even with the Group limit of 60 for Premium? I'm rather particular about what groups I join. There is no need to join all that many shop groups.

  8. No one - no really, no one - can give you a wholly accurate answer since no one actually knows what criteria affect search ranking.

The Lindens aren't going to outright tell you how their search algorithm functions - that would create an unfair advantage.

Traffic rating and Visitor count have not been major factors for ranking in the web based search for many years now. You'll have to experiment to see which techniques work for your sim.

01..Unreadable Fancy Fonts for Display names that are VERY different from the avatar's system name.

02..People who get angry when you call them by their system name, because their display name is unreadable.

03..People who include "Master" in their Display Name.

04..People who work in SL under one name, have a different Display Name and yet an even DIFFERENT System Name. Confuse much?

While I do agree with most of this, the fourth entry is one that I can somewhat understand ... It's been my experience that it is far more common with those who RP as more than one character - be it on the same sim or on several sims. Display Names have a seven day timer that is triggered each time you change your name - completely useless if you're not spending an entire week in one place, as one character.

It can also simply be that their Display Name is set to a character's name for when they are Role Playing and that they do so often enough to feel that there is no need whatsoever to change it.

Not all that confusing to be honest ... but it does take a certain mindset to untangle it.

  10. Necro or not ....

There is no reason to set anyone as an Owner - at all. If you must then sure - make a few alternate accounts to fill the role.

Make your group, create a specialized role for those who might need most of the control options being an Owner affords and title the role Administrator.

    Done.

And this is where the game engine gets confused.

Wear: Wears item on your avatar REPLACING mesh and any other random spots on that attachment point.

Add : Adds the mesh to count towards your 38 attachment slot limit.

In addition most game designers do not have the item SET to the specific slot for pants. Therefore, this creates many issues with WEAR when putting on a pair of pants will detach Shirts, shoes, hair or anything on that SPECIFIC attachment point.

And your point is... What exactly?

It functions as intended - as has been explained to you already. The only issue is in labeling.

Second Life was - from the beginning - intentionally designed using a mindset that differs from MMOs and the like. Don't like it? Tough.

Second Life may be classified as a game in places and may - by simple technicality - be able to be defined as such but make no mistake, it was not designed to be such.

Deal with it and learn the nomenclature.

I thought he wanted to be able to allow visitors besides just his family members and didn't want to have to set the estate to a group if not necessary to secure the privacy of the homes. In that case the situation would use an orb plus ban lines for the private homes. If he only ever wants his immediate family to have access then I agree.

The specific use case was stated a bit ago and from phrasing precludes visitors.

The orb isn't overkill if someone really wants to get into your parcel to spy on you. I personally use this method to keep out a stalker who has followed me around for 8 years. The orb is only necessary to keep someone from flying over the ban lines to get into the parcel to cam the person/people inside the parcel.

    1. Estate level access set to a specific group.
    2. Area user wants further restricted made its own parcel.
    3. Parcel user wants further restricted - in this case a very specific set of avatars - then add said specific avatars to the parcel ban list.
    4. Set now further restricted parcel so that only those actually on parcel can see/interact with users on said parcel.

No need for an orb. Their use case was revealed/outlined in an earlier post (wanting to restrict sim access to a group and further wanting to restrict specific members of said group from having parcel access/being able to see what is going on at a specific location in said sim) and the above covers what they were asking about.

The orb would only act as a restriction methods for those not explicitly banned from the segregated parcel - in short it would only activate for everyone else, not the "children".

I have a similar enough setup for my Den parcel in Second Life, the differences being it's a stratified parcel (various areas at different altitudes) with an Access List (not a Ban List), Group Only occasionally set (if need be) and specific areas further restricted by use of an orb.

The difference with Toolinator's stated use case is that I do not have an entire sim, only a small section.

The steps above are essentially a modification of my own setup, taking the added controls/abilities/permissions into account.

Thank you for answering the question completely. Yes I have control over the island from shore to shore and only want to stop my adult children from "camera viewing" into our house. They have there own house on the island that they can do what they want with.

Congrats on affording an entire sim.

Want to stop them from camming in? You'll have to explicitly ban them from your parcel on said island.

Much of this thread would not presently exist if you'd stated some of this much earlier.

    To recap for you:

    • Yes, you can prevent the general userbase from accessing the sim by setting the entire estate - at estate level - to a group.
    • Once this is done you then need to set a separate parcel for your own home on the sim.
    • Got that individual parcel made? Good. Set it so only those on the parcel can see/interact with others on it.
    • Once you have that done, add your "children" to that parcel's ban list.

The above steps will keep the general userbase off of your sim and prevent your "children" from being able to see what you are up to. What it will not do is keep them from moving their camera into the structure and seeing any furniture/posters/etc that are present. It will only prevent them from seeing or otherwise interacting with others on that parcel and will prevent their "physical" access.
