  1. Possible.

There are complications. What people can do and how they use A.I. and for what purpose is still being worked out.

Using a living actor's voice... there is a problem.

And what did Aristotle actually sound like? Did he speak the way he wrote? And who owns the simulation? How are the computers generating the answer paid for?

But we do have A.I. in SL now. Out dancing at Ministry of Trance I saw they had an A.I. DJ and sound track. Stone Johnson (musichero) is creating interactive sex... dolls.... workers... using A.I. And others are exploring use of A.I. in SL.

Did you mean the Tilia dollar?  The L$ is not regulated at all, but exchanging them for Tilia US$ puts them in a regulated status.

My Tilia account says US$ Tilia Account Summary, and is regulated like a US bank.  LL could take all my $L and burn them and I could do nothing about it, they are unregulated tokens.

No I actually mean the L$. Tilia came into being because of the regulations being imposed on L$. The Lab needed a cleaner way to handle L$ that was a better fit into the system. L$ were around long before Tilia. Government was restricting what the Lab could do with L$ and how it had to be tracked. Tilia greatly reduces the amount of tracking the Lab has to provide.

  5. Some uninformed person is always trying to get someone to control something. 🙄 The generally clueless are so annoying.

L$ is an actual currency that suffers RL government control like any other currency. The price of the Linden currency floats and depends on users willingness to buy L$. The Lab exerts a degree of control just as the US Treasury exerts control on the US$. But others have a say too. Just as every RL government and RL person has a say in RL currencies there are many virtual entities that have an influence on the L$.

As RL currencies destabilize due to the Ukraine war and Russia, China, India, and others deciding they cannot trust the US Dollar we'll see increasing US inflation. What is that going to do to the L$? Since the Lab is a US based company it will suffer as the US Dollar declines. The Lab has to pay the majority of its bills in US$.

Those of us in the US are likely to see L$ become more expensive. But it is hard to know which foreign currencies will do better and find L$ cheaper.

Gold is the only stable commodity. But until people use Goldbacks for the majority of their transactions, I doubt we will be able to talk the Lab into accepting Goldbacks.

I thought it might be my VPN, but it's the same with it turned off. And I always end up floating in the air when I login, even when everything loads properly. That's the same with all my accounts. I even cleared my caches just in case of corruption.

I just tried to login with Black Dragon. It's worse. It said I have no clothing in my inventory, and logged me out.

The Firestorm viewer had a warning notice up this morning 4/5. Seems a server update causes the floating at login. Whatever there is awareness of the problem by those that can do something.

  8. So far this is a mix of accurate tech and oblivious opinion. Figuring out which is which shouldn't be all that hard.

There are ways to get your IP Address and MAC address. The Lindens point to the hole in the wiki. Fortunately it is technically complex and incurs a cost. So, we see very little of this type of stalking. And Firestorm has the option to disable the feature for increased security built-in.

    image.png.4078e27fa2a50917aa4d80ca11473ddc.png

Plus the viewers are third-party open source. There are hacker viewers. Those can send your SL ID, computer ID, SL login details including password, IP Address, MAC, OS version, etc etc...

Fortunately even a novice level of care can keep you safe in SL. There is very little one needs to do to be safe in SL.

Hiding your secrets requires a bit more care.

I do wonder if it would help people who've suffered paralysis to have a better SL experience? So much of SL is still based on being able to use a keyboard...it would be cool if it could help people to 'think-type' or connect to an AI voice app...but I don't really know much about this technology and know some people here really don't like or trust Elon Musk...🤔

This is the idea being used to sell the concept. I believe it will be developed to help people with injuries and handicaps. But think of the cost and the limited target market for the tech. Big pharma and big medical are looking for a larger audience. I suspect we gamers will be an early target demographic.

For decades I never questioned the idea where those cybernetics would actually come from. Many of these stories were written in a time before Digital Rights Management (DRM) or Software as a Service (SaaS) were a thing. I've always wanted cybernetics. At least as a kid.

    Nowadays? HOLY EMPEROR OF NOPE.

You just know some musky manchild is gonna switch off your implant over some stupid unrelated social media feud or your cybernetic arm will just flick off because wifi crashed. I can't even imagine wanting one anymore because I've got so very little trust in software companies these days.

As kids we like the stuff that seems neat. Then we get older and build an immunity to the hype.

The idea that these links are just one-way... is likely way too simple a viewpoint. If it is two-way, then it WILL be hacked.

That it can be repo'd or turned off at someone's discretion... other than mine... is a deal breaker.

We get to experiment with lots in SL. In addition to myself I've gotten to be a male, gopher, dragon, boxbot... But in real life the same ideas are being pushed. Pick your sex. For only a few tens of thousands and agreement to purchase hormones from us  for life we'll change your physical body to match. It has been much cheaper in SL.

  12. @Yesenia Zero There are basic troubleshooting steps. One needs to determine if it is the computer, the viewer, or the avatar that has the problem. As Ivanove suspects, it may be one of your input devices. If a SpaceNavigator, joystick, or tablet (Wacom) is not set up correctly they can cause such a problem. When I leave my pen on the tablet my mouse acts weird. Occasionally a USB cable is pulling on my SpaceNavigator...

There are things the avatar may wear that can cause the problem. There are attachments to the viewer that can cause problems.

For troubleshooting many of us have two or more viewers installed. The Linden SL Viewer is sort of a must have to get any support from the Lab's support people. Firestorm and Black Dragon are popular alternate viewers. Cool VL Viewer is popular with those running older hardware. Is the problem present in a different viewer? Then it isn't the viewer.

Avatar attachments are often a problem. Try one of the avatars in the Linden starter set of avatars. Look in the library in your inventory. Replace your avatar with one of the library avatars. Did that fix the problem? If so, there is something your avatar has attached that is the problem.

When we can't find a problem we often use an alternate avatar, a different account. If the problem persists then the problem is likely on the SL side of things, a region problem most likely. Or a computer problem.

Try these different steps and if you still can't find the problem come back, explain what you have done and we can probably help.

  13. Beq is smart and understands the viewer. However techy types tend to have their interests and opinions heavily weighted for technical perfection.

I find it interesting that the word "forced" is used so often.

The ideas of freedom and tolerance are quickly forgotten. Forget personal choices and preferences. Do it my way...

The JellyDoll solution was a good solution because it allows everyone to do what they want with minimal impact on those that do not want to render high cost avatars and those that want to wear them.

  14. @Ricky40 Ayashe gave a good set of examples, above, of what can be done with Black Dragon's Poser.

I often start with a facial animation/pose HUD that gets close to what I want then tweak the expression in BD.

Not all heads are equal when if comes to using BD's Poser. With my Jennifer head by GA.ER I can't move teeth and other parts of the face as independently as I would like. But I do have good lip and eye control with this head.

I believe it would not hurt SL and performance for others if the number of attachment points was raised to 50. I think so few would use it, it would not have an effect on SL in general. We are many more using 20-30 points, and I can not imagine wearing over 38, even if the number was raised to 50.

I disagree. I think it will be a problem. Residents can misuse anything and usually do.

With 38 allowable attachments I see people with ARC >800,000 and often over 1,000,000... Depending on where you are you see more or fewer of these high ARC people. I am always surprised when I see a nearly nude pole dancer with a massive ARC.

  16. @Steve Oval In SL knowledge is freedom. SL has an infinite learning curve. But, as you will find out, you can choose to stop at any point on the curve. And there are different paths up the curve.

SL learning is very much like RL learning. It starts with what you THINK you want to do, or in RL to be. Then as you learn things change. So we go from our childhood idea of being an astronaut to something more financially secure, like a drug lord running a cartel... 🙃

However, the Linden made SL Viewer caters to the new and makes the learning curve as shallow as possible. So, you can start with the system avatars and experiment with them. One can grab one and go play in SL without learning much of anything about avatars. But people will know you are new. There are people that don't like new people, they ask SOOOO many question and know how to do so little... and there are those people that enjoy helping the new. May you only find the later.

I learned SL by a series of questions in the style of "How do I..." I would search the SL Forum, the SL blogosphere, and YouTube for answers. I did a lot of experimenting. While SL doesn't use the UNDO concept it does allow one to redo things. For me that has evolved into making my base (nude) body and using it for a starting point for all my other looks. I build a look and save it as an outfit. If I start tweaking on the outfit and mess it up, I just re-wear the outfit which restores my look and start tweaking again. So while you may not get back to your starting point by undoing things, you can just jump back to the starting point.

Don't spend all your time learning. Have fun. Ask questions as needed.

9 hours ago, Yesenia Zero said:

I have a lot of stuff so kinda hard to know what to get rid of and what not.

Inventory in the viewer takes up very little memory. I have friends with inventory sizes in the hundred thousands. Technically there is no limit to inventory size. Which makes sense when you consider the Lab gets a cut of everything sold in SL. Limiting inventory would be limiting the Lab's income.

Inventory entries are small. The item is NOT physically present in your viewer's inventory. Your inventory consists of a list of names, date info, and a UUID. I for get how many characters long an entry is, but it is something like 128 or 256 bytes. However, that still takes some time to download. So, large inventories, 100+k, will add some seconds to your start up time. Also know the inventory loading process is recursive and has some timeout limits. So a SLOW or bad internet connection to SL can make for a problem. Folders with more than 5,000 items have been known to cause timeout problems. So keep the max number of items in a folder under 5k.

The reason that 5k thing is not an over all limit, is a folder (A1) with 100 folders (B1-3k) each with 3,000 items is recursively handled as individual folders. So even though A1 has a total of 300,100 items in its tree, the system sees A1 as only having 100 items.

Windows 10 will run with only 2GB of RAMemory. To run the viewer the system needs two more GB - 4GB total. If you are this limited on memory, you WILL have problems and inventory size will make a difference. Not much. But some.

You can get the free app MemHistory and see how your system is consuming RAM and whether your viewer is choking. An 8GB RAM system is unlikely to be affected by inventory size.

It will likely be cheaper to add memory than start over.

To know what to get ride of... if you have not been organizing inventory it can be an overwhelming challenge. 14 years of uncontrolled inventory growth... There are numerous posts in the forum about how to organize inventory and what to keep and how to label it. You can read them and decide what may work for you. I have my style. I spend a little time organizing each time I build a new outfit. I trash stuff all the time. What I think is most important is putting everything new in its place. The result is I have a general idea of where everything is.

If you haven't done something like that, I suggest you get the CATZNIP Viewer, which has the best inventory engagement tools I've seen. Use it to get organized.

If you just want to reduce inventory size, which I think is generally pointless - except for emptying trash, use the inventory tools to select OLD items and trash them. Use the inventory filters to select items older than, say, 5 years. Dump all of the resulting items in the trash.

I've changed how I do inventory several times over the years. Also I have changed how I label things. One thing I like, for now, is in my categories I have year folders. So... Dresses - 2020, 2021, 2022, etc. My oldest is pre-2010. Used filters to dump old stuff in it. So far working for me.

I wonder what the stats are on the percentage of users for each of the various viewers,

When I still attended the Open Source viewer meetings, in the days of Oz Linden, we would get that information. At the time Firestorm was used by about 75% of the residents. The SL Viewer was being used by 20 something percent of residents. The less than 5% contains all the other viewers.

The Macs use a weak OpenGL driver. They consistently have more problems. NVidia does a better job on their OpenGL driver.

What's worse, is when SL things suddenly "revert", or "change". For no apparent reason. I spent an hour adjusting Cat's vanity. Then a month later, the colour's are messed up, and I know she hasn't adjusted them (she would say "ooopps"). Or terraforming, and it's suddenly back to where it was before I did anything when I log in the next day.

With stuff in the region this can happen when the region is restarted. The work around is to adjust then take it back into inventory, This forces all the settings into the database. Otherwise they may not survive the restart.

After thinking about how to set up a new avatar, spent the half day to try out new skins, built different shapes, used different heads and you think you are done. A single glimp and you teleport elsewhere and suddenly you get kicked out of SL. What drives me really nuts in SL is the fact, when you return after the crash, your work gets totally screwed and it results in the following. I mean it took me just a short time to restore her, but it bothers me a lot. 😤

    SL drives me nuts.png

When you change things on your avatar the changes do not save until you save as an outfit or successfully log off. Firestorm for some time would silently crash during log off. So often changes were not saved.

Changes to items, like a color change, often are not saved until the item is taken off... or thinking another way... sent back to inventory. So outfit saves and log offs may not always work as expected.

When I change the color on a dress or clothing item I change the original item, which I never wear except to setup an outfit. I wear the original and change it as needed. Then I take it off/detach, then make a copy and save it in an appropriately named  folder, and then wear the copy. Which is the version that gets saved as part of the Outfit I save.

  20. I never use email for photos in SL. It is easier and faster to just save the snap to my hard drive. Plus I want high rez images. Usually 3000x1700px PNG images or about 15MB which most email servers refuse to send.

You can save a shape file to your computer. It depends on your viewer. Firestorm allows saving and importing shape files as XML files. So people readable. Use Develop>Avatar>Character Tests>Appearance to XML. if you are missing the Develop menu, use Ctrl+Alt+Q to reveal it.

The import is in the panel where you create a new shape.
